For an "absolute beginner" book the first demonstration is quite detailed. Maybe it's accurate for an beginner in watercolor with a background in drawing, but it's a lot to take on for someone like me who's a beginner in both. I've hardly drawn or painted anything since the 6th grade, so that's where my skills are at. It seems like they could have taught the same beginning watercolor concepts with simpler compositions to start and increased detail level along with technique.

Truly great instruction for the beginner

Clear and concise lessons which beginners like me should like. The many step by step examples are very encouraging. Truly a practical and valuable book for beginners to get started on watercolour

This book covered lots of information well. The paint alongside exercises were chosen to show various paintings techniques. However I think it would have been completely overwhelming when I was an absolute beginner - I’d say this book as more for the advanced beginner.

Incredibly dull and dry. If I didn't already know painting was fun from working with acrylics this book would scare me away .

A thorough overview of everything you need to start and continue watercolors. Some of my favorite takeaways:

- Odds Add Interest (odd number of items look more interesting)
- Avoid tangents (point the viewer to intentional points)
- Paint positive and negative spaces (alternatively)
- Paint in 3s; BOF (Paint background, objects then foreground) then MDD (Paint mistimed, darks, then details)

A good overview of materials and techniques, as well as a nice selection of step-by-step exercises to help the reader put the techniques into practice. A good resource for the beginning watercolorist.

Not a bad book for the very beginning painter since it discusses color, drawing, brushes, etc. I did learn a few things and had my memory refreshed on another few, but I guess I am not an 'absolute beginner'.

I read through this pretty quickly but I did one of the exercises. It was pretty straightforward. Personally I just think it is hard to teach painting, and consequently, learn painting from a book
