I only read half of this book so far in the original French version, but it is nicely written. The small details make it a funny book; they demonstrate the very slow progress of civilization that took place during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
....
Later edit: I finished it today. The funny tones are counterbalanced in the last part of the book by the descriptions of hospitals (truly penitentiary institutions), of the hunger, epidemics and subsequent rebelions that plagued the last years of Louis XIV's reign.
Having a particular interest in the Salpetriere, I was glad to encounter the mentions to it and a succint story of how the hospital system came about. As I said at first too, the book is well worth reading :)
