I have read two other of Colbert’s books and had to filter out some things that seemed to go against common sense. (His book on hormones was helpful to me, but his promise that I could feel forty years younger by following all of his advice seemed over the top. His book on the seven pillars of health had a great list of healthful practices, but some of his recommendations went beyond what the average person could do.)

After some recent bloodwork, I knew I had to bring my hemoglobin A1c levels down, and thought “Reversing Diabetes” would have some good suggestions. And it does. Colbert explains insulin resistance and how to make better dietary choices. He makes a strong case for the elimination of excess fat around the waist. But in order to do that, he recommends a drastic “rapid weight reduction” diet, which is where I began to differ strongly with him. The method was odd. First of all, you have to detox for a month before starting the RWRD, eating only organic food. Then for the first two days of the diet, you take the pregnancy hormone hCG and eat as many good fats and calories as possible every three hours. Then you begin a seven-day meal plan that requires taking a PGX fiber pill before each meal to make you feel full. The six weeks of phase one are followed by a second phase, which focuses on maintaining your new weight.

I guess I’m one of those strange people that would like to learn to eat and exercise better rather than pop a lot of pills. I am not against supplements. I take several, but he recommends so many that it is mind-boggling. Not only dozens of pills, but some are twice a day, some three times, some four a day. Who can keep track of all that?

He concludes his chapter on supplements by writing, “Let me remind you, the foundation for weight loss is simple: a healthy dietary plan and regular physical activity. Period.”

I wish the second half of the book reflected that!

I have a lot of negative feelings about this book and it's author Don Colbert.

Yes, there was a sprinkling of good information and statistics about diabetes and what a person can do about it.
However, the first and last third of the book was heavily laced with a strong Christian message.
"Believe in Jesus Christ and ask Him to heal you." I thought that was very inappropriate for a book about Diabetes.

The middle of the book was one gigantic advertisement for other Don Colbert books.
I.e. "to get rid of your waist line so you can recover from diabetes you have to follow the diet written about in my book "blahblah", but of course you first have to read my book "blahblahblah" and follow the detox diet in that book for a month. cha-ching, cha-ching. I can hear Don Colbert getting rich. Every reader buys two more books to get the diet right.

And if you thought this diet would help you stay away from taking drugs you are in for a surprise. Because part of this diet is, yes you guessed it by now, taking more drugs!!!! Be afraid, be very afraid.

All the advertising for other books the author had written and the huge push to give your life to Jesus Christ was a major put off in this book. And I would not call this a "whole-body" approach. It's a mind and soul approach if you involve Jesus Christ.

For Don I have the following message: "Either write about diabetes or write about Religion. But do not disguise your pushing religion on people with a title to help people recover from diabetes. That's a no no in my book."

I was going to give one star for giving some good hints about diabetes and no extra stars for pushing so many other agendas without being honest about it. But on second thoughts I am not awarding any stars at all for pushing a diet onto people that is impossible to follow unless you study it for months and take drugs with it.

I think there are many better books written to help diabetics on their road to recovery. And you won't need to have a degree in Don Colbert books and change your religious beliefs in order to get well.

In Reversing Diabetes, Don Colbert revealed the epidemic concerning the growing number of patients diagnosed with diabetes. He shared the following statistics from the 2011 CDC report, "nearly twenty-six million people have diabetes, or 8.3 percent of the US population" (Page 11). Diabetes has increased rapidly because of the chemicals that are being produced in our foods. Another reason is our society is becoming inactive and not doing any activities that promote good health. The book will teach readers what kinds of foods are healthy and what foods that they will need to avoid. He discussed the hidden contributors that lead to obesity and diabetes. The book also contains a meal plan to guide readers in reducing their waist size. Reducing your waist size lowers your chance of getting diabetes and it helps to control diabetes if you already have it.

I don't have diabetes but it runs in my family blood line. I learned a great deal of information about taking steps to prevent getting diabetes. I would recommend this book to everyone because it is an extremely important topic that we all have to stand up against. Diabetes can happen to anyone and the book helped me to see the effects and dangers of consuming all the wrong types of foods. The book suggested starting to drink green tea because it assisted in relieving stress levels and scorching fat! "The EGCG in green tea increases the metabolic rate for as long as twenty-four hours and stimulates the body to burn fat" (Page 121). It also helps decrease your risk of getting diabetes and some cancers! I took the book's advice and have started drinking a few cups a day. I am also started eating healthier foods and working out four days a week. This book is a wonderful guide in becoming healthy and living a long life!

incredible amount of information, some almost contrary to other data i have read in magazines, health pampletes, the ADA and other medical related media. cuts to the truth about what you need to do to minimize if not remove the need for diabetes medication. not that you will always be able to skirt taking those but it gives hope that if you do the work, watch what you eat and live a healthy lifestyle you can stop taking the meds for a period of time. i plan to use this as my path forward to manage blood sugar, excersize, eating and living since i dislike the drugs, have some of the side effects, and hate the smell and taste of the drugs and what it does to my breath. this has been a minor part of the depression and stress that has made my behavior eratic, dispondant and just plain difficult because i did not understand what was happening to my body or why... i have paid for not knowing, dearly! wish i had this six years ago when i was diagnosed and i will continue to read this over and over.

I would've probably given this more stars if the data wasn't so outdated. This book advocated frequent snacking and avoiding animal fats. For me, the book was also too technical and included some mumbo jumbo that was very uninteresting.

All in all, I have read more interesting books on this topic.

There is a lot of decent information that you would find in any other book about diabetes, but his method for reversing diabetes is alternating Hcg shots for 6 weeks at 500 or 1000 calories with the Mediterranean diet for 4 weeks until you have lost all your belly fat and go back to that whenever you gain more than 2 pounds. He also thinks that when you are eating you should start each meal with 2 PGX capsules and he has a slew of powders and nutritional supplements that he recommends.

Dr. Colbert pretty much confirms what I already know. Diet and exercise helps a bunch. I just have to do it. Some of his supplements are a little "out there", but overall worth reading for a Type 2 diabetic.

This book was fantastic. I learned so much on what to do to rid the body of the symptoms of diabetes. I will be doing everything the book has told me, but I can't do the added supplements. Not to many doctors here believe in what Dr. Colbert does in regards to riding the body of diabetes.

The diet or lifestyle plan is a sensible approach to living a healthy life but I am not into the whole hcg craze. Clean eating and exercise that's the way to do it.

Great informational book for those who want to learn more about diabetes. At times, the picture Dr. Colbert painted was very scary. However, I know the plan that God has for me, his plan to prosper me and not harm me, it is to give me a future and hope ( Jeremiah 29:11). Dr. Colbert shares his medical knowledge with the reader and the encouragement that comes from the Word of God. I truly appreciated that.
