Born in Romania, land of the Iele and Vlad the Impaler, AIMEE BRISSAY has spent all her life surrounded by books. She has ridden side by side with d’Artagnan and The Three Musketeers to retrieve the Queen’s diamonds, set sail on the Erasmus in search of the Japans, fell in love with Rhett Butler and roamed the Wild West along Old Shatterhand. She has walked on the footsteps of the Olympian Gods and searched for Zalmoxis’ sanctuary in the Carpathians. In her mind, she’s never been the damsel in distress but rather the knight in shiny armor fighting for a cause.

With a background like this, turning to writing was no surprise.

Aimee discovered erotica early on in life and has never looked back. Now she can write anywhere, even in a crowded room or a busy subway station, but she loves solitude.

When she’s not at her evil day job, she can be found writing or playing with one of her five cats or the newly acquired dog. She welcomes messages from readers and promises to answer all of them as soon as possible.

The rating for this is more like 4.25, but I'm giving it a 5 for one simple reason. For the first time, someone's done a vampire/werewolf/mating thing RIGHT.

There are a number of authors who I shall leave unnamed, who produce something like a book, or more, a month. And all their books involve shifters of some sort finding their mate and the trials and tribulations thereof. In all these books, the straight guy who suddenly finds a male mate takes all of about 20 minutes to be totally ok with the earthshaking news of their change in sexual orientation. There's some token whining and crying ( often literally ), there's some sort of minor conflict that risks their relationship that's written in as the obligatory "something bad has to happen briefly towards the end of the book" and then you get your happily ever after. I call this book spam. Books that are all copies of each other, except for name changes and a few token details.

All the things those books get wrong, this book gets RIGHT.

The straight guy isn't instantly ok with a male mate, it's a shock that takes some getting used to. The "token conflict" isn't a token at all! It's an engrossing, interesting and integral part of the plot. Bad things happen. Really bad things. But they completely fit in with the plot, and there IS a strong secondary plot other than the relationship between the two mains that runs through the entire book. It doesn't just pop up briefly towards the end as the prerequisite conflict.

The other thing that this book does right is that it lets the relationship and plot develop. It's not like they meet and then a day later everything's ok and they're ready to get married. One of my frequent critiques about the shifter book spam is that all the books take place in fast forward. Here, plot points take time to unravel. You are allowed more than just token, brief insight into what's going on in the characters' heads and how they're growing.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to future works by this author.

Update: I have no patience left. Shawn’s friend and then the hermit were the last straws. DNF-ing at 75%.

- Bad research.
- Bad editing. Especially in the second part of the book.
- Weird dialogue that stretches on forever, but doesn’t offer much. Often it just goes in circles.
- Plot holes... um... not much of a plot, tho. The MCs are running from bad vamps. And talking. And having sex. That’s the plot. Still - plot holes.
- Very little world building. Just two guys on the run. 68% and little to none explanation as to why this is happening, or who is behind it; no history of vamps or jaguars to speak of. OK, so the author did throw us a couple of bones, but even then they were, ugh, bare bones - a bloody murder scene.
- Changing POVs sound the same. Many times I wasn’t sure whose turn/chapter it was.

Will definitely not waste my time on book 2.

——

I am changing my translation-related-crimes shelf to foreign-language-related-crimes. Though this is more of research than language related. The Russian names in the book are messed up. What is common today was not so 300 years ago. Easy enough to look up.

OK, not everyone is going to research (and they don't have to, should be the author's task), so I am explaining the faux pas in question in case anyone is curious:

In Russia, name Valentin was only used by monks and clergy until the second half of 19th century. Obviously, it was not a given birth name. Even assuming Valentin was a monk/father, I highly doubt he would have kept his religious moniker after turning into a vampire (being gay aside).
Shortened name for Valentin that the author used, Vladik, is actually a different name altogether. I left the note in the status updates.

Just… wow. I am flying on a high right now.
This was so serious, and yet so disarmingly funny that I found myself laughing out loud.

I can really get behind the workings of this paranormal world. Vampires are created, and while not following the exact same myths, they still remain mostly true to the initial roots. Even the shifters make sense here, and I especially liked the use of “therian”.

While the writing itself is not the best, the narrative is still deep and engaging.
Yes, we have actual character development and the relationship between Shawn and Valentin is fascinating to behold. It actually develops and has its very own feel to it, quite unlike others I have read.
Viewpoints are sadly messy, although the author appears to have put forth an effort to separate the chunks with dividers. Which results in a lot of very brief chunks and lots of dividers, and even then the viewpoints are not clean. But that’s okay. This book actually really works anyway, barring momentary confusion resulting from the switches.

I do appreciate that the plot is about those two winging it, mostly, while they’re on the run. Man (okay, jaguar and vampire) against nature. While being pursued by evil vampire assassins through partly hostile terrain. ^^ Oh, yeah. This is fun because the protagonists have to actually struggle with normal things, like transportation and the cold, and they are not just presented with ready-made solutions.

They don’t have all the answers, either. In fact they hardly have any answers, nor do they really know how to obtain them. No connections to wise people who are bound to know it all, not even insta-sharing of what they both know. The latter is not for lack of intention, either, simply how it’s tricky to pool information when the questions are so hazy and widespread and their backgrounds so very different.

The fierce, unforgiving nature of the fights contrasts beautifully with the character’s oddly human limitations. And even though this author’s style in its awkward shifting of viewpoints and her use of “the therian” and “the vampire” instead of names half the time removes the reader from the scene, somehow she makes up for that disconnect completely and their emotions, thoughts and actions feel very immediate.

Seriously, the entire plot and the mounting tension in this are simply great. Things become increasingly dire to the point where the threat of does not carry its usual shock value anymore and all one focuses on is for Valentin to survive, no matter the cost. This is excellent stuff and, while gripping, not depressing even slightly!

Honestly, I can see this unfolding as a movie, with a glorious, epic set-piece towards the end that makes your breath stop for a moment, only to return it with glee.

In closing, all I can say is that any flaws in the writing will surely be overcome with more practise, while the brilliance of the storytelling is already present in full force and afforded me a surprising and beautiful experience. <3

Damn, I loved this. :D

This book had the potential of being 4-5 stars. Unfortunately, I was tittering on giving it a 2-3 star rating.

I really loved the vampire/shifter books. I don't come across that many(thus far) and was pleased to find one that also involved 'fated mates'. Especially, in this book, it was rare for you to find your mate(for both the shifter/vampire kind). The shifter, Shawn, is not your common werewolf shifter which I was very excited about when I found out. I also liked that they both didn't automatically jump into the sac after minutes of meeting each other. Shawn, as far as he was concerned, was straight until he stumbled upon his very male mate. As far as fated mates go; It takes him a while to realize his feelings for Valentin(the vampire) are because they are mates. Same goes for Valentin. Valentin, also doesn't believe even if they are fated, their relationship will last.

This book also has action. Valentin is on the run and Shawn has been kicked out of his family. As they are on the run together, they have to learn to trust each other, help keep each other safe and come to terms they are in fact mates. Throw in the mix that Valentin is not healthy and Shawn might be the only one to be able to help him.

Now, why didn't I give this story a 4-5 star rating. I felt the author about 60-70% into the book crams way to much stuff and then rushes the end because of it. The fight scenes in the end are over before they begin. You find out more information, but then isn't elaborated on it. I thought, maybe, there would be a book 2, to at least help tighten up this ending better. Sadly, there is not.

This was really very good,

My only reservations with the book were in terms of the world building. I am the biggest fan of letting the world unfold as the story progresses but this was a little too sketchy in the telling in places. It was spare in the details, and some juicy details about the places, situations and charcters woud have fleshed this out to a realy cool tale.

I really really loved the main characters and I hope Aimee Brissay is given a ot more publishing opportunities.

I really enjoyed this book. I truly hope this is not the last we will see of Valentin and Shawn. I would love to see Valentin grow into the master he is promised to be. Shawn also need to avenge his mother. The fight sequences were awesome. Well done by the author.

I love the premise. Paranormal/fated mates that transcends species. So kudos for the author's imagination and bringing this together.

Overlooking some editing mistakes, I didn't feel the connection between the MCs, even though they are supposed to have this amazing fated mates thing going on.

The story mystery arc felt rushed, as did the romance for that matter. Good start, but lacking in a few areas.

First time with this author. The story was unique in regards to pairing a Jaguar with a Vampire. I wonder if she would expand on this series with Shawn and Valentin looking for the ruby. This was a great start.

I really enjoyed Shawn and Valentin's story, I was content with the ending, but I'd definitely wouldn't say no to a sequel. I liked the plot and the characters, I didn't realize that Shawn was a shifter when I started the story, so that was a nice surprise. This wasn't terribly long either, which I liked for this story.

Coming back to write a review after several days.
I wanted to say how much I loved this book. It had everything a typical shifters book has, but it was totally different. Firstly, I really loved the fact that Aimee set the action in Romania. It's such a rare occurrence, and she did a wonderful job in pinpointing the locations. It was quite an exciting read for this reason alone.
Secondly, I loved the fact that mating, which in most shifter books is something extremely cheesy and unbelievable, in Perfect Timing is something less ... insta-love inducing. Sure, the MCs are immediately attracted to each other, even though one of them isn't even gay or was never with a guy to be more accurate, but they don't fall head-over-heels the moment they set eyes on each other, nor do they immediately hump against one another and mark each other to prove they're mates. I really liked this. Their feelings for each other grow naturally, and it's something quite rare in books from this genre.
I can't wait to read more from Aimee.

I truly enjoyed this story. The plot was pulling from the start. I really liked how Valentin and Shawn met. Even more enjoyable was their mutual attraction and the bickering between them. The plot was well written and the text flown easily. At the end I wished it was longer.
So in general I truly liked this bonded pair and how this story developed. And I hope we will get more stories from all those created characters. I liked them all.

I have to say it was enjoyable book. Both main characters are interesting. At the same time its just a normal vampire-shifter story. And at the end we still have some open doors.

I loved this book. I was engrossed in this story every step of the way. The banter between the two characters was what enjoyed most along with a great story line and great characters. A must read!!

I really enjoyable read that has a little romance, a little mystery, a lot of paranormal and a little humour, and some figghting as you'd expect in a paranormal book. So put it another way it is a paranormal, mystery, romantic thriller. It certainly has you on the edge of your seat in parts and all gooey in other parts. You will be wanting to read just one more page .... and just one more and so on.

Valentin is a vampire on the run from other vampires, after he witnessed his coven being wiped out and his sire poisoned. He knows his time is numbered, on top of that he drank his Sires blood to see who killed him. The blood has poisoned his system and he is slowly losing his powers.

Shawn is a were-cat Jaguar, that has left his pride (pack) when he meets Valentin in a bar. something attracts him to the Vampire. and he instantly feels protective of the vampire. And so the story starts when three powerful vampires turn up and attack them. Succeeding in escaping we are off on a adventure and chase across Europe.

I loved Shauwns protective nature of Valentin, Both characters are well rounded but with Valentin 's health slowing failing it is up to Shawn to look out for him. But Valentin is taken before Shawn can get his head around being fated to a vampire. He has to figure out a way to save his mate before it is too late.

The story is nicely paced and the world is presented to us vividly. I felt the atmosphere around the characters and the fear they were in.

An exciting read for any Paranormal book lover.

It’s safe to say I’m not continuing with the series. There were SO MANY grammatical and spelling errors as well as inconsistencies. Valentin says he doesn’t breathe. Why? Because he’s a vampire and he’s dead…duh. But then Shawn is relieved to see that he’s still breathing even though he looks close to death????? In the pub, Shawn sees Valentin for the first time and makes a comment how he can’t pick up a pulse because he doesn’t have one. Again, because he’s vampire. But then he proceeds to feel for his pulse and is relieved to feel it under his palm when Valentin was sick. So on one hand, Valentin doesn’t breath and doesn’t have a heartbeat, but then a few chapters later he does???? What the fuck?
Also, this book felt like it had no real plot and everything was so ridiculously rushed. There was way too much smut to the point where it was uncomfortable and for fuck’s sake, they had known each other for a week and they already loved each other??? Also why is Shawn so nonchalant when all his life he was straight??? There was also way too much dialogue in this book to the point where it felt so wishy-washy because so much of it was just excessive. And there was nothing complex or interesting about the dialogue at all. I also won’t get over how ‘Valentin’ was spelt with an ‘e’ at the end once. I mean come on, some of these mistakes are just ridiculous.

What an captivating book the writing was amazing. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. The characters were well developed and thought out. I found the story and characters compelling. Valentin Alekseev is a Vampire and Shawn Dougal is a Jaguar Shifter and they are the MC’s of this book and mates. There was humor, Vampires, shifters, a stone, poison, Wizard, a sadistic killer, a castle, torture and so much more in this book.

Here is a quote from the book, “Now, all his worldly possessions consisted of the car, the money in his wallet, the clothes on his back, and whatever little he had in his duffel bag. And apparently a vampire with an attitude as a companion.”. There is more but you will need to read the book which I can highly recommend. I really enjoyed this book and hope that there is one to follow it. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

I couldn't finish this. I ended at 70%. (I saved my progress, so I may continue at a later date and rate it.)

The pacing was awkward and it felt more like the author was trying to /tell/ me a story rather than let the story tell itself. Half of what I read felt like filler and the other half felt like it was trying to rush through to the ending.

The skip from strangers to lovers was unbelievably quick, Like, first few chapters of a 200-so page book, quick. I've never been a fan of 'insta-love' stories where their partner is picked out by whatever fate/s the story has. It seemed as if they just met and then are referring to each other (in their heads) as their 'Lover'.

Overall, it wasn't a bad book, nor was it very good. It was kind of in the middle. It has its good points and negative ones. I don't feel comfortable rating this because I didn't finish it, I would have rated it about 3 stars if I had.

Out of Hope (Perfect Timing Book 1)

One problem one doesn’t get with a pocketbook. It doesn’t update and change both the title and the cover picture. Makes finding it in the Kindle APP a challenge.

Read a sample and got it as a free download over a year ago. It was only after reading a while I discovered the book involved an M+M between a shape-shifting feline, panther, and a vampire. Shawn, the cat, discovered to his shock the sensation that his mate was male and an immortal. This story demands that you accept homoeroticism, vampirism, and shape shifters. Quite a leap of faith. Then there’s the small matter of an interspecies mating and blood sucking. Calling a black panther a kitten?

The pair of lovers are running from a menacing evil magical presence. There’s an HEA finish.

Like too many e-books I’ve encountered recently this one needs further editing.

An interesting enough vampire/shifter book

I enjoyed this book; good not great. It was an enjoyable read with characters that kept me just interested enough to keep reading and a plot that had me curious enough to finish. The problem is, that exact plot that kept me curious brought up plenty of questions which it absolutely never answered. From the beginning question about the missing rock, questions about the sickness, up to the end question about vampire mates, all of these things were brought up but not answered by the end. One of the characters even commented how there were so many unanswered questions and looming problems. This ending was just a bit too open for my liking.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I thought this book was very well written and I loved the shifter/vampire dynamic. Shawn is a Jaguar shifter that just lost his home and family when he meets Valentin, a vampire running for his life. Shawn has never been attracted to a man before and is confused by his feelings for Valentin. They go on the run together and Shawn realises that Valentin is his mate. Valentin has to deal with his past so they can have a future together. I love a happy ending and this book delivers. I look forward to reading more books by Aimee Brissay as I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

This was a great story, involving, Shawn (jaguar) and Valentin (vampire). I love the fact that they were fated mates, and how cute they were as they were slowly discovering each other. It was well written, and I was totally pulled into the story. It's always fun for me to read about a vampire and a shifter mating, which I find to be quite fascinating. I don't want to give much more away, but this was a very imaginative, and sweet read. :)

Straight male shifter and gay male vampire encounter each other and the shifter decides the vampire is his mate. Lots of danger, action, sex (way to much), and heroics.
Honestly, after a while I mostly skimmed to the end to get to the climax and conclusion.
English usage is a bit rough, with awkward wording, a few mix-ups (hoard for horde, peak for peek, wracked for racked), extra or missing words, sentence fragments, and wrong verb tenses.

I really, really liked this story! I loved the MCs and their slow burn romance. This Vampire/Shifter mating was a bit different and I loved that. The only reason I'm not giving this story 5 stars is because, in my opinion, the ending leaves some things up in the air and there are a few minor editing issues.

This is one of those stories that calls for a sequel but sadly there isn't one. Still, I think it's a story is well worth the read.
