During my undergraduate years (where I did an honours degree in German and French), I (at first a bit grudgingly I admit) took an advanced German grammar and writing course in my first year. And albeit said course certainly did end up being (at times) rather boring and tedious for me (because I am bilingual in German and English and a lot of the German grammar points that were being covered I already knew pretty much thoroughly), I am indeed (and in retrospect) really happy I did listen to my German professors and decided to take this particular course, its occasional draggingness notwithstanding. For indeed, the course really and immensely improved my German writing style, so that by the end of the semester, I was writing acceptable and sufficiently concise academic German and my German language term papers and hand in assignments thankfully were no longer reading and sounding like a ten year old penning cute but unsubstantial letters to German aunts, uncles and grandparents with regard to style, vocabulary choices and complexity of syntax (which was also not all that surprising either since I actually had not written anything but informal and chatty letters to German family members since I was ten, since we moved to Canada, and that therefore, this was definitely something that needed rectifying and changing).
Now with regard to the textbooks (for the advanced grammar course), while I no longer own a copy of the grammar review tome we were using, do not even recall the book title (and only remember that it provided an adequate overview of German grammar but featured annoyingly silly examples and painfully tedious exercises), I do in fact and indeed still own and make quite regular use of the two supplemental Duden books we were encouraged to purchase, Die sinn- und sachverwandten Wörter (a thesaurus) and Das Stilwörterbuch (which is a stylistic dictionary). And while I have not over the decades (for my German language writing both during and post university) consulted Das Stilwörterbuch quite as much as the thesaurus, as Die sinn- und sachverwandten Wörter, there indeed were rather a few instances when I was writing German language term papers during my MA and my PhD (including my dissertation) when looking up vocabulary words and expressions in Das Silwörterbuch saved me from using vernacular or inappropriate for academic writing idiomatic expressions in my texts. So yes, for this I am really grateful and do certainly consider Das Stilwörterbuch a very decent and in my opinion also necessary language and writing resource, although yes, like with ALL German language reference tools, I would personally ONLY recommend editions published post 2000, post the 1996 German spelling reforms.
