The end of the world really sucks.

I knew it wasn’t going to be fun—no one ever associates the endtimes with good times—but I figured I’d at least be somewhere safe when the meteors hit. Or dead. Not trapped in my office building with a gun nut, a former Boy Scout, and a golden retriever. Yeah, yeah, spare me your chuckles; I can’t help that we’re a perfect little post-apocalyptic family unit. But seriously, how are we supposed to deal with Armageddon if we can’t deal with each other?

We’re stuck, you see. The meteors wiped out a heck of a lot of infrastructure, and rescue is slow in coming. And did I mention the dead are waking up and shuffling around?

Oh, yeah. The dead. They keep coming after us, and there’s more every day. I think they’re hungry.

Very hungry...

The story has a good concept behind it. It is very shallow. The characters and situations are not explained in much depth at all. I think that the story has promise but as I think on it after reading I have so many unanswered questions. The survivors went to the store to get food. Ok, what kind of food, what did you find and what did you take? Then the survivors got bullets. Ok, bullets, was it for the guns? Just no detail at all. I recognize that the apocalypse is told from the perspective of a woman but I am sure that there are deeper thoughts in there. Not really interested in reading the follow up.

I have been reading lots of Apocolypse fiction recently and this book is among the best because it did not follow the normal rules of the genre. The reasons I enjoyed it so much are:

1. There was no gun porn. There were no paragraphs going on about what gun the characters were using and the relative benefits of such a weapon. Most of the time doing that is just boring.

2. The heros were not stereotypical survival heros. Nothing about having being trained in martial-arts or ex-military or some other macho man stereotypes

3. It was fun.

I like things short so I picked this up. I was in a violent mood due to some idiot on Google+ berating me with this stupidity and so a zombie story sounded appealing. I picked this up as a sample since I did not know the author and the author appeared to be relatively new...I like to test the water with my toe before jumping in.

The sample was decent and the writing well enough so I took the plunge and purchased the story at just $.99 even if it ended up being terrible, I wouldn't be out too much. Grave New World's author, S.P. Blackmore, has some decent writing skills and the main character in this story is a female, so we get the usual zombiepocalypse from a bit of a different angle than we are used to seeing. Additionally, the female lead is witty and a bit of a sarcastic smartass which makes the reading of this short tale fun and interesting.

Here we get the usual of society has fallen apart, this time due to a massive meteor shower that has struck numerous places, creating a world covering ash cloud and devastating heat wave. As time goes on, strange things start happening and soon we discover the dead are walking.

The story is about 100 pages long, perhaps a little less and went smoothly and quickly. The story zips along and Blackmore does a good job making the usual zombie clichés feel newish and fresh, including some new ideas such as the missing zombie eyes. If you like zombie tales, and are looking for an interesting short read that looks like it could turn into a serial with the next book due out sometime in 2012, then I would recommend this tale to you.

One of the reasons I liked this little novella was that the author included a dog, but didn't kill the dog or abandon the dog. Authors will often include a dog in a story just, I think, so they can kill it off later; thus, getting you all attached to the dog, worrying what's going to happen to the dog, then making you supersad when the zombies eat the dog or it has to be left behind.
I also like the tone of the story, the main character, and her lack of fully trusting the other two guys she was with...she *had* to trust them to a certain extent, but like a normal person, some sensible suspicious snuck in at times.
Anyway, I enjoyed it, I recommend it to those who enjoy Post Apocalyptic or Zombie fiction.
I don't know if I'll be reading the next one or not. I haven't decided yet. If it were $.99 on Amazon, then yes, probably.

As the first book of a series, the author does a good job introducing the core characters. You have all the standards of a zombie tale - shuffling undead, not the runners of 28 Days Later - in a story that wraps up at the point where most books would just be hitting the mid-point. Perhaps that was intention... to goad us into buying the next installment?
I definitely recommend Grave New World to those who enjoy a good zombie story...especially one that you can whip through in one sitting.

There are so many good new indy authors and S.P. Blackmore just made my list of ones to watch out for. It took a little while to like the characters in this book, but the writing was a pretty fresh take on my favorite subject- post apocolyptic survivalism. Namely, zombies. Now that I care what happens to these characters I am looking out for the sequel to this easy read.

How many people are in the place they want to be when the world ends? The zombie outbreak didn`t happen slow. It happens with a big bang and lots of fire, so Vibeke is stuck in a building with two other people. Oh, and there are zombies outside. Not an ideal situation. This is a really fun story. They do eventually find other people, but it turns out, other people suck.

I thought this book was a really good read. I enjoyed reading it. It was like a zombie jamboree in my brain.
