Artwork continues to improve and there's a lot of atmosphere in the setting, a great deal of good ideas it gives me - but the plot is beginning to lose me. The second half contained a very poor twist in it.
Ledroit’s art takes a quantum leap forward. The script seems a bit aimless. On the other hand, the fast-moving, wide-ranging narrative style provides a lot of opportunities for illustration and plays to LeDroit’s gift for design.
Art highlights include a strange episode where the heroes march through an army, filled with fantastically designed ogres, trolls, and giants. And another scene with woodland gnomes and elves. LeDroit displays his (perhaps) immaturity by lavishing attention where it doesn’t belong, and playing up emotions where they’re not called for. But the art is far and away the star, so I can’t fault him much.
After learning something of the identity and location of his father from the oracle, Wismerhill… settles down to rule as the baron of a small, backwater fiefdom. Needless to say, this isn’t good. If the hero doesn’t care about his quest, why do we?
Wismerhill dumps Fey for a succubus. While the latter’s allures are understandable, it does make him seem like kind of a jerk. He also ruthlessly forces Ghorghor to submit to his will.
The plot threads dealing with the black moon cult, the white knights, and the demons continue to be the worst part of the book. Sure, they’re important to the plot (presumably), but they’re too cryptic and under-developed. Who are these people and what do they want? The book is shaky on those questions.
