This best-selling children’s book is already a favourite of people young and old around the globe and its lyrics have been sung in classrooms and assemblies across the country. The book’s endearing use of iconic Canadianisms provides a great tool for young readers developing memory recognition and learning to count. Its comical ending, with all the characters in the tree, provides a captivating look-and-find.
The meter is off. The book seems to be picking random Canadian content and isn't really respecting Indigenous things like totem poles properly. The illustrations don't hit for me either. But the Canadian content is real.
I received a signed copy of this as a win from First Reads on GoodReads.
When I first got it in the mail I flipped through fairly quickly, smiling at the art and the Canadian items that were given and I thought it was very cute. The book quickly made it's way to other family members that day and it was amusing to listen to people reading it out loud. Everyone tends to end up singing about halfway through the book--you just can't resist. My 2 year old niece demanded it be read to her multiple times.
Then my 7 year old son took the book to school for show and tell. The teacher read it to the class at reading time, and all the kids loved it. My son was thrilled that people were so impressed with the book, and the teacher seemed quite happy to have had the chance to read it as well.
While the level and the pictures are definitely intended for children, I think the book is suitable for all ages. It's a cute and funny take on the old Christmas carol, and it had a wonderful Canadian spin to it. This is already becoming a favourite book in this house.
A Moose in a Maple Tree by Troy Townsin is an alternative version of the 12 days of Christmas. Instead of birds Mr. Townsin uses Canadian traditions and animals.
I have to say this is a really cute book. I read it to my 7 year old today as soon as I received it and he really enjoyed it. The illustration was also really nice, though I felt something was missing. I would have liked to see more detail in the background part of the picture.
Thank you so much for giving me a chance to read this book. I would recommend it to others as an alternative book for Christmas.
I recently received a copy of A Moose In A Maple Tree, The All-Canadian 12 days of Christmas, by Troy Townsin and illustrated by Jennifer Harrington, for winning a drawing on Goodreads. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this original rewriting of the Twelve Days of Christmas. The writing is witty and the illustrations are fun and show off the beauty that is Canada. If you are looking for a new waya to enjoy the Twelve Days of Christmas, I can readily recommend Troy Townsin's A moose In A Maple Tree.
