Terry Saltz is doing a decent job of getting his life back together. He's got an awesome double-wide trailer, and a sweet carpentry business in the making. But trouble seems to follow him everywhere-like that woman in the bar pool league who turned up dead. Must be time to solve another murder.
EARLY 8: A Working Man’s Mystery (Amateur Sleuth/Carpenter-Ohio-Cont) -G+ L.T. Fawkes – 3rd in series Signet Mystery, 2004- Paperback Carpenter Terry Saltz once again become involved in crime solving when find one of the women in a competing pool league, murdered in her car. *** Slightly edgier, which I liked, than the previous two entries, Terry and his friends are blue collar, realistically written and fun to be among. L.T. Fawkes, actually Margo Dorkson, writes very good descriptions and dialogue. This is a well-done series and a great way to spend a day.
If you're looking for a light read for the sake of good old fashioned fun, this is a nice one to pick up. Fawkes' has wit and style to spare, and her ability to render the unique voices of her characters is excellent. I laughed out loud in several places, and there are, in moments, bits of character development I'd even call spectacular.
I'm not much of a mystery fan, all in all, but I found this one nothing but fun.
I can't believe this one is done... no new book since 2004. I really enjoyed the series and I felt the male perspective was fresh. I'll miss Terry Saltz and his motley group of friends/investigators. LOL
This book wasn't that great of a read. It didn't keep my on the edge like mystery books should. I actually felt that the book became a little boring because Fawkes seemed to have made it a priority to describe details rather than focus on creating suspense for the readers. The one thing that I did enjoy about this story was the plot. I never suspected that the _____ would be the murderer. I guess in a way, that made me a little interested in finishing this story.
Early Eight is a good amateur sleuth novel, with a group of fairly young blue collar guys doing the work Mrs. Marple used to do, providing a new perspective.
Real characters that you can connect with, well developed plot and humor. I am sad that this seems to be the last in the" Working Man's Mystery" series. I want to read more.
