29 books231 followersThe first thing I ever wrote that received any notice was a one page story for my third grade English teacher. I don't recall what the assignment was, but I somehow found myself writing about a woman at a dinner party who suddenly realizes her teeth are invisible. She sits there, wedged between two chattering guests, wondering how she will eat, how she will talk, and generally how she will get out of the situation without having to open her mouth and reveal her dilemma. My teacher showed the story to my parents with a note to this effect: Katia could be a writer.
What if her note had instead encouraged me to be a dentist?
But it didn't. And so here I am.
So far I've published two literary novels (as Katia Spiegelman, the name I was born with), and seven suspense novels--five as Kate Pepper (a pseudonym) and two as Katia Lief (the name I live by). And to complicated things even more, I'm adding a new pen name to my arsenal-Karen Ellis-with my new novel A MAP OF THE DARK, coming January 2, 2018.
I have loved writing every one of my novels, and hope you will enjoy reading them.

aus dem Buch hätte wirklich ein guter Thriller werden können, auch vom klappentext hatte es mich sehr angesprochen. Aber leider wurde das durch zu viele Gedanken der Personen im Keim erstickt. Es ist kaum Spannung aufgetreten, die Personen waren fast alle super doof und nervig (ausser ein paar wenige) und mit der Geschichte an sich bin ich auch nicht warm geworden. Man sagt zwar weniger ist mehr aber dem Buch hätten 100 Seiten mehr,mit weniger Gedanken und mehr Aktion viel besser getan. Vielleicht gebe ich der Autorin irgendwann nochmal eine Chance, da der schreibstil schon ganz ok war aber das wird wahrscheinlich noch dauern.

This is actually a 255 page novel (excluding author bio, promo for another book, etc). Lief always writes a fast pasted thriller, and this is not an exception. The quick movement, rapid chapters, etc. all contribute to the feel of the novel. That said, it's a very different kind of novel. Neither beginning or end is what you expect.

Inhalt:
Thanksgiving steht bevor und die ganze Familie trifft sich ausnahmsweise bei der einst berühmten Fiona Carson in ihrem Haus, in dem sie nach wie vor wie eine Königin residiert. Eigentlich sollte die ganze Familie sich bei May, ihrer Tochter und ihrer Familie treffen, doch bestimmte Dinge haben May dazu gebracht, die gesamte Planung über den Haufen zu schmeißen und sich ohne ihren Mann Charlie, nur mit ihrer kleinen Tochter Juliana auf den Weg zu ihrer Mutter zu machen. Am nächsten Tag sollte Charlie nachkommen, ebenso wie die große Tochter Stella, die vom College zu Besuch kam.
Dieser Umsturz aller bisherigen Planungen spielt eine gewisse Rolle in dem folgenden Drama, dass sich in der Villa abspielt. Zwei Männer dringen ein und halten die nun anwesenden Frauen und die kleine Juliana als Geisel. Alles scheint sich zuzuspitzen, als sowohl der rückenkranke Charlie, als auch der Freund Stellas dort aufkreuzt. Das Schicksal scheint sich nicht wirklich schlüssig zu sein, wen es aus der Waagschale und ins Verderben wirft.
Meine Meinung:
Spannend, aber nicht nervenzerfetzend
Kate Peppers Bücher... Sie begleiten mich schon etliche Jahre und es ist wirklich schon fast Gewohnheit, dass ich zu ihnen greife, wenn eins erscheint! In den Anfangsjahren war ich auch wirklich restlos begeistert, aber mittlerweile wird sie mir einfach zu „seicht“, es widerspricht einfach dem Aufdruck „Thriller“, was sie schreibt.
Was nicht heißen soll, dass das vorliegende Buch schlecht wäre, aber es ist eben kein Thriller. Es handelt sich vielmehr um einen Krimi. Nur leider wird man völlig fehlgeleitet, denn auch der Klappentext verspricht bei Weitem etwas, was ich für meinen Teil leider nicht zwischen den Buchdeckeln finden konnte.
Spannung, ja, die ist unbestritten vorhanden. Wenn vorne drauf stehen würde „Krimi“, würde es wirklich auch passen, das würde meine Erwartungen auch irgendwie herunterschrauben.
So aber habe ich die ganze Zeit auf einen Effekt gewartet, der sich nicht einstellen wollte. Das Buch ist ja nicht wirklich dick, deswegen liest es sich auch fix runter. Kate Pepper stellt die Figuren gut dar, aber weil ich mir eben etwas anderes erhofft hatte, sind sie mir nicht so nah gewesen, wie sie hätten sein können.
Ich finds schade und kann nur hoffen, dass andere sich hier besser aufgehoben fühlen. Und für mich ist klar, ich werde mich demnächst nicht mehr so vom Klappentext verführen lassen! Doch, was soll ich machen...
Fazit:
Kein Thriller, aber ein gut auf- und ausgebauter Krimi mit schlüssigem Spannungsbogen und gut konstruierte Figuren.

Es ist zwar ein ganz nettes Buch für Zwischendurch und die Idee gefällt mir auch sehr gut, aber leider hat es mir etwas an Spannung gefehlt. Die Handlung war mir persönlich etwas zu geradlinig, auch wenn es zwischendurch immer mal wieder Passagen mit Wendungen gab, die aber irgendwie für mein Empfinden kaum ins Gewicht fielen. Ganz anders der Schluss: Der war einfach nur schockierend und absolut nicht vorhersehbar! Was ich wiederum aber sehr gut fand, war, dass man aus der Sicht von jedem Charakter die Handlung erzählt bekam, sie wechselten sich quasi immer ab und so konnte man gut nachempfinden, wie die einzelnen Personen sich gerade fühlten und was in ihnen vorging.

Decent book. There are times in this book where the author gets too overdramatic for my tastes and I found myself skimming through paragraphs at times. It seems like the author is trying to keep a balance between the action and the exposition, but at times, there's just too much of the latter for me and I can't believe so many pages have gone by with nothing happening. Still a good book, though. 3 stars.

Von mir bekommt dieser Thriller leider nur 2 Sterne. Eigentlich habe ich mir einen kurzen spannenden Thriller für Zwischendurch erwartet, aber leider wurden am Ende sogar die nur 220 Seiten zu lang... Die Idee für die Geschichte war gut, aber die Umsetzung war nur lahm. Totaler Durschnitt ohne wirkliche Spannung, besonders am Ende. Und die Charaktere waren teilweise so unsympathisch und haben mich mit ihrem Verhalten nur genervt... schade!

I was extremely disappointed with the ending of this book!!!! It left me with more questions than answers and it seemed totally out of sync with the story. The start of the book was interesting and I was drawn to the characters in the story and that is why the ending threw me. It may appeal to others but it really wasn't a book I would recommend.

Once again, a quick, suspenseful read!
If you like TV shows like Criminal Minds, you will like this author. She writes with a LOT of detail that I sometimes think is unnecessary but it really places you in the scene. This story takes place around Thanksgiving and will make you grateful that your family holiday drama is not at all like this story. HAHA!

Riveting psychological thriller, in which a psychopath and his protege invade the home of a famous writer and her family on Thanksgiving. I couldn't stop reading this last night until I found out how it ended! This is the second of this author's books I've read, and I'll definitely read more.

This is the 5 th Katia Lief book I have read and this does not dissapoint. Katia Lief keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat with numerous twists in the plot.
Her characters are well developed and you either love or hate them.

I liked this book. It was a very intense read that kept you into the story. The ending was what I didn't like. You are excited that they got to the point they did and felt that everyone would be ok. But then an errant shot that didn't need to be shot, ends one of their lives.

I absolutely LOVED this book and how she viewed the situation through everyone's eyes. It really makes you connect with each character. This was the first novel I had ever read from Katia Lief and it's the one that got me hooked to her work. I 100% recommend this book.

An exciting story of suspense and intrigue as two robbers attempt to rob a home which they believe has been vacated for the holiday, but find themselves with very resourceful people who thwart their plans.
