Nick Sharratt

He grew up in Suffolk, Nottinghamshire and Manchester, with his four siblings. He attended Manchester Polytechnic (now called Manchester Metropolitan University) where he completed an art foundation course. He was trained in graphic design at St. Martin's School of Art and took his later inspiration from the pop and graphic art of the 1960s, which he experienced as a child.
He lives in Brighton, England.

I think this is one of the funniest books I remember reading as a child. I can remember sitting on the carpet area with my friends giggling at all the funny sentences we were making.
A Cheese and Tomato Spider is a split panel flip book by Nick Sharratt (also author of 'Ketchup on your Cornflakes?' which is another split panel book) which enables children to see how words and objects match in combinations. Some sentences you can make are relatively sensible, such as 'Hooray! A birthday cake!', however, you can also make crazy combinations such as 'Cor!! An exploding Granny!'
The thing I like about this book is that it uses a wide range of exclamatory language, which is great for helping children to create a more expressive vocabulary; the large text and bright pictures are also a brilliant feature of the book.
I would probably recommend the book for Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children as the book could either be read to them, or they could read it on their own depending on their reading ability, and I could think of some great activities to engage the children in this book.
Overall, I would definitely rate this book for any class teacher wanting to make the children laugh!

A fun and cute book, with mix and match tiles, including funny descriptions such as "a wriggly ice cream" and "a deep sea cake."

What can I say? We just got this book from the library and my son has not stopped giggling since!
This book is cut into two sections, so you get very silly top and bottom matching sillyness, such as a spider pizza combination, a man with ice-cream on his head, a haunted house car!
Very silly, funny and colourful. The words are short and sweet and add to the laughter. I love this book, both my boys giggled and chuckled and my son would not leave the library till he had shown our library lady the pictures. He is now wandering around the house chuckling 'cheese and tomato spider, HA HA MUM!!
An ideal book for babies with a sense of humour, non-readers and readers just starting out. Fabulous.

This a fun book that proved very popular in buddy reading sessions between year 3 and year 1 children. Perhaps it was too popular as it often lead to other good books being ignored! The children loved the illustrations and the word plays provided a nice level of challenge for the younger children.
