Michele Weiner-Davis, MSW is an internationally renowned relationship expert, best-selling author, marriage therapist, and professional speaker who specializes in helping people change their lives and improve important relationships. Among the first in her field to courageously speak out about the pitfalls of unnecessary divorce, Michele has been active in spearheading the now popular movement urging couples to make their marriages work and keep their families together. She is the author of seven books including her best-selling books, DIVORCE BUSTING: A Step-by-Step Approach to Making Your Marriage Loving Again (Simon & Schuster), and THE SEX-STARVED MARRIAGE: A Couple's Guide to Boosting Their Marriage Libido (Simon & Schuster).
Much better than the other book I read, but still only really helpful for inter-personal relationships. Intra-personal relationships are pretty much left for people to solve on their own. I guess that's fitting.
It's about the same basic idea, solution-oriented brief therapy (SBT). It's focusing on solutions instead of the cause of problems. It "helps people to envision a positive future and to identify... strategies to get there." Weiner-Davis suggests ways to apply these concepts yourself, without the guidance of a "shrink".
I like that it encourages positive action rather than dwelling on bad things that happened in the past, or are expected for the future.
I also like that it didn't feel like Weiner-Davis was talking down to me, like O'Hanlon did. The people in her stories feel more realistic, and I love how she explained their differing perspectives.
I would recommend both of these books, but if I had to pick just one, it would be this one.
My father, a therapist, recommended this book to me...well, mostly to my boyfriend but I ended up reading it for a completely different reason. Even if you don't have a "major" issue you need to work on, this book gives you some great ideas about how to handle hassles in your every day life and to change your way of thinking. If what you're doing isn't improving the situation...try something different! Thanks, Dad!
Don't let the title throw you off! This is a very good book with practical approaches to solving your nagging problems, many of which stem from behaviorial patterns.
