Ginjer L. Clarke writes fun, fact-filled nonfiction beginning readers about weird, wonderful animals. Her love for strange creatures started early, as the first story she remembers writing in the third grade was “The Strange Animal” about a small, pink-spotted imaginary creature called a Woofa. She loves that her job entails visiting zoos and aquariums, reading lots of books, and even watching TV for research. And she can work at home in her pajamas, which is a lifelong dream!
Ginjer’s books, most of which are part of Grosset & Dunlap’s All Aboard Science Reader series, have sold a combined total of more than 2 million copies worldwide. Her books Freak Out! and Gross Out! were on Publisher’s Weekly’s 2006 and 2007 lists of top 100 best-selling children’s books. Her books have been favorably reviewed in Booklist, Horn Book, School Library Journal, Children’s Literature, and regional newspapers and magazines, and are featured in Scholastic and Bedford Falls Book Fairs. Her book Platypus! (Random House Step into Reading) was awarded the Maryland Library Association’s 2005 Blue Crab Young Reader Award for Nonfiction and was selected by the National Science Teachers Association as recommended classroom reading.
Ginjer is an experienced and lively school, library, and conference presenter, who has appeared at more than 100 elementary schools, regional reading and writing conferences, statewide book festivals, many bookstores and libraries, and even a zoo. She is a graduate of James Madison University and lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, young son, and several silly-looking pets.
Super scientific and informational. This would be a great book for animal lovers or boys who love creepy icky facts. I enjoyed the facts even though they're super "gross". This is also another "reader/beginner book" rated a level 2.
It's my favrite book. I think it's weird that the mole rats eat there own poop 💩😲. Pranas I know about but that fast. And leeches just creep me out . This book is for people who love to learn! Like me! Lol have fun!

Book is pretty good. It does have one thing that isn't true. It claims the horned owl leaves the opossum alone because of the routing smell they can emit but owls don't have a sense of smell.
This Science storybook was very well done! My two special needs teen age sons giggled and laughed all through this book! They loved learning about the various weird and 'gross' things that different animals do...from eating another birds puke, to a frog's babies coming out of her back, to sucking blood, etc. Very nice way to help teach Science to children without really getting 'in their face' about all the facts and stuff.
This is a high interest early reader I learned about at an SCBWI conference. It is truly gross and covers some very interesting real animal that do gross things...squirt blood out of their eyes, eat other birds vomit, and hatch babies from their backs. It really grossed me out and I could see this really drawing in readers who can't find things of interest!
Gross Out by Ginjer L. Clarke, designed for reading with help. It provides short sentences, simple plots and simple dialogue. Though designed for children, everyone can find this a fun read with interesting and unusual facts about some of our strange creatures. The end of the book also includes a recipe for Owl Barf Balls, a foul sounding but tasteful treat to share with your young reader.
This book is all about animals that do gross things. This book is called Gross Out. This book is funny. It also has instructions on owl barf balls. Check this book out at the library!
My 2nd grader enjoyed reading this. She likes short chunks of reading and loves animals. We read a lot and it is getting difficult for us to find new concepts to read about. This fit the bill!
Target audience is mainly children but I enjoyed the interesting facts about a wide variety of animals that do gross things. There is a recipe in the back for pretend Owl Barf Balls.
