Blood sucking leech people? Need I say more?

Sometimes when the real world news is depressing and scary, you find that immersive stories that are silly/wild and scary all at the same time, are a welcome diversion. This is one of those stories!

Imagine a story where there are zombies. Then imagine if that zombie bites you, your bite wound turns into a mouth with teeth. Or if you're bitten more than once, ALL the bites become mouths with teeth. If that's not wild, scary and kind of silly, I don't know what is!

What else can I say? This was a TON O' FUN! If I had to find another author to explain the feel of this story, I would choose Hunter Shea. He can always be counted on for great creature features and this book reminded me of his work. I liked this so much, I pre-ordered his next book about bees. Bring it on!

Highly recommended for fans of creature-features!

*Thank you to the awesome human and great writer, Chris Sorensen, for the eARC in exchange for my honest feedback. This is it!*

3.5 stars. The premise is pretty simple and definitely tried to capture the 80s style horror fad. And in a lot of ways, it did. Aside from the hysterical banter between JD and the other hillbillies, you have a plethora of ravenous sucker creatures and even human/sucker hybrids. Some pretty enjoyable ooey and gooey moments, and plenty of action. So there was a lot to have fun with here. I guess many of my criticisms focus around how it depended too heavily on the aforementioned plot points. There really wasn’t much beyond that. And the ending was satisfactory, but also very predictable, too. While it was enjoyable, the book needed to either be a lot shorter, as to not overstay it’s welcome, or it needed to introduce other variables to keep the story moving upwards. The route that it took was hitting its peak very early, and trying to just coast off of that momentum for the next 90% of the book. So things just became tired after awhile. Not my favorite horror experience, but this was still a solid effort by Chris Sorensen.

HAPPY PUB DAY🥳 to this little meanie, today, May 31 2023!

Thank you BookSirens and the author for an advance digital copy.

This is one of those books in which the primary protagonist, in this case, JD Speers, isn't going anywhere until he runs face-to-ass into a leech-monster-zombie-person who tries to eat him. This proximity to death brings out the more than capable go-getter in JD, and he makes his way through his small town, collecting stragglers, heading for safety. Or so he hopes...

I loved this, bloody disgusting! I don't want to make too much of this, but this monster has got me checking my skin for teeth whenever I have a random mysterious sore spot lol! The monsters are just toothy leeches like you see on the cover and yet they are so much more. These things are vile!

Great character work provides a pile of fun fodder and a collection of motley heroes who can believably jump a van but didn't make me puke, all of which keeps the book moving from start to finish, which is good because the plot is very spare. No slow burn here, this storyline blazes!

Fun, gross, scary, and humorous, this is a good monster romp!

Mutations!

Small backstory:

JD along with his buddy Rowdy and some other friends in his favorite bar are fighting for their lives when something happens out in the woods. Mutant creatures with lots of teeth are attacking everyone in their path and turning those people into hybrid mutations which makes more creatures populate in a very short time.

That is about all I can give on a small backstory without giving away spoilers.

Thoughts:

For some reason and not sure why but as fun as I thought this book was going to be I found the story to not flow fast enough for me. There is lots of blood and gore but the flow of the story felt jilted to me and I found myself bored with the story. I even fell asleep during reading about three times which gives you a clue just how bored I was with it. The story just follows the same horror trope of mutant creatures appear and then start killing everything in sight. The only difference in this book is what the creatures turn the humans into which I won't spoil in this review, but you can get an idea by looking at the cover of this book.

I could not connect myself to the characters either which doesn't help when reading a book as you want to feel some kind of connection to someone but I felt nothing for any of them. So after all that I did like the gore/blood romp which is the reason for two stars - other than that I wasn't impressed very much by this book and it was my first time reading this author too. Though I do own another book by him which I will try out at some point. Giving this book two "Sizzling Sucker" stars!

I love a good creature feature from time to time and Suckerville by Chris Sorensen was a great one! It had horrible creatures causing death and destruction. Check! It had the unsuspecting screwup-turned-hero who finds himself the only one who can save the day. Check! It had gore. Check! It had a storyline with nonstop action that just wouldn't quit! Check, check and check! There was some humor thrown in as well. A friend and I were enjoying a beautiful day reading outside at lunch. She kept looking at me and I realized I was chuckling at the book as I read it.

This is a really quick read if you're looking for some fun adventure in a hillbilly infested, leach-monster infested world! I highly recommend it. I give Suckerville five toothy stars!

This book was just what I needed. It’s the perfect blend of cheesy B-movie drive-in horror and humor that any creature feature fan will adore.

JD is a bit down on his luck after a breakup which was probably 100% his fault (if you ask me). I mean, any guy who declares “I love you more than my truck” might need to work on his sweet talk, lol. Anyhow, his ex took his camper as a parting gift for tolerating him and he wants it back but he’s not exactly the craftiest of thieves. I'll give him credit for trying, I suppose. Naturally, things go awry and a gross set of calamities soon follows. Toss in some little toothy infectious creatures, a few more goofy rednecks, a dog named Dubya and a couple of sexy women who won’t tolerate nonsense and you have yourself a helluva fun story.

I really enjoyed this author’s previous work in The Messy Man series about a haunted house, grief and lots of slow-creeping dread. This story is much different and filled with lighthearted and ridiculous twists and turns, over the top characters and such disgusting imagery. I loved it so much. I hope it’s made into a movie someday.

This book is absolutely bananas and if you need a fun and disgusting romp, this’ll do ya. It never takes itself too seriously and made me laugh quite a few times. It takes a special book to do that because I’ve been feeling very grouchy about SO many things lately.

So go on and take yourself a trip to Suckerville. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

This one was fun.

I liked the creatures which were really a twist on the zombie genre with even more teeth (and as we all know, teeth, teeth, teeth...) and how non-stop balls-to-the-wall the whole thing was. The characters were on the ridiculous side and I liked that.

If you're in the market for a quick read that doesn't take itself too seriously this one would be a good pick.

More of a 4.25 than a true 4.

Oh man, how we the faithful have waited!

For those unfamiliar, Chris Sorensen is the author of the phenomenal The Messy Man trilogy, which opens with the ‘The Nightmare Room’ and never lets up over the following two books. But it’s been three long years for fans of his work as we’ve waited for another release from Chris and now the time is upon up!

Huge thank you to Chris for sending me an eARC of this one, which I dove into almost immediately!

What I liked: Much like the first time you watched Tremors, ‘Suckerville’ will bring you back to that headspace. We follow JD, a world-class fuck up who prefers drinking and fighting to working and responsibilities. He’s bailed out of jail by his good buddy Rowdy and somehow convinces his friend to help him steal his Airstream trailer back from his ex-wife. Unbeknownst to them, something is occurring in the woods near the lake nearby.

It’s from here that Chris rips along and the readers are in for a world of fun and carnage. We get a really great group of characters that have to band together and try to survive as these insane, sucker-covered people try to devour every moving thing in their paths.

Throughout, Sorensen does a masterful job of creating tension and keeping up the high-speed banter between these characters, which worked so well to not only have us rooting for them, but also alleviated some dark moments with some well placed quips and the humor worked really well, considering the people involved.

The ending was a blast and not only wrapped things up, BUT does leave the door open for a potential sequel. That is, if Chris wants to go down that road once again!

What I didn’t like: JD appears to be the only character for the most part that is willing to step up and try to save those when they need saving most. It kind of felt odd, considering this big-drinking, big-talking rednecks often consider themselves the strongest, toughest, meanest SOB’s to walk the planet. So, I was expecting a few times to see a few of the other males have an ounce of courage, but alas, it was not to be. (Actually, in my experience, many of those big-talking rednecks are the first to run and turtle from a fright!)

Why you should buy this: If I wasn’t reading about six other books at the same time, I would’ve easily cruised through this in a single sitting. This was so much fun and I had a smile on my face the entire time. It felt like I was watching an 80’s ninety-minute creature-feature movie like I used to love watching, with a great cast of characters, a hideous, horrendous antagonist and action sequence after action sequence. This may very well be one of the most enjoyable books you’ll read all year and I for one am so excited to see a new Sorensen book for masses to devour!

This is the most fun I've had with a book in a long time. Wonderful characters, disgusting gore and violence and a sense of humour that had me smiling like a loon.

This is a classic creature feature with shades of The Thing, Tremors and Return Of The Living Dead.

I loved the authors Messy Man Trilogy but here I think Sorensen has hit the motherload. Suckerville is frankly RIDICULOUS. It's so brilliantly over the top with the humour landing every single time and the gore so ick you'll be wincing as chests burst and heads pop. The gore is played straight but occasionally with great humour. The inhale/exhale head pop death is genius and actually made me laugh out loud.

Don't be a sucker...read this book.

Part of Chris Sorensen’s marketing for Suckerville is to let reader’s know right off the bat, “Elevated horror this ain’t…” Sure enough, the man knows his target audience and yes, it certainly does include me. Hell, I’ve made a minor contribution to the horror book genre with exactly this kind of schlock myself, even if only as a last and very minor footnote in the annals of horror after all other authors and maybe some who aren’t have been considered.

Suckerville is a far cry from the smart, time-bending ghost stories of The Messy Man books Sorensen made a splash in the indie horror scene with. This one’s a low-brow creature-feature, chock full of mutant leeches and goopy, bloody body horror. It’s populated by alcoholic rednecks, of whom JD Speers, a man who is his own worst enemy, becomes de facto leader of, and a pair of pin-up beauties working to hype up a local brewery’s swill in the least amount of clothing legally allowable their side of the Mississippi.

Absolutely loved this. It's chock-full of cool scenes that felt like a throwback to the horrors of old, but at the same time it's presented in a fun, fresh and unique way. Maybe it's the swift writing, the absurdity, the characters and how they react in these panicky situations, but I was laughing out loud more than a few times. Kept thinking this one would pull anyone out of a reading slump. As a side note, I wasn't in a slump. This just came along at the right time. And not to compare this to Jeff Strand here because the humour feels different, but I'm certain fans of his work will absolutely love this.
Suckerville deserves to do really well.
It's a quick read. I had a blast. I'm sure you will too.

Highly recommended.

4.5 ⭐️’s for Suckerville by Chris Sorensen. This book is a creature feature book from the splatterpunk genre.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for character development. Many of characters downright annoy me because they look to the self-proclaimed biggest loser in the group to lead them to safety while doing nothing to help themselves. IMO being this annoyed by characters is just as fantastic as loving all the characters. There are instances of teamwork between the main characters for survival but ultimately, it is the inability to of characters to fight for themselves that annoys as much as all the 80’s horror flicks with women falling down while running from monsters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The plot/storyline is consistent and entertaining throughout the entire book. I’m not sure I like the ending or not. It is consistent with the 80’s creature features but didn’t quite thrill me. What I do like is the fact that the author leaves the book with an opening for a second book. I am not sure if a duet or series is the plan but it is completely possible.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for grammar/spelling/punctuation/ word choice. The book is well written.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ the scare/disturb factor is perfect for the style of creature feature book. The creatures are gross in appearance and actions. The gross and disturbing body horror when the bitten and sucked transform into the creatures is a gross display of teeth and greasy grimy sucker guts.

Overall, I highly recommend this book if horror/splatterpunk is for you. It is a fun book which takes the reader on a scary but fun ride.

This is an awesomely cheesy creature feature, and would make an equally awesome b-grade movie such as Zombeavers or Bigfoot the Movie from 2015.

Lots of action, lots of gore, some babes and beer, this book has everything you need.

The writing is easy to read, and flows well, the pace of the action is good, and the characters had a surprising amount of depth for a cheesy creature feature.

So If you like the Rewind-or-Die series of books or The Roo by Alan Baxter, or you want a redneck version of the Crabs book by Guy N Smith than this is the book for you.

Chris Sorensen's SUCKERVILLE is something of a cross between a creature feature and a zombie apocalypse. This is my first Chris Sorensen book and I find his style to be very accessible with a mass market appeal. The book is a much a thriller as it is a horror.

The premise of the book is simple enough. There is action from the jump that doesn't ever seem to let up. This is a page turner in every sense of the word. Even if you are a slow-paced reader like myself you should find yourself tearing through this book faster than most. Masterful pacing in this story would make it work as well on the big screen as it does on the page.

Without a doubt, I look forward to reading more of Chris Sorensen's work. I have the equally alluringly titled, BEE TORNADO in the TBR pile already. Don't be a sucker, get sucked in to Suckerville. Move over JAWS, there another reason not to go back in the water.

In the Acknowledgements at the end, the author mentions that an early version of Suckerville wanted to be a screenplay. I wasn't surprised because I'd been thinking throughout that this book would make a brilliant film. Something in the great tradition of those 80s monster films that were as full of irreverent humour as they were of gore. This was a joy to read: a fun, fast creature feature with plenty of bite.

This was one heck of a monstrous story. It’s full of redneck fun, action, and lots of gore.

I personally wasn’t a fan of the characters, so their survival or death didn’t really matter to me.

Man, I'm never gonna think of leeches the same way again!

This creature feature was amazing and packed with high-octane action from start to finish.

In a small town, residents suddenly find themselves prey to a predator they never expected. JD, local screw up, wants to turn his life around, but every scheme he hatches just makes things worse. When he witnesses a surreal gory scene after a car crash, his world spins out of control and he'll have to man up if he wants to survive the night and rescue his fellow citizens.

Not being very familiar with this author, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun this read was.

JD was a fun protagonist to follow along. He's stubborn, impulsive, and not the brightest crayon in the box. It's refreshing given how most stories have protagonists with much better backgrounds. I also really liked all the other characters like Rowdy, Hailey, and Trudy. They all felt real with their interactions and responses, and I'd definitely have a drink with them if I wanted a crazy night.

I'm a sucker for creature features, and I absolutely loved the monsters of the story! There was nonstop action, drama, and epic fails that kept me interested. There were also some good laughs sprinkled in thanks to how campy things were, and it meshed well with the horror. Believe me, it's hard to pull off!

I have zero complaints with this amazing book. If you're a fan of Jeff Strand, Tony Urban, or just like some fast-paced horror with a body count, this book is for you!

Another charmer from Sorensen.

I was recommended this book after I enjoyed Bee Tornado. The moment I read "leech people" in a review, I knew I had to check it out.

Suckerville leans hard into its swampy backwoods setting and characters. I was initially worried the "redneck" stereotypes were mean-spirited, but these characters have real heart. Even in the midst of gory monster attacks, I found myself charmed by the quips and quirks unique to this setting...to the point I was sad when it was over. This one's worth a re-read.

Thank you for the opportunity to read for free - I'm leaving this review of my own accord.

This book took off from page one and never slowed down.

rollercoaster

A fast paced, crazy and hilarious fun time. The action never let's up except for when the people stop to stare in horror at what's happening before their eyes.

This book is on the lighter side of the horror genre. It doesn't take itself too seriously like a lot of horror does nowadays, and seems to be focused more on just having a good time. Sometimes I just need the junk food! Give me action and crazy scenes and I'm happy.

Pure entertainment! Can't wait to read Bee Tornado

This was a fun read. It's not a story that took itself too seriously. Suckerville has the classic 1980s horror, which is a trope I've been falling in love with. Not to mention, blood-sucking leeches, how much more disgusting can it get than that? If you're looking for a slow burn though, this isn't for you. The story starts off fast and only gets more exciting after that.

Overall, a great creature horror read, just the way I love it.

Body-snatching suckers on the move, turning hillbillies into fast food! And worse. Fun, fast and full of bloody action. Wonderful bunch, these quipping knuckleheads. Have you ever seen the movie "Squirm?"
The one where the guy is like, " THERES A WORM IN MY EGG CREAM!"
If yes, did you like it? Did you ever think I wish books could make me feel like this.
If so, I have a book for you.

The writing is great and not as cheesy as you think a monster book that I just compared to Squirm would be. The characters are all different, and you really do like most of them.

This is an all-around fun time! A book that you would be a SUCKER to miss. Pick it up and let Chris take you on a wild beer filled adventure of creatures and mayhem!

Suckerville by Chris Sorensen is a ✨time✨ & I’m happy to say those who read it in the group enjoyed it!

Suckerville is exactly the kind of thing that you’re searching for when scrolling through the b-movies of Tubi. A creature feature at its silliest AND finest. The visuals were wild and the gore scenes were SOLID.

Admittedly, this book is probably not for everyone. But! if you are someone who really enjoys horror filled with silly times, this is definitely a good one to pick up!

Went into this expecting a creature feature, was pleasantly surprised by what I got instead. I really don't want to give any spoilers, but Redneck vs Teeth Zombies by way of The Thing is the best way to summarise this

I had a lot of fun with this book, the characters are great, especially JD, I was rooting for him to succeed the whole time, whereas Chester is a superb foil for JD and I was rooting for him to get eaten the whole time.

Very funny, very gory and a huge amount of fun. Looking forward to Bee Tornado
