I love books. Not just a little bit, but a lot. Books were my best friends when I was growing up. Books didn’t care if I was new to a town or to a class. They were always there, my trustiest of companions. Until they turned on me and said I had to write them.

I can tell you that my own personal happily ever after included writing books. I’ve always said that an HEA is a work in progress. It’s true in my marriage, my friendships, and in my career. I am constantly nurturing my muse as we dive into new tales, new tropes, new characters and more.

After seventeen years back in Texas, we relocated to the Pacific Northwest in search of seasons, new experiences, and new geography. I can’t wait to discover what life (and my muse) have in store for me.

Maybe writing was always my destiny and romance my fate. After all, my grandmother wasn’t a fan of picture books and used to read me her Harlequin Romance novels.

Friends to lovers, enemies to lovers, friends to enemies to lovers, you name it, I love them and love to write them. I started with Earth Witches Aren’t Easy, the first in the Chance Monroe trilogy, but my characters and I have traveled a long way since I created that urban fantasy world.

One of the series I hear my readers recommend the most is the Untouchable series followed in quick succession by the Vandals, and that just delights me. No lie, whenever one of my readers brings up my wolves, I do a little a fist pump.

I’m active on social media, and I love hearing from readers. Feel free to tag me with a question about any of my books, or just say hi!

Sounded amazing and was a good opener to a supernatural series set in the wild west but I found myself more captivated by the many other secondary characters than the actual main couple.

It felt way too insta-love on the h’s part and the H was a bit too bland. The whole unrequited love thing going on between Scarlett and Scarlett’s “brother” and his wolf was both messed up (they grew up as siblings and his inner wolf sees her as their mate) and sad. There was more interaction between Scarlett and her brother than there was with her and the H.

The super powers and the mysterious fever were pretty cool but not enough to hook me.

This one is also 100% safe. There is some OM drama but its minor.

A while back, I read the second book in this series and I had plans to come back and get the rest. Finally, I did and the second wasn't a one fluke wonder because Sam and Scarlett's story was as good as the other.

I loved the blend of historical western and paranormal romance. There was a gritty aspect to it, but it didn't go too far toward the violent path. The situation of Sam being a marshal and Scarlett being caught red-handed in a robbery made for an interesting conflict of interest.

The surrounding cast of their families was a huge draw. Definitely want more of those stories and glad to see that the series will include them.

The action came and went and provided some good excitement.

The romance was slow-burn yet full of tension and passion. Loved that.

All in all, this was great and I can definitely recommend it and the series.

When I started reading Heather Long's "Marshal of Hel Dorado" I thought it was a straight up Western Romance maybe with twist or two included. I am happy to report that due to the exciting storyline and paranormal elements, I could not put this book down until I reached the very last page!

Sam Kane is a member of the founding family of Dorado, Texas and the town Marshal. Dorado is a quiet town with few, if any, problems or rowdiness, which is exactly what Sam likes.

Scarlet Morning Star just wants a little adventure so she tags along with her brothers, who have recently become bank robbers. Unfortunately, they attempt to rob the bank in Sam's town but in the process have to leave their little sister behind after being discovered by Marshal Kane. Due to a recent gold shipment, the Marshal had been keeping extra watch over the bank after reports of a bank-robbing gang filtered into town. The big question on Sam's mind, other than what to do with the flame-haired beauty, is how in the world could the robbers get past him into and out of his bank so silently and stealthy!

The excitement begins once the Marshal has Scarlet in his jail with the townspeople getting whipped into a frenzy by some real town troublemakers over the loss of the gold in the town bank. They all want someone to pay for the bank robbery and Scarlet is their target since she was the only one captured. Sam has to think quickly to avert an 'on the spot' hanging and takes Scarlet to his family's home ranch 20 miles out of town for her safety. What Sam does not know at first but discovers little by little, is that Scarlet, her bank-robbing brothers, and Father are all very special people with gifts including fire-starting, shape-shifting, healing, dream-walking, etc.

I very much enjoyed the story of Sam, his little "Minx" Scarlet the fire-starter and all of the brothers on both sides. The plight of the Indians losing their lands to the government added another element of interest for me.

This is the first book from Heather Long I have read and I am very pleased to report that I will be reading more of her and this new Fevered Hearts series! I'm normally not a western genre reader so it took me a bit to get into the book and the old west feel, but once I got into the first chapter I was in and saddling up for the long haul.

As with any book there has to be some kind of twist and turn in it to keep it moving, but the turns and twists in this one were not expected at all. It starts out as a normal western and quickly turns into something else... a paranormal western.

Marshall Sam Kane is on the lookout for bank robbers when he finds Scarlett Morning Star standing in the middle of the closed bank that has just been robbed. What has happened? How could she pull this off?—and—Who is she? Sam takes her into custody and quickly realizes that her safety is at risk. Without any other options, he takes her home.

Scarlett might look like a sweet little thing but she has a secret that can't get out. If it does, it could cost her and her family their lives… or worse. She has another problem now after meeting Sam, she wants to stay and experience the things she has longed for but knows if she stays she puts him and his family in danger as well. She must do what she knows is right to protect everyone.

This new series has so many great characters starring Scarlett's 7 brothers—each very unique in their own way. I'm especially curious about Wyatt. Then there's Sam's brothers, who are funny and charming. I love the family drama and friendship between them all-it makes for a wonderful feel and great read. I really look forward the the next book in the Fevered Hearts series that will feature Kid and Cody, coming out in Spring 2012.

So if your feeling a bit adventurous and want to saddle up for ride into a paranormal, this is my recommendation for you. Happy Reading - xoxo

A true old fashioned love story set in the old west. With a few twists and turns, this story has shapeshifters and magic to spare.
Marshal Kane catches Scarlett as she is exciting an empty bank vault. Except there was only one way in and one way out and since the Marshal was standing at the front door how did Scarlett and her gang enter and exit?
Scarlett while being a co-operative prisioner is all too happy to go with the sheriff, giving only the minimalist of information to the man. Deciding that Scarlett would not be safe in the town jail he takes her to his family compound on the outskirts of town.
Scarlett despite her growing feelings for the Marshal knows she must escape before her gang which happens to be her brothers come looking for her.
The Kane Family compound is surrounded with men. Marshal Sam Kane has brothers and his widowed father runs a strong, tight house. Accordingly all the men are smitten with Scarlett, her flowing red hair, her manners and her ability to sooth the savage beast as it were. The Marshal was “taken” with Scarlett the moment he captured her in the bank.
Scarlett does escape temporarily. She knows her brothers have sensed where she is and who she is with.
While away from Marshal Kane, Scarlett realizes she misses him. As much as she wants to get back to her family, she fears she may like Sam more than she wants to admit to herself.
When Sam finally does find Scarlett he is surrounded by her brothers, all of which have magical powers. One is a healer, one is a shape shifter and Scarlett is a fire starter. Sam Kane only knows one thing that he loves and wants Scarlett in his life, fire starter or not and sets out to clear her name and win her heart for good.

I normally do not read western genre. But I must say this one was not what I was expecting. I like how there is a little twist of paranormal with romance. It was quite good. No sex sense till almost the very end, I was hoping for it to happen sooner. But it was still good.

I don't know what I was expecting when I picked up this book. I figured a historical western romance. Boy was I wrong and in a very good way!
Heather Long has incorporated the old west with her own unique flare. In this first book of the series we meet the players from the very beginning. By that I mean the original onset of the fever and how those survivors came to be. The interesting fact here is that each of these survivors has a gift or a curse depending on your point of view.

A gang has been robbing banks of gold, gold belonging to the US Army. Marshal Sam Kane is watching the bank from the shadows, his brother, the one they call Kid, is in Sam's usual spot relaxing as Sam would. This gang would not get away with his town's gold.

Nothing more than a couple of flashes inside the bank gives away that someone is in the bank. Now the fun begins, as Sam takes into custody a beautiful red-haired thief while the rest of the gang escapes with the gold.

Sam however decides she is better off at the family ranch for her protection.

This couple have much to overcome, not the least of which is her ability. Although the robbery and the threat of hanging are right up there too. Several very interesting conflicts occur between Sam's brothers and Scarlett's.

A page turning read that so engrossed me I stayed up way past my bedtime and then started the next book in the series.

What do you get when you put the X-Men and Captain Tightpants together? Scarlett Morning Star and Marshal Sam Kane, the hero and heroine of Marshal of Hel Dorado. Seriously, this book surprised the heck out of me. I read it on the first leg of my flight back to San Diego. I even tuned out all the screaming children because I wanted to finish this book before touching down in Vegas. That's how awesomely awesome it was.

Scarlett Morning Star wanted an adventure. She was tired of just sitting up high on the mountain while her brothers got to sow their wild oats all over Texas. Well, she got her adventure. Marshal Sam Kane finds Scarlett in the bank and swears there were others with her. Without the others to arrest, he takes Scarlett in their place. And boy howdy! he's in the for the ride of his life.

Sam puts Scarlett in the jail cell but due to angry townspeople, he takes her to his family's ranch to wait on the judge. The town wants to string her up but Sam wants to give her a fair trial. On the way to his family's ranch, the attraction to this redheaded spitfire gets his pants in a very uncomfortably tight bunch.

With Sam's father and brother Micah taking up her cause and believing her a victim of the robberies rather than an accomplice, Sam's hide is chafed. How the heck did this slip of a woman get his family on her side from the moment she climbs off his horse?

Scarlett knows her brothers will come for her. With seven brothers who all have tempers and special abilities, she knows they'll either burn the town down searching for her or hurt the Kanes who have been nothing but kind with the exception of suspicious Sam. When Sam's youngest brother Kid tells her he will take her to her brothers, she agrees. No need for bloodshed.

But Sam isn't done with her. This minx of a woman has gotten under his skin. Since finding out her ability to shoot fire through her fingertips, he's intrigued and is accepting of the fact she is able to. As Sam puts two and two together regarding the string of bank robberies and her brother's abilities, he can let Scarlett hang for what her brothers did. All she wanted was an adventure and she got a whole lot more.

After leaving the Marshal behind, Scarlett can't seem to forget about him. Returning to the mountain only makes her sad and her family begins to notice. Her father, Quanto realizes that his little girl has grown up and may need to come down from the mountain to find her happiness.

Sam and Scarlett must come to terms with their feelings for one another while fighting bad guys, returning the gold her brothers stole, finding something to ground her powers and making their families accept their attraction for each other.

FAVORITE QUOTE:
"His heart seized in his chest, his first thought was to rescue her from the flaming water. His second, even more startling, was to wonder how she created such a feat.
The man who walked through walls.
The gold stolen from a sealed vault.
The wolf in town.
Her fever, the rage of this struck, so swift. Her skin had literally burned his fingertips. Rolling his thumb over the fading blister on his right forefinger, Sam found himself at a complete loss." (***quote subject to change in finished copy***)

OVERALL: If you love westerns AND the supernatural, you'll want to pick up this book. Take one sexy Marshal who I have dubbed Captain Tightpants 2.0, a fiery redhead who can conjure flames and shoot them out of her fingertips, 7 brothers with supernatural abilities including walking through walls and shifting into a wolf, a Professor X-like father who dream walks and a shootout reminiscent of old westerns and you've got a formula for a must read series. You'll laugh out loud, sigh, squee, ponder, shout obscenities (in a good way) and want to scream at Scarlett and Sam: "do it already!" As with any first book in a series, Heather Long has introduced memorable characters that I want to know more about and did a fantastic job in building a world where the every day and the things that go bump in the night collide. I look forward to learning more about the brothers and finding out the women who will tame them. Well done Ms. Long, well done.

1850. Sam is the marshal of Dorado, and one of the Kane brothers, he’s in charge of keeping the peace. When the vault of his town is broken into and gold stolen he find only the redheaded vixen is his hands. While the others run away with the gold, some of the town people want the girl stringed up and hanged. Taking the girl, Scarlett, to the Kane family ranch for safe keeping until she can be judged doesn’t work the way Sam would like. Riding to the ranch with her awakes desires he thought he’d already gotten out of his system, but she’s different, not to mention beautiful, strong and curvy as hell.

Scarlett and her brothers are different, marked with unearthly abilities, so when Scarlett is captured the gloves come off and it bodes ill for the small town of Dorado. Scarlett and Sam butt heads but their attraction is undeniable, so what does Scarlett truly want? Her freedom, her brothers or perhaps something that only Sam, her warden, can give her?

A sexy western where the rules of physic don’t apply!

Set in the old west where men are men and women are in a less favorable position comes a romance with a paranormal twist, werewolves, fire starters, psychics and cowboys how can you ask for more? Well you don’t, because this books great!

You easily slip into the roll of the story, and find it hard to stop reading, especially when things spice up with Scarlett and Sam. With thread approaching Horado in the aftermath of Scarlett's capture it’s up to the Kane family to protect it, and the Kane brothers are nothing if not honorable.

I loved Sam, loved his struggle to set his emotions about Scarlett right, he tries so hard to be rude and indifferent but his walls keep cracking showing he wants so much more from her. Scarlett is a great heroine, strong willed during the time of timid women, and not to mention powerful if she could control her power. The Kane brothers were such a pleasure to read, they are though, playful in the hot brotherly way.

I truly liked this story, it had that western feel to it with sexy cowboys and one hot marshal and great supporting cast of brothers on both sides of the couple! This is definitely one of my favorite western romances I’ve read in ages!

If you like your men little rough around the edges, honest and handsome - with handsome brothers! - and your stories with a paranormal twist then this book is for you! Don’t miss these men of the old west!

This is an original review from http://bookedandloaded.com - I personally purchased this book.

Marshal of Hel Dorado is Heather Long's first book in her Fevered Hearts series. I truly devoured this story. Long pulled me into the cowboy world of Marshal Samuel Kane and his family. It scuked me into the past with such brilliant clarity, I could smell the horse sweat and hay. *sigh* It was a beautiful ride.

Marshal of Hel Dorado made me warm and fuzzy all over. With SO many great characters and a plot that is original and amazing - there wasn't anything I didn't like about Marshal of Hel Dorado. Typically cowboy reads are not my forte, but Long's story telling painted vivid images through her writing that will be forever unforgettable. The old southern charm is alive and well and worked its magic on this reader. *fans self*

With a ribbon of paranormal woven through it, Marshal of Hel Dorado will satisfy any paranormal romance fan. Refreshing and brilliant, I will be quick to pick up the next book in this series. I should make a special rating for "kindle in the bathtub good'. Seriously, VERY few books are worth bringing my kindle close to the risk of certain death by bath salts and bubbles. Well, bitches this book was that good...that is right. I took the Marshal into the bath with me!! ;)

Writing about horses is NOT something authors should take lightly. I am fully confident in saying that this author knows horses. Any horse fanatic would be comfortable in reading this story as it is very accurate. Sometimes it is hard to recomend book to my horse loving friends when horses are part of the story. They would all be pleasantly pleased with Marshal of Hel Dorado!

Currently Marshal of Hel Dorado is $.99 on Amazon (buy HERE) it might be the best dollar I have ever spent.

I rate Marshal of Hel Dorado 5 out of 5 Bullets!

When ruggedly handsome Marshal Sam Kane discovers Scarlett Morning Star and her brothers robbing his bank you quickly realize this is not going to be your typical western romance. Ms. Long weaves paranormal elements into the Wild West so gracefully that shape shifting, fire-starting and psychic ability naturally blend into the rough and tumble town of Hel Dorado.

Sam Kane and his brothers are quintessential cowboys; every bit the alpha-male with a swagger and strength that define the Marlboro man. But don’t write off Scarlett and her band of brothers who are equally strong and defiant. The firestorm between Sam and Scarlett scorches through the pages. Rivalries ensue among both sets of brothers waging a war to keep and protect family names.

This is the first in a series and I fell in love with the Kane’s and the Morning Star’s. Not since Bonanza has there been such an interesting group of brothers (on each side). Sam and Scarlett’s tale is so rich that it leaves the reader longing for the next brother’s story. And once you meet them, it’s clear that each has a story waiting to be told.

I highly recommend this book even if western’s aren’t your normal read. WARNING: Bring water. It’s awfully hot out in Hel Dorado.

The Fevered Hearts series' first book rides a mystical barrier between wild west and paranormal fantasy. The polished writing gives a high-level view of the challenges endured in nineteenth century American frontier life: disease, prostitution, banditry, range wars. Quanto's family of magical misfits suffers these toils in hiding, fearful of public reaction to their gifts. When their land is put up for auction, they become outlaws to keep it.

Their supposed adversaries, the dusty, rugged cowboys of the Flying K, reek of horse and gunpowder and will throw a punch at the drop of a Stetson. But you'll find a lot of pulp beneath their ruthless exteriors. They dote on their loyal mares and are refreshingly respective of women. The Marshal is a complex hero, his duty to maintain order at constant odds with his chivalrous need to protect Quanto's lawbreaking daughter.

Edgier romance buffs won't find the heat they prefer in this one: the H/h don't have sex until 95%. But a patient reader, one who enjoys light western romances, will appreciate the mystery, resonance, and quality writing blazing these Dorado trails.

This book is a phenomenon: there is only one real sex scene between hero and heroine, and it's at about 92%...that's something I hate in romance novels. I usually like them to have sex at least when the book is half done. But I loved this book nonetheless!
The characters are wonderful, and I will immediately get the next book in the series...Heather Long seems to share my blond-guy-fetish, the Kane-Brothers are blond, Cody is blond...YAY!
The whole setting is the most authentic Western scenery I ever read- not that I'm an expert, but everything felt so real, nothing was sugarcoated- liked it very much.
The paranormal element is intriguing, I feel very drawn to Scarlett's bunch...they are great, fascinating people, and I hope there are many books to come.
Mrs. Long writes exceedingly beautiful- so beautiful that I forgave her how tame she was with the passion between hero and heroine. But she somehow managed to make this book hot anyway...
I'm a fan, and am sure to read MORE.

Daft me thought this was a contemporary western (that's what I get for just seeing the Authors name and going "buy, buy, buy"! However I really enjoyed this PNR, Extrasensory spin on the wild, wild West!

Sam is the oldest son of a cattle baron and founder of the local town. He follows the rules so when a certain flame haired bank thief manages to get him to twist the rules, he's not quite sure what has come over him.

Scarlet Morning Star was adopted by a Native American when her family and town were decimated by a fever. She survived but now has a certain fiery talent to go with her flaming tresses! Left behind when her brothers robbed the bank of Dorado, she finds herself not too distressed at being held captive by the handsome Sam. His family is treating her like a guest and he makes her very innocent self have some very racy thoughts!

Scarlet and her brothers all have an extra special talent, such as dream walking, shape shifting or healing. But there seems to be a little bit of something extra going on with Sam's youngest brother too! Loved the characters and I cannot wait to get my hands on more in this series!

I enjoyed the read. Interesting characters. It was suppose to be a paranormal. I did not buy it for that purpose. I thought it was just a western until the third chapter. It's really just about a romance between the Marshal Samuel Kane and Scarlett. It's a series about each brother. Everyone in Scarlett's family have "gifts." Love at first sight for the Marshal. It was a fun world win of a romance. Sweet actually. Loved all the brothers and both Sam and Scarlett's dispositions. Both Scarlett's and Sam's. Loved Sam's father. Stubborn patriarch. Weird part for me was the relationship between Cody, his wolf and Scarlett. Ok world building. Beautiful, in fact. The story was a little slow in places. Other than the "gifts," no real PNA feel. It was a sweet story and I do recommend. Could have done with proofing. Had to re-read parts because of missed words.

The Marshal of Hel Dorado is the first in Heather Long’s Fevered Hearts PNR series.

Marshal Samuel Kane intercepts a bank robbery, but while the culprits seem to literally vanish into thin air, their gorgeous accomplice is left behind. Scarlett Morning Star is no criminal, but she will hang for the robbery if Sam can’t get to the bottom of this.

Heather Long’s world building is captivating and intriguing. Sam and Scarlett’s brothers are fierce and at times, hilarious. Scarlett is sheltered in the ways of the world, and Sam has a huge protective streak.

A solid read and a great introduction to the series.

Sam arrested one of the bank robbers and it turned out to be a slip of a girl with firery red hair and temper to match.
She's afraid for her brothers, the town wants to hang her in the morning. Sheriff Sam sneaks her out the back of the jail
And takes her to his family's ranch. Scarlet and her brothers have special powers and she likes the sheriff and his family. She
Knows her brothers will come for her, and she is afraid for the sheriff and his family. What happens is the best western paranormal
Story I've ever read. This is a must read....you will love it and want more as I do. Lol

Don't judge a book by its cover!

This is not my style of book at all. I'm not even sure why I downloaded it but I am glad I did. Very interesting, well written story. I don't lean toward the paranormal stuff so this was a surprise. The story was so well written that I couldn't put it aside even if it wasn't my thing. I might follow the whole series if it stays this good. I will certainly check out this author.

Start of an intriguing paranormal western series. A patchwork family kind of caught robbing a bank, the Marshal lusting over & going to extremes to protect his fiery prisoner.
The family has extraordinary gifts and the Marshal has much to prove before they'll relinquish their sister.
Looking forward to the next adventure.
