Nate Hawkins was a close friend of fellow air force pilot Scott Pierce. But he concealed one fact from Scott: Nate was in love with Scott's wife, Laurel. Now Scott is dead—and Laurel is obviously pregnant. But the timing's off, and as far as Nate's concerned, that can mean only one thing.
Nate doesn't know it, but he's wrong. After years of fertility treatments, Laurel is indeed pregnant—with Scott's child. She loved her husband faithfully. But despite herself, she's starting to fall in love with Nate, the man Scott admired above all others. The man who believes she betrayed her husband…his friend. But despite himself, Nate wants to be with Laurel, a woman he considers another man's wife.

I don't usually pick up a book with a pregnant woman falling in love with a man not the father of her baby, but there was something about this one that intrigued me. Laurel had been an Air-force wife for nine years and through those years, she and Scott had struggled with infertility. When she finally fell pregnant through IVF Scott was halfway around the world. He received the happy news only hours before he died in a crash.
When Scott's best friend Nate sees Laurel heavily pregnant only six months after her husbands death and a year after he knew Scott had been home he is angry and disappointed. He could only see one reason for her pregnancy and that meant she had betrayed Scott.
With such a bad start it wouldn't be surprising if their romance foundered. Both had to deal with guilt and grief and also the reactions of the people around them.
Without fail every one in this book is a nice person. They are family people who care about their husbands, wives, children and are loyal to their friends. This story is about what happens when people face grief and loss while learning that life and love continues.
This is a really sweet story with a strong heroine and a hunky hero and a substantial cast of characters in their families.
This is an old Harlequin Superromance that I put off reading because I thought it was going to be boring. It wasn't. Laurel Pierce is a recent widow whose military husband died in a plane crash. His best friend is stunned to discover Laurel is pregnant since her husband couldn't possibly be the father. He assumes she must have been cheating and if her husband found out that would explain his crash. Nate is livid. He has put Laurel on a pedestal since his best friend married her. In fact, if he was honest, he would admit to being half in love with her. The idea that she cheated crushes him. But that is not what happened. Laurel had undergone fertility treatments and her husband was aware that it had been successful. But Laurel's marriage was not perfect. Nate thinks he is competing with memory he can't beat. Can Laurel convince him that they are two different people with a different relationship? I liked the characters and the story and it was an easy read.
Recently I won this book on Listia.. As soon as I read the description of the book I KNEW I had to read it. On the first page I knew I wouldn't be able to put this book down. When I wrote this review I couldn't think of the words to express how I felt about this book... All I can say is that this book left me Speechless (in a good way).
