My daughter is 5 and loves the Barbie Movies. This is one of the first Barbie books we have read together. The other day we were out at the book store together and she picked this as one of the two books she wanted to get and read. This book is from the latest Barbie movie. It was a fun story and my daughter who is in Sr. Kindergarten was able to read a number of the words herself. The leveled readers are great for children working on developing their reading skills. And because of her love of the character and the movies, this book keeps my daughter's attention longer than most for working on her sight words. It was a wonderful story to read together and I have no doubt we will be reading many more Barbie books soon.
This book is designed for those who need some help when reading on their own. As such it does serve that purpose. It can also easily be read and enjoyed by an adult. The story is not really based on either of the Barbie mermaid movies but does borrow elements from them. This is a straight adventure story, with no hint of romance whatsoever. Heck, Ken isn't even in this story. If you have a youngster who likes an adventure story which stars a female in the lead role then I daresay they will likely enjoy this one. Happy reading.
My 5 year old was enchanted by the drawings of glamorous mermaids, but the long names were hard for her to read, and the story was nearly impossible to follow. The villain shows up out of nowhere and the magic didn't make any sense. I think this book is better if your kid has seen this movie it's based on.
This is another book that came home from the library with us this week. It is a Step into Reading leveled reader from A Mermaid Tale 2, where Barbie is actually playing the role of the mermaid Merliah. There's a girl that is jealous of Merliah. She steals Merliah's necklace, get trapped by a bad guy and gets saved by Merliah.
We have not watched the Barbie movie, and this affected our enjoyment of the book. The children all agreed that this story just did not make much sense. Also, this book is leveled for preschool-1st grade and my 1st grader and my kindergartener could not handle this book because so many of the words in this book were huge. There are lots of words such as beautiful, jealous, and protecting that are just beyond their abilities. Also, these names were hard for me to guess at, much less have my 5 or 6 year old read. They both found reading it themselves exceedingly frustrating, but when I read it to them, they thought it was boring and that it didn't make much sense.
First off, I realize this isn't fine literature nor is it meant to be. I understand girls love Barbie and Barbie books that is just fine with me...but what is up with the names? I doubt I pronounced Merliah, or Calissa or Eris correctly....put maybe girls who have seen the movie will know how to say it but I tripped over my tongue several times. How can a kid read the book if the names are HARD for adults?...okay rant over!
