A universal master whose achievement is timeless, Shakespeare is nevertheless inseparable from his age - the brilliant pageant of Elizabethan England, glorified by Queen and courtiers, soldiers and explorers, Renaissance poets and scholars. Theatrical professional and consummate dramatist, Shakespeare wove the human comedy being played all around him into masterpieces which have shaped the English language to this day.
There was an old playwright called Will Who had more than ink in his quill Whatever was in it Came not from our planet And the scholarly think on it still
Another wonderful book from the New Horizon series. Here we turn from play analysis to insight into the social/cultural aspects of England in Shakespeare's time. Chapters one and two look at Stratford-upon-Avon and London. Chapter three examines the theaters of the time (Rose, Globe, etc.). The final two cover the Elizabethean and Jacobite eras. The book ends with a section, entitled "Documents," containing critical writings and discussions of productions and interpretations of the plays including the cinema. The highlight are the copious illustrations of paintings and tapestries. Many are accompanied by relevant excerpts from plays. A must read for any fan of Shakespeare.
