He's grumpy. He's shirtless. He's good with his hands… He's also my best friend's brother and the bane of my existence.
My plan was simple. Career, marriage and kids by the big 3-0. Instead my stepfather’s company went bankrupt taking my career (and relationship) with it. Now I’m fixing up my grandma’s ramshackle house in Violet Ridge, Virginia, trying to find a handyman who doesn’t mind being paid in brownie bars and bless your hearts.
Unfortunately the only handyman who doesn’t require six months and a kidney is Hendrix Evers.
I’m searching “how to sell a kidney” when Rix proposes we help each other out. He’ll fix up the house if I let him stay rent-free. To everyone else he’s a hardworking, small town hero, but he’s also my best friend’s older brother, so I know the truth. He’s rude, juvenile and has a long history of ruining things for me.
But when my attempts at DIY end in a flooded bathroom and almost falling to my death through a rotting porch, I figure I don’t have much to lose. Somehow I've become the breadwinner for my mom and little sister and the adoptive mom to a pug with anger issues. I can use all the help I can get.
Surely we can co-exist for one summer without burning the house down or strangling each other, right?
This was so not in the plan.
From RITA® Award winning author M. Malone comes a hilarious new standalone romantic comedy about starting over and failing upward! You Ruin Everything is a steamy, small town romance featuring puppy hijinks, unconventional friendships, a cantankerous Victorian home and a zany family at the center of it all.
M. Malone is a NYT and USA TODAY bestselling author, a RITA® Award winner, and a member of RWA's Hall of Fame.
She lives with her husband and their two sons in the picturesque mountains of Northern Virginia even though she is afraid of insects, birds, butterflies and other humans.
Since starting her indie publishing journey she has sold over a million books and her titles have hit the NYT and USA Today bestseller lists more than a dozen times. She also holds a Master’s degree in Business from a prestigious college that would no doubt be scandalized at how she’s using her expensive education.
I am so excited to unveil my new series about the Evers family of Violet Ridge, Virginia. Writing You Ruin Everything was the most fun I've had in years even if it made me pull my hair out sometimes. (It's my longest book ever. One More Day previously held the record.)
This book is everything I love about small town romance and enemies to lovers! So get ready for a deliciously fun slow burn romance between Charlie Monroe and Hendrix Evers AND the third wheel in their relationship, a pug with a vendetta. 🤣
Things I love about this book:
💕 City girl in a small town 💕 Grumpy / Sunshine ☀️ 💕 Enemies to Lovers 💕 Quirky Victorian House 💕 Puppy 🐶 with anger issues
Not bad. I liked the pug and the siblings' dynamic. There is some hot stuff in there too. The rest is just your average forced proximity, enemies to lovers (or is it a second chance?), small town handyman with rich girl gone broke.
She runs away from NY to her late grandma's small town. Her house needs to be fixed up by summer's end and he needs a place to stay, so they make an arrangement. They bicker until their feelings cannot be contained anymore.
This book was laugh out loud funny. There wasn’t much angst, and it’s a light read. I was able to relax and simply enjoy the story. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a break from deeply intense and stressful stories. It provided me with a sweet break from the usual dramatics.
"He's grumpy. He's shirtless. He's good with his hands… He's also my best friend's brother and the bane of my existence."
I loved the back and forth banter while also sensing the chemistry and emotional history with Hendrix and Charlie. Not to mention Meatball! I absolutely LOVED how intuitive Meatball is with Charlie and his unsureness with Hendrix.
The side characters were all amazing, too. I loved seeing the family atmosphere with Rix's family.
Overall, I loved everything about this book. I will definitely be checking out more of M. Malone's books.
It was likeable but predictable. His and her relationship was jarring originally. The first time they kissed came out of nowhere, and they both acted like it wasn’t a big deal. I was thinking how unusual to have reactions like they had. We later got the back story that it wasn’t their first kiss, and actually, they’ve been dancing around each other for years. The back story was helpful but came too late.
I loved his handy-man-ness. I liked he looked out for her. I liked his family.
The writing was ok. The book/plot was fine. The characters were fine. Nothing blew me away but there wasn’t anything terrible about it either.
Back with a review; you ruin eveuthing is a steamy (meaning PG-13 with language and some sexual things but you can skip it easily!)
I give it four stars because Charlie and Rix were a great couple; though they had a crazy childhood and miscommunication; they sought help from friends and they also put in the work to make the relationship better.
A grandmother leaves her old Victorian home in smalltown Virginia to her granddaughter. The young woman has such fond memories of spending mostly summers there and always dreamed of living there as an adult. Her best friend's older brother was always a pest and prank player when it came to the two friends, but when she returns to the smalltalk to redo the house guess who she hires to help her remodel? Nice characters in this predictable story.
Loved the childhood nemesis but actually just a cover for liking them plot. She comes back to town to fix up her grandmother’s house and her childhood nemesis comes to help her fix it up. Silly little dog, big family, and small town adventures! Loved this and hope for more from this small town. Definitely some side characters that need their own stories! Tana & Carter, Piper, Retta, and Billie when she grows up!
It sounds like a temper tantrum but maybe there is some truth to it when adolescents are being asked to make their way into a room with the same kind of behavior that is often called immature. Both the MMC and the MFC were just this sort of immature adolescents b/c they loved each other but didn’t know how to articulate it then and to stubborn to admit as adults.
I really enjoyed Charlie and Rixs and all their banter it kept me interested from start to finish and am hoping we see books for the other quirky characters throughout this book.
This is my first read of an M Malone book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are fun, there’s repressed feelings from years ago and a cute found pup who doubles as a comedy assault weapon. I can’t wait until the next one.
Just finished reading this little gem! This rom/com has everything it should, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, found family, and the list goes on. If you love rom/coms, this needs to be your next read! M. Malone had done it again!
Both Rix and Charlie are trying to hold on to the past but that doesn't work in the right here and now. Also their communication skills need lots of work!
In addition, way too many characters to keep track of.
Hendrix and Charlie had been childhood nemeses who had never REALLY disliked one another. Growing up certainly certainly helps change perspectives! Thankfully.
This book had me hooked from the very first page! The dynamic between the grumpy, shirtless Hendrix and the sunshine-filled city girl was electric. Their banter was witty, their chemistry undeniable, and the slow-burn romance kept me flipping pages late into the night.
The quirky Victorian house setting added so much charm, and the grumpy pug with anger issues was the perfect comic relief (and my favorite sidekick!). Watching Hendrix and the heroine navigate their shared summer—complete with emotional growth, sizzling tension, and heartfelt moments—was an absolute treat.
If you love enemies-to-lovers stories with a grumpy/sunshine trope, a lovable cast of characters, and a small-town vibe, this book is an absolute must-read. Highly recommend!
