Crypto Zoologist Drake Whitton works as a genetics professor at Colin City College while he figures out how to remove the eccentric label from his name, given to him by his peer’s response to his last paper on the existence of the chupacabra. He thinks he’s found the opportunity he needs when a private firm asks him to dissect and analyze a new DNA strand, and he discovers it contains both human and reptilian characteristics. His plans are derailed when his car gets hijacked by a detective on the run, his home gets broken into by people from the corporation he’s been doing research for, and he gets seduced by the doctor assigned to care for the hijacker. Doctor Ailean Carmichael never expects to find a mate, let alone a human one, but he’s willing to take what Fate gives him. After all, not all humans are like his late foster parents, right? And an orphaned, exiled black jaguar living in a wolf shifter’s territory doesn’t have too many options. He decides seducing the naïve professor will be delicious fun for both of them, until Ailean realizes he needs to protect his little mate from those bent on experimenting on and eradicating shifters. But when Ailean discovers Drake actually works for the scientists trying to destroy him and his friends, will he take the time to listen to Drake’s explanation? Or will he decide all humans really are the same?
As with the other stories in this series, this one was cute. I liked the story because it forced Ailean to get passed his distaste for humans since his mate is a human.
I also liked the fact that Drake had an unintentional part in the issues related to these new superhuman people the pack has been in contact with in the past. Then there's the fact that Lyle was found again and what he now is. While the story isn't original, I liked the simplistic style of the story. It was easy and nice to read.
That's not to say it doesn't have its faults. The book needed better editing especially with name mix ups and missing words from sentences. I was also confused sometimes on who was saying what. It could have been my format but I also think it was an over use of the pronoun 'he'. I wished there would have been more details about everything. Like for instance with the whole Lyle situation. There wasn't even a hint that he was growing scales until it was stated they were receding. And how Drake did not know what his findings were being tested towards blows my mind because aren't scientists anal about that sort of thing?
Still, in the end, I liked the story. Ailean was a bit of an asshole but I liked the added issue of his mate being human with all the things humans have done to him. I'm looking forward to reading Lyle and Todd's story. Seriously, this series is addicting even if they aren't exactly extravagant.
I love a good shifter story and this one is great!! Lots of testosterone, lots of mine!! mine!!, emotions pouring from the pages, plenty of fur and lots of grrrrrrrr. Excellent!!
Thank goodness this is a series. Four down, fourteen to go. Shifter story bliss!!
This book continues the story of the Stone Ridge pack, as well as the integration of other shifter types into the storyline. I was happy to see some of the earlier characters reappear and to find out how they were doing. The focus of this volume, however, is two rather anti-social characters who have to learn how to deal with each other. Needless to say, their backgrounds do not exactly make them ideal "relationship material". The fact that it is the shifter who is struggling with accepting that he has a human mate, rather than the other way around, was a nice change versus the more usual situation of a human struggling with the sudden reality that shifters do exist.
Drake is a rather nerdy professor who loves to focus on his research. He isn’t very good at seeing anything beyond the four walls of his lab, and even his brother, who is more sociable, can’t really help him there. Drake does learn quickly, though, and begins to understand that considering the consequences of his research and its effect on others is just as important as getting the formula right. He is also a crypto zoologist, and as such has hungered for evidence of "unusual creatures" for years. The fact that shifters exist is probably less of a surprise for him than for the average human, but seeing his lover turn into a panther is still a bit of a shock, and I loved the way that scene played out.
Ailean is a rather lonely and anti-social jaguar shifter, who was not only rejected by his human adoptive parents when they found out he is not quite human, but also by other shifters, based on the fact he is black in shifted form. The fact that Ailean is a doctor is probably his saving grace, since it lets him at least stay in touch with humans, even though he doesn’t think very highly of them.
The two men have a lot of hang-ups to overcome, they have to start to communicate and trust each other; with their backgrounds, that is not easy. On the other hand, their need to be loved is just as real as anyone else’s and the comfort they can give each other more significant, because they know what the other’s fate was like.
If you like shifter stories with struggling characters who have a lot to learn, and if you enjoy a good plot with growing hints of a deeper conspiracy that develops across several shorter novellas, you might like this book. This series fascinates me and I look forward to the next installment of this story.
I could not put this story down once I started. It's nice that these stories are short. I liked the diversity here. I like how straight forward Ailean was and how shy and nerdy Drake was, I could definitely believe he was an inexperienced virgin.
I love that these guys had that fight and were separated for a bit but then it made it all the better when Ailean let his animal instinct take over when he thought some else wanted to take his mate. So good!
When you read one of the books in this series you know what your getting! Growl, my mate, mine, sex and more sex! !!! Nothing terrible original ( well except for the elephant shifter in the last book) but fun for sure, and of course I will be reading the next one, because really, what will Lyle turn into? I want to know! And I suspect Daegus mate somewhere on the horizon.
I was enjoying this series, but then Todd raped Lyle and everyone acted like that was okay just because they were mates. Nope, not okay in any situation.

Well... I don't read these for the stellar writing and new take on shifters... This is purely recreational to let my mind just drift along for a bit. I do like that the author is intent on bringing out something more than the average wolf/bear/ big, BIG cat shifter into the light. Here it was a black panther who was seen as a bad omen and thrown out from his pack (pride??) There was some unnecessary drama and a enforcer acting as a diva... Still entertaining enough...
Wow. Our doctor here was a scumbag. The first protagonist in this series whom I did not like. But I am getting ahead of myself.
I re-read the first three books of this series and continued with the fourth now.
This is one I really like. The series, I mean. I like the general feel of it, the way shifter society works and usually all the characters. Strangely these books seem a lot shorter this time, and not just the ones I’ve read previously. Stuff like this could completely do with being explored in a longer way per couple. But it’s neat either way.
While the author does have certain issues with homophones and some aspects of grammar and style, this is never anything but enjoyable, so I’m not going to be picky here.
This book now? Eh. I am not going to complain. Much. It just felt so short and Ailean was a jerk, so he did not really have to grovel much in the end, probably due to space constraints or whatever. The romance between the guys did not strike me as romancy at all, really. We had physical attraction, the experienced shifter seducing the nerdy virgin. but the whole love thing really did not convince me. Those guys honestly did not know one another by the end of the book other than through a few bouts of sex; certainly not enough for real love to make sense.
Ah, I don’t care. There are more books to come, and although the whole science angle makes me uncomfortable as always I am optimistic that I will like most of the rest. <3
Book four in the series picks up right where book three left off pursuing the disappearance of Grady's detective partner. This is Dr. Ailean Carmichael's story and it was hilarious to discover that the crusty doctor's newly discovered mate was human. As with the rest of the series, it is a fast-action romance because of the fated mate, but there are various obstacles that come between the two to make it not as simple as just finding the mate.
In this case, the obstacle is not just Ailean's dislike for humans. Actually, poor Ailean accepted his little human, Drake, quickly until he discovered that his human is a scientist who did contract work for a company that captures and experiments on shifters and humans including Grady's partner, Lyle, who starts the story by hijacking Drake to bring him to Grady.
I enjoyed the plot and the characters. Sweet and innocent Drake who is filled with wonder that he has attracted the big handsome doctor. He understands little of what is going on under the surface of things, but accepts it as he does Ailean. Ailean was hurt and misunderstood by humans. He prefers to be alone until he meets Drake. Big, curmudgeonly Ailean doesn't know what to do with his little human mate, but for once he's willing to go with it. It was nice to have the newly mated Gordon and Grady in the story as well as other former pairs from previous books.
I look forward to finding out what happens next with poor Todd and Lyle as well as maybe Drake's brother, Dagus.
half a star this one has a lot of problems. The plot as well as its execution was very weak and faulty. No person in their right mind would ever react to the situations pictured the way Drake did. There are so many ridiculous situations and reactions in this book that listing them alone would take at least a whole day. I really wonder how on earth did this book get published? Unfortunately I bought the whole series on an impulse, so I guess I continue with it , whilst commuting.
WoW. Did someone else attempt to write this story? There were a lot of parts that just didn't flow well to me at all. The couple's story was brought across, but sure was hard to follow. Plus, it was pretty fast pass.
Ailean has had bad pass with humans. He is not a huge fan of them but is surprised to meet his mate and he is a human. Drake is a scientist, who unbeknownst works for the same company that the poachers are from. He ends up finding the missing detective and brings him to the hospital and meets a very sexy doctor. The doctor decides you only get one mate and decides to accept him... for now. Ailean is very aggressive towards his mate. He is practically a stalker. Drake is thrown through a 'crash course' of experiences. When he finally feels a connection with Ailean, Ailean tosses him to the side. They didn't have very much communication, leaving the pack having inform Drake about the truth.
Even though Drake's heart is broken over his mate(even though they were together for like a week if that), he tries his best to create a solution to a problem he created(indirectly). Hopefully, Ailean will be able to come around to getting over himself and accepting his mate before he loses him forever.
This is actually a pretty simple shifter tale with an un-original plot but the deliver was so good! Sometimes it isn’t a matter of what is written but how it’s written. It’s the difference between a tone deaf person and a trained singer, singing the same song. Which would you rather hear? The author further expanded on this by not having your average leading characters.
Sure you get nerdy characters here and there but Drake is different in that he isn’t the diamond in the rough that is just ignorant to what other’s see. Which is normally the case when it comes to nerd characters. Nope, Drake really is the antisocial, too skinny, and really non-awe inspiring nerd. He doesn’t grow into himself, he is who he is. So when you see Ailean look at this normal run of the mill nerd and see awe inspiring, well it gave ump to the story. Ailean is an interesting character because he really is an asshole, to the point that you might not think he is good enough for Drake however this played well with their connection and you really felt that they balanced each other.

The downside to the book is that it really isn’t a stand alone. I’ve read one other book in this series so I wasn’t completely lost and yet there were still points that I went huh because of missing the previous book. I can only imagine how confusing this might be for someone who hasn’t read any of the stories in the series. It’s still readable but a little difficult to understand because the author weaved in pieces of the other stories. I kind of felt that more detail should have gone into the background stories or the author shouldn’t have weaved as much as she did.
As far as gay shifter romances go, Accepting His Human is top notch.
This was your typical shifter, insta-love story with an adorable MC that kept me invested. Drake is geeky, skinny, inexperienced scientist. He's either teaching, absorbed in his research or taking care of his blind brother. He's simply stunned when a gorgeous doctor takes a sudden sexual interest in him and starts calling him "little mate." I appreciated the diversity presented here, but I could have done without the repetitive descriptions of the MC's skin tone as mocha and chocolate.
Ailean (still not sure how to pronounce that) was harder to get to know. Because of his past, he's got trust issues regarding humans. His back story seemed interesting, but it was barely explored. At one point, he treats Drake very poorly. I wanted some major groveling but didn't get it. I also didn't get much in the way of the MCs getting to know each other. There's a lot of sex for a book this short.
I liked this book. The concept isn't terribly original but the execution of what is a fairly standard plot for shifter stories is done beautifully. I liked the MC's and the continuation of the story arc from the previous books. I'm enjoying the world these stories take place in and love how they are all threaded together.
The only major gripe I have is with the cover. As a QPOC (queer person of color) one of the things I appreciate about this series is that there are POC's in the books. Drake is clearly described as bi-racial and having the physical characteristics of a bi-racial male. The whitewashing on the cover really bothers me b/c it takes away one of the aspects of the series that makes it so refreshing for me- it removes the representation of the POC MC character in the book. It may seem like a small complaint but when you are a member of a group that gets precious little representation to begin with, erasure on any level hurts :(
The more I read of this series, the more I like the storyline and want to know what happens next, besides a shifter finding his mate.
This book was rather unique as it features Ailean who has some hang ups about humans (which are so understandable) and is also quite anti-social. He's paired with Drake a shy, socially awkward professor, whose research results are tested without his knowledge.
As much as I like the overall mate-mine-theme, I wish this story had been a bit longer and more elaborate. Don't get me wrong, I liked the story, but it felt too rushed and left me wanting for more. More background, more effort to make things work on Ailean's part, more pages...
To me it felt a bit like ordering a double chocolate cheesecake with whipped cream, but only getting a plain chocolate cake. Still tasty but missing some things...
I am seriously devouring this series. This one was not my fave only because I felt a little distant and aloof from the characters. I did love how the bad guys info is slowly coming out and how different shifters are and how similar to humans. Lots of sex, perhaps sacrificing a little more depth with plot and history that would be welcomed. I still want to know what the shifters who've been alive for 100+ years think - I mean they've lived through many wars, seen major changes, etc yet it never reflects in how they live their lives. That's my only criticism really - that part seems undeveloped and quite rich for mining stories that will really fully flesh out this world. Otherwise just like Peanut M&M's which I can never eat just one of :)
Missing words and mixing up names. Each book seems to get worse and worse as far as editing goes.
Also didn't really like that he doesn't even think about condoms while fucking the guy he has just met less than a day ago. But then later says he shouldn't have put out on a first date but never did this supposed scientist think maybe he should have used a condom with the stranger?
Then after he's a huge asshole all is just instantly forgiven. They fuck and all is right with the world. Blah blah.
First read Dec. 18th 2013 I really didn't like Ailean. I thought he was kind of a dick. Yeah, I get that he had a rough past, but can you give Drake a chance to explain? I mean, he IS your mate after all.
I would have liked to have learned more about what Drake did and how he got involved. How long has he been working for them? Did he meet anybody?
Poor Lyle :(
I WANT MORE DAGUS! I really liked Grady in this one too :) Kicking Ailean in the ass when he needed it.
I have to say that Ailean is probably my least favorite shifter. He kind of acts like an asshole to almost everyone human and he isn't even that nice to other shifters. Luckily, his mate Drake is smart and nice and ultimately forgiving since Ailean treats him pretty badly in this story. We do get the beginnings of a resolution on the cliffhanger from Book 3, but nothing is certain at all. I'll be interested to see what happens.
Cute enough story but I was hoping for a little more...something to the whole big crisis. It was a little too pat. I was hoping it was a little more out of the box thinking. Still it was a nice story with interesting enough characters. I am just getting a little over the "typical" misunderstanding troupe.
This is my least favorite of the series. Ailean may have baggage, but he treats his mate, drake, with little respect. He calls him "little mate" ad nauseum, c,sims him without permission or informing him, then dumps him painfully and publicly. All Aileans mistakes are supposed to be overlooked, but drakes aren't. Just a very unlike able character for me.
Much like Stormy Glenn, Charlie Richards infuses her stories with just enough intrigue and endearing romance to make it possible for to me overlook bad writing. Not great, but a pleasant way to pass the time if you're in the mood for some sappy m/m shifter fun. Be warned that Richards sucks at dirty talk. The sex scenes can be a little awkward at times.
Wolves of Stone Ridge #4 continues the series arc but is a good read in itself. These books are short, sweet, and spicy. Some complain that the Insta-love is trite and resolved Aliean's internal conflict over his mare too easily, however, I'm not always looking for angst and conflict so I was quite happy with it.
