When Tigger and Roo tell Pooh they have just seen a dragonfly, he misunderstands and begins to worry about a flying dragon loose in the Hundred-Acre Wood.
Just yesterday I said Ann Braybrooks was a pretty consistently decent Pooh writer, and then I had to go and read this today.
Pooh hears Roo say he saw a dragonfly and assumes Roo meant he saw a dragon fly by in the sky. He also assumes dragons love honey, so he gets all stressed and decides it would be best to be proactive and trap it. So, in the end, it all ends up being a copy of -- or to be generous -- homage to the Heffalump sequences from the Milne book and Disney movies. But with dragons.
Blech.
(My Pooh Project: I love Winnie the Pooh, and so does my wife. Having a daughter gave us a chance to indoctrinate her into the cult by buying and reading her every Pooh book we came across. How many is that? I’m going to count them this year by reading and reviewing one every day and seeing which month I finally run out. Track my progress here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list... )
This is a great fun modern Winnie the Pooh book. Whilst it's a long way from the AA Milne classic stories, it is the Disney version of a fun English adventure for Pooh bear and his friends. Pooh mishears his friends when they tell him about seeing a dragon-fly and thinks a dragon has invaded 100 acre Wood. He plans traps and things to scare it off with Piglet only to discover his friends mean dragonflies - the small and fun insect. Fun and gentle and exciting!
Again, gotta love the creatures from the Hundred Acre Wood and I could use this for teaching science, homonyms, and compound words. Activating prior knowledge and context clues are a must in reading and living from day to day.
Mama read this to me during a second story time today! We were in my rocker, and afterwards we looked out the window to see if I could see any dragonflies - or dragons flying!
It is kind of funny how Piglet and Pooh thought a dragon fly was a dragon. And how they caught Tiger in a net. Tiger replied, "Tigers do not like to be caught!"
