After reviewing several books, I pulled this book out because the cover was very inviting. Upon further inspection, I realized that it is a book about 6 different religions, based on how they incorporate food and their faiths. It is a basic introduction, for individuals like myself, who may not know much about other faiths. It starts with the Christian religion, which is familiar to me, however, a lot of things that the little girl Francesca talks about I was not familiar with. Each religion is represented by a child; Jacob is Jewish, Aneesa is Muslim, Francis is Buddhist, Akhil is Hindu, and Tavleen is Sikh.
This is a beautiful book filled with color and positive aspects of every religion. I was raised Christian and still hold strong to a lot of my beliefs, but I also feel that being spiritual is a big part of my belief system as well. This book really honors the spirit of religions all over the world, in every part, the kids talk about how they celebrate various festivals, eat food, love their families and how it brings them together with others. Most of all, it celebrates the belief in something and viewing it as positive and I think that is a very important thing to have in life.
This is a very simple, informative and colorful slice of culture and religion. I knew very little about the connection between food and faith before reading this and have always been overwhelmed by the explanations from others. This book made it fun and easy for me. I am ready and curious to read more!
