As of August 2009, nine novels in the series have been published leaving only the final volume forthcoming. Erikson's series is complex with a wide scope, and presents the narratives of a large cast of characters. In 2005, Esslemont began publishing his own series of five novels set in the same world, beginning with Night of Knives. Although Esslemont's books are published under a different series title - Novels of the Malazan Empire - Esslemont and Erikson collaborated on the storyline for the entire fifteen-book project and Esslemont's novels are considered as canonical and integral to the series as Erikson's own.

The sheer scope of imagination involved here, the incredible world-building and the ability of each volume to create an incredible convergence of multiple, in-depth story elements, makes Erikson's series a masterpiece of epic fantasy.

Read this series. Seriously read this. I have read a significant number of fantasy novels and epic fantasy series and I have not encountered many that even came close to The Malazan Book of the Fallen. A word of warning though, This is not feel good fantasy. These books will very likely make you feel bad about life in general. You will very likely find yourself weeping uncontrollably at many different points throughout the series. It is the very soul crushing nature of this piece of work that makes it so very worthwhile. To this date I have not read something that has had such a palpable effect on my emotions. If your looking to read a series that is engaging and thought provoking and also extraordinarily well written then start this series today. If your easily put off by the violent and harsh realities of human nature and dont like crying when characters are killed off, I wouldnt recommend reading these books. You know what, scratch that, read it anyway. Even if its hard on you its still worth it.

I often have difficulty putting my feelings for Malazan into words. I started the series last July. I am an avid fantasy/sci-fi reader and I try to read it all. I have found that fantasy authors can't write as quickly as fantasy readers devour books. I know I have hit all the big ones. I read other genres as well but fantasy is and always will be my heart. I read everything available in Malazan including the series by Esslemont before I read and finished The Crippled God. I didn't want it to end. I felt like someone grabbed my heart and squeezed when I finished The Crippled God. These are the best novels I have ever read, without a doubt. I do not mean to put down other fantasy authors as many of them are amazing writers I will always love as well. Malazan is in a class of its own. It's incredible and I can only marvel at the sheer talent required to create such a beautiful, heart-rending, incomparable saga. It is not an easy read and can be very confusing at times. I would like to see anyone who enjoys reading to try the series but for the sake of honesty I must say it is not for everyone. The reader must be willing to not understand and trust the author to bring everything together when the time is right. Unlike some Malazan fans I did not go through a stage of frustration and feeling doubtful. I loved it from the first chapter in Gardens of the Moon. There are passages throughout the series I remember verbatim even though I wasn't trying to learn and recall, I was just that affected by many different passages. I became very attached to a fantastic array of characters even though the cast of characters is quite large. No one is insignificant, which is part of the appeal. Gods and rulers play important roles but the lowest ranking soldiers in the army are just as important. Malazan is truly an incredible experience.

Quite simply one of the best fantasy fiction sagas I have ever read. It is an epic tale woven through many characters and continents and in a way has ruined fiction for me as the bar has been so thoroughly raised. I think I enjoyed my re-read of all the books more enjoyable than the first.

Very good fantasy, loved the world, the characters and the over arching plot. Felt it lost it's way in the middle but not for long. Ending did the whole series justice. Though still wondering what happened to some of the characters that you meet and lose along the way. Will definitely reread many times.

Best fantasy series I've ever read. I've tried reading many of the most popular epic fantasy series and I lose interest around book 3 or 4. Erikson maintains the momentum, drive, and character development through the end...and beyond. Started reading the prequel trilogy and dragging it out so I don't have to wait between novels. Seriously addictive.

Really good, immersive fantasy. A bit hard to get into, and can be complicated to follow, but overall really enjoyed it.
