Something strange is happening in the Welsh mountains. It should be the middle of summer, but Snowdonia has been beseiged by blizzards and ice storms. A company of Arctic-trained soldiers sent to investigate has disappeared and the only remaining hope is a secret troop of yeti agents - the Mythical 9th Division. Fully illustrated, and with a four-page comic-strip introduction to each chapter, this exciting first story also comes with a top-secret yeti code-breaker!
Operation Robot Storm is the first of his new series wherein a hairy band of heroes (and their human friends) secretly save the world from a mad array of supervillains. The whole series is pure all-ages adventuresome fun. Action, comedy, cool gadgets, danger, twists, yaks sailing through the air: this is creativity that will spark any kid's imagination, and will keep Mom, Dad or whoever is reading to them amused. The series is perfect for reluctant readers or kids graduating into chapter books. Each new chapter opens with a few pages of comic book before blending into well-illustrated prose, and the educational content is present but never preachy.
Rather than summarize the plot of Operation Robot Storm, allow me to recommend viewing the promotional trailers on YouTube. They show what the book is about, and give a flavor for the style in which the story is told. My kid has watched each a couple dozen times, and he has gone and hooked his cousin and a friend on the Mythical 9th.
Any book comes with a few niggles, but when the most salient detraction that comes to mind is a typo, it's best to just skip to the seven-word summary: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY CRITICAL MICK AND SON.
This book is has comic book/graphic novel pages at the beginning of each chapter that helps set up the chapter. The pictures are black and white and throughout the book there are additional graphics to help readers visual key elements of the story. The Mythical 9th Division comprises of 3 Yeti's who work for the British Army. This division works in secret to solve problems. In this story, there is a sudden appearance of glaciers and snow in Wales. British officers have gone missing so the Yeti's are called in to rescue the officers. Things go from bad to worse for the Yetis. There is some basic humor and some action. I think this might appeal to readers who are looking for a mystery/adventure type book.
This series is original and entertaining, but not my personal favourite. My seven year-old, however, has really enjoyed me reading them out loud at bedtimes and there is plenty of action. He would probably rate it at four or five stars, so perhaps I should too. Alex Milway has created a wide range of great characters with some excellent banter between the three yetis and a classic cartoon-style bad guy for them to defeat each time. The chapters always begin with three to four pages in graphic novel format with engaging back and white drawings. The rest of the chapter is in prose. My son likes this format a lot.
I just finished reading this with my son who is nine years old. We both greatly enjoyed it! Exciting story that is different from the rest of the books for this age range. I’m definitely going to be getting the rest of the series for him.
It was such an awesome book! I am excited to read the second one. I NEED the second one! The whole series actually! I loved it because it is adventurous and fun. Kaylyn (age 8)
I picked up a different part of the series, and started reading but as I saw it was not part 1 had to get a copy of this one first.
I really love the style of part sequential art part words. In this book 3 yetis are on a mission to save the world from an evil villain named Balaclava from freezing the world.
It is a fun story, and the images and words work very well together. Will definitely be checking out Alex Milways other work.
Recommended by a student. Great for certain kids. I was bored- love the idea of yetis and big foots and other mythical creatures being used as special agents but the story had too much dialogue and was very mediocre.
