I read this because I saw someone on the internet saying that Paddington is a rare example of a positive masculine representation in popular UK media that doesn't involve things like strength, heroics or caretaking.
I loved reading this because I needed something sweet and comfortable and easy to read, and I've discovered so many things about Paddington: An immigrant and neurodivergent young bear, he doesn't have it easy, and though adopted by the Brown family there are still instances of xenophobia and racism. For example, Paddington is given the name because he "doesn't really have a name" except for his Peruvian name "which no one understands" and he is promptly given an English name.
I want to know his Peruvian name!!! Aside from that I love this bear so much and this book is a clear cut and very sweet demonstration of how families are supposed to love – Paddington gets into trouble, makes messes and does the most dangerous and outrageous things, and Mr and Mrs Brown are never too angry and never make him feel unsafe. I <3 this.

Mr. und Mrs. Brown finden am Bahnhof Paddington einen kleinen Bären, der sprechen kann und aus dem dunkelsten Peru kommt. Er will nun in England Fuß fassen, aber leider weiß der kleine Bär nicht wohin er soll und wie man mit Dingen wie Rolltreppen, Badewannen etc. umgeht.
Schnell erobert der süße Bär die Herzen der Familie Brown (und des Lesers) und wird kurzerhand adoptiert.

Das Hörbuch ist fantastisch gesprochen von Jürgen Thorman ( der dt. Stimme von Michael Caine) . Seine Stimme schafft es den Zauber der Kindheit hervorzurufen und somit auch Menschen, fern der Zielgruppe zu begeistern. Es ist als würde man einem Märchenerzähler lauschen. Es ist ein wirkliches Highlight aus seinem Mund die Geschichten von Paddington zu hören. Mit viel Energie und sehr viel Warmherzigkeit, lässt er wundervolle Bilder entstehen und nimmt einen mit in eine Welt, in der Bären sprechen können und aus dem dunkelsten Peru als blinder Passagier nach England reisen.

In den kleinen amüsanten Episoden nehmen wir Teil an dem Leben vom Paddington Bär und verlieben uns nicht nur in ihn, sondern in die Herzlichkeit der gesamten Familie Brown. Mit offenen Armen und offenen Herzen nehmen sie den Bären bei sich auf und kümmern sich um ihn.
Zusammen mit Paddington sehen wir Dinge wie Theater, Kaufhäuser und Rolltreppen mit neuen Augen.

Das Buch ist ein wirklicher Klassiker der Kinderliteratur und sollte in keinem Kinderzimmer fehlen. Und ich bin der beste Beweis dafür, dass der kleine Bär auch Erwachsenenherzen zum Schmelzen bringen kann.

Jürgen Thorman und Paddington sind eine zauberhafte und sehr berührende Mischung.

Leicht zu lesen, auch, wenn mir hier etwas der rote Faden fehlt und es irgendwie auch zu viele Geschichten gab, in denen sich Paddington kurz von den Browns trennte und dann in peinliche Situationen geriet.

These two novels are favorites in our house. I've been reading the first one since my daughter was 2. My children are now 12 and 9 and they still enjoy having me read them aloud. I also love them. They are very funny and also sweet and wholesome.

Ich möchte Geschichten mit Bären schon als Kind. Paddigton zählte definitiv zu meinen Favoriten. Auch als Erwachsener macht es noch Spaß den tollpatschigen kleinen Bären bei seinen Abenteuern zu begleiten. Ich freue mich schon darauf das Buch mal meinen Kindern vorzulesen :)

Die Geschichte beginnt mit einer kuriosen Entdeckung von Mr. Brown am Bahnhof Paddington. Da sitzt doch tatsächlich ein kleiner Bär in der Ecke und sieht dabei so entsetzlich verloren aus, dass die Familie Brown kurzentschlossen beschließt den Bären, welchen sie passender weise auf den Namen Paddington taufen, mit nach Hause zunehmen. Sie ahnen aber schon bald, dass ihr Leben von nun an nicht mehr in den gewohnten ruhigen Bahnen verlaufen wird. Denn Paddington scheint das Chaos magisch an zu ziehen. Da er bei seinen kleinen und großen „Unfällen“ aber immer so entsetzlich niedlich aussieht, kann ihm jedoch keiner lange böse sein.

Ich kenn Paddington noch aus meiner Kindheit und fand ihn schon damals unglaublich putzig in seiner tollpatschigen Art, mit welcher er immer allen helfen will, nur um am Ende ein totales Durcheinander zu veranstalten. Auch jetzt als Erwachsener konnte mich der kleine Bär aus Peru immer noch begeistern, genau wie meine 5 jährigen Tochter. Somit sei wohl bewiesen, dass die Geschichte für Jung und Alt ein tolles Hörerlebnis bietet.
Grade der britische trockene Humor, der hier immer wieder durchschimmert ist für die ältere Generation ein besonderes Vergnügen. Denn wer kommt nicht ins Grinsen bei Sätzen wie:

„Ich glaube man wünscht allgemein das ich mich wasche. Ich hatte nämlich einen Unfall…mit einem Kuchen“ (Paddington)

oder

„Bären kosten 2 Schilling extra, schmutzige Bären 3 Schilling“ (Taxifahrer).

Schön ist auch, dass die Gesamthandlung in mehrere kleinere, in sich abgeschlossene Geschichten, aufgeteilt ist. So ist es grade für Kinder möglich sich das doch etwas längere Hörbuch in Abschnitte einzuteilen, ohne dabei mitten in der Geschichte abbrechen zu müssen. Aber natürlich ist es auch kein Problem, wie in meinem Fall, das Hörbuch in einem Rutsch zu hören. Denn Spannung und Vielfältigkeit bieten die einzelnen Abenteuer allemal.

Zuletzt sei noch der wunderbar passend gewählte Sprecher erwähnt. Jürgen Thormann hat eine richtig schöne ruhige bärige Stimme, welche Paddington wirklich zum Leben erwecken kann. Die älteren Hörer werden seine Stimme vielleicht auch mit Alfred, dem Butler von Batman, in Verbindung bringen. Was ich aber eher als positiven Nebeneffekt erachte, denn dessen Charakter geht doch irgendwie mit dem von Paddington konform.

Fazit:

„Geschichten von Paddington“ ist ein sehr gelungenes Hörerlebnis, welches Jung und Alt begeistern kann. Danach steht mit Sicherheit auf der ein oder andern Haustierwunschliste ganz oben: „ein kleiner Bär aus dem tiefsten Peru“ und ich kann es keinem Kind verdenken, hätte ich doch selbst nur allzu gerne einen Paddington im Haus, auch wenn die Marmelade dann wohl immer alle wäre.

This is an omnibus edition, comprising the first two books (A Bear Called Paddington and More About Paddington). Paddington is a brilliant character. He always gets himself into trouble, but comes out of it well. Bears always land on their feet, as Mrs Bird the housekeeper is fond of saying! The stories are lively and fun. I was laughing out loud at least once in every chapter as I read this. The old fashioned nature of the book adds to its charm – think Mary Poppins style. It’s all in old money, they have a housekeeper and the two children go off to boarding school. Mr Brown smokes a pipe (it would be unthinkable to have smoking in a modern children’s book!). I quite like this, it feels homely as my dad was always smoking his pipe when I was a kid (though we didn’t live in a big Victorian house near Kensington like the Browns!).
For a young child (or those like me who never grew up), this is brilliant entertainment. My young niece bought and read her own copies of the Paddington books, so they still appeal to modern kids. Peggy Fortnum’s line drawings are very expressive, and really add to the feel of the book. Six full colour illustrations were added for the omnibus edition, too, which are very nice. I can’t wait to re-read the rest of the set, but will make myself wait for a while in between each, so it doesn’t get too repetitive.

I really enjoyed this series (that which I read anyway). Though the writing is formulaic in nature and doesn't really change much, Paddington never disappoints. He is always getting into something in his ignorant, innocent fashion. These books aren't very deep or thought-provoking, but they make a good read for younger readers and those who enjoy plays on words. Very similar to series such as Miss Pickerel, Marty the Martian, Amelia Bedelia, etc.

The Paddington stories remind me of Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh stories, only shorter and less clever. I still liked them, but not the way I love Pooh.
