Meet Nikki Duncan, Author of Small-Town Romance and Second Chance Love
Looking for emotional healing romance with strong female leads and second chance love stories? Nikki Duncan writes small-town romance novels and romantic women’s fiction about healing that go deeper than the surface. Her books explore the kind of love that repairs what’s broken, fuels self-discovery, and lingers long after the last page.
Nikki’s journey started in secret, writing her first story while devouring Harlequins. That quiet beginning led to a career of more than twenty novels and a fan-favorite debut, Sounds to Die By. The book began as a challenge to create a blind hero without drowning him in angst. It became a contemporary romance series readers still return to.
Over the years, Nikki’s work has appeared alongside romance icons like Shayla Black, Jaci Burton, Sylvia Day, and Cathryn Fox. Her stories blend emotion, resilience, and unexpected twists. Whether it’s laughter or heartbreak, Nikki’s characters push through life’s messes and find connection on the other side.
Off the page, she’s touched nearly every part of the book world. She’s designed covers, built websites, written for romance magazines, and hosted reader parties. One even featured a surprise cameo by EL James. After years of creative burnout, Nikki took a step back to care for her family and rekindle her spark.
Now, she writes from her restored farmhouse in Texas Horse Country. Her home, once dubbed “Dump to Dream,” inspires the kind of hope she weaves into every book. Whether it’s a reclusive star in Healing His Heart or a grieving sister in Her Twelve Miracles of Christmas, Nikki’s stories are layered with meaning.
When she’s not writing, she’s sipping tea, reworking her website (again), or dreaming up the next love story that just might change a life.
Somewhere between 3 and 3-1/2 stars. It was an enjoyable story, but maybe I just didn't quite "feel" the relationship between Lori and Trevor so much. I get that they had history, and I saw Trevor trying really hard to get back with Lori, but her resisting strongly. And while I kinda saw why she was resisting, I'm not sure I really understood all of her reasons. I'm not sure why she couldn't figure out who Lori was without Whitehall while being part of Lori-and-Trevor. I did find it funny that Trevor basically had her planning her own wedding, with Lori thinking Trevor was going to marry someone else, lol. Alas, there was no wedding. Maybe in a future story, since there are several in this series.
I really had hoped to like this book, but instead, I found it to be a rip off of Nora Roberts' Bride Quartet series. It also was exceedingly short, and there wasn't much background given on Lori's job with the private security firm. We are left with more questions than answers on that score and a number of others, like why the hero wound up in a coma. It just didn't make any sense and then the book ended very abruptly! All this buildup about her marrying him and we don't even know if it happens or not! I have a feeling that this particular plot point would be played out over the next several books, but I have no interest in continuing the series in order to find out. At least I learned the lesson with just this book, rather than having spent the money on the entire series!
The past can come back to haunt a former call girl. What can be more tortuous than having to plan the wedding of the man she loves when he's marrying someone else and she can’t explain to him about her past?
Lori Mullins sets up shop to be a wedding planner, makes a business proposal to former client (who she had many passionate moments with) for funding and winds up planning his wedding. Lori is constantly trying to keep herself busy so she won’t think about the past in which the man she loves almost got killed due to her previous profession. Lori has a secret she must keep because her past was not all it seemed to be. She dreads the upcoming meeting with his fiancée since she's heartbroken he's marrying someone else.
Trevor Masters is a successful businessman who has the means to provide funding for Lori’s new venture. He was almost killed when he was involved with Lori, unwittingly becoming a pawn for Lori’s former boss. Trevor seems to still be taken with Lori, yet he's engaged to be married to someone else.
The story is very focused on the turmoil Lori goes through with trying to keep her past concealed and keeping herself out of Trevor’s reach. She keeps reminding herself that her secret almost got Trevor killed and she has to let him go. Trevor keeps up his pursuit of Lori and provides a surprising twist to the story. I loved the premise and the twist in the story even though I kind of saw it coming.
For an erotic story, this is a bit on the conservative side, not that it’s a bad thing. It’s a great story for those who usually read regular romance stories and are venturing into the erotic side. More action details in Lori’s flashbacks would have helped break up the stretches of reflecting and worrying on her part. Having Trevor be more present in the story might also have helped with getting to know him better and to break up Lori’s contemplation. Overall, this was still an enjoyable read.
I wonder now if Ms. Duncan will be writing a sequel with Lori’s best friend Misty as the heroine? If you are looking for a well written sexy short story about lovers with secrets from their past, be sure to look for Tangled in Tulle.
Tangled in Tulle by Nikki Duncan First book in the wedding series, wedding planners combine their talents for the perfect day. Lori Mullins is just starting up the wedding and design company and she goes to Trevor for a loan. She's tried many other banks and has gotten turned down. Her friend Misty knows she can get the loan. Problem is Trevor Masters turns her down but gives her an alternative suggestion: he gets a portion of the company, takes an interest in the companies that get hired and after she agrees, his wedding is the first one to be planned. Erotic hot sex scenes and while away from the building they learn a lot more about each others past. They do have a past together, one that she left him in a coma. He didn't see it as such. She misunderstands and thinks she's planning Randy, the maintenance woman in charge of renovations, her wedding to Trevor. He tries to help her get over her past and pain as she lets him in on the secrets. I received this from the author and will post my honest reviews.
Didn't think much of this book. Read in a couple of hours. Nothing too amazing. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I'm sure I didn't find it. Summary: An ex-call girl ends up getting back with one of her clients. Apparently their relationship was more intimate than what her profession called for although she was actually an undercover detective. Their chemistry is good. That's about it. Not much going on here.
I enjoyed this book but felt like there should have been a prequel to the story. There was so much back story, which sounded interesting & suspenseful & I would have loved to go into more detail about it and know exactly what happened.
Also, the book ended rather abruptly. At 86%, on my Kindle, I was expecting that there would be more to the story.
First in a new series, but with so much back story that it feels like it should be a follow-on from a previous series. I like the premise, though, and shall be interested to see where the series goes and how much it concentrates on the other couples while advancing the story of this pair.
Abrupt ending. Development was strange, kind of fragmented. The book could have been longer to better explain the issues between the characters. I still liked it though.
