The exploits of a young Dom Juan constitute a short, provocative, and scratchy novel piece.
We follow the initiatory sexual journey of Roger, the main character, from childhood to adulthood. Between the end of the 19th century and the 20th century's beginning, the story relates the child's life who discovers sexuality and its pleasures. First, out of curiosity, then out of play, and finally out of an insatiable frenzy, he devotes himself to learning about his body and the women around him. The narrator pays little attention to family "prohibitions" and leads his aunt and sisters in his unbridled games. But, of course, almost all "maids" will also go to the pan.
The author plays with great pleasure with the reader's fantasies, leading him into a whirlwind of meaning, often frankly "pigs," lingering on smells including the most ungrateful, not without humor more than offbeat.
A disturbing novel turned (and returned) only to guilty pleasures in prose that could not better describe than by the expression "joliment troussée."

Rayano en la pedofilia, tal tipo de aventuras no es exclusivo en esta novelita: hay también incesto, adulterio, e incluso se sitúa muy próximo al acoso sexual y laboral, si no fuera porque todas las criadas de la casa acaban accediendo de muy buen grado a las acometidas del joven protagonista.

Las características del acto amoroso, por otra parte, podrían englobarse en un “coitus ininterruptus” a lo largo de 101 páginas. Lo raro es que el héroe regrese al estado de flacidez tras cada hazaña y, si esto ocurre, ese reposo no dura mucho tiempo. Son las protagonistas femeninas las que terminan extenuadas. Pero eso no importa, porque en un abrir y cerrar de ojos aparece otra heroína o dama caritativa que toma el relevo.

Eso sí, no piensen que el sexo es el único tema de este libro. Yo, sin ir más lejos, he encontrado un asuntillo que recae en la sociolingüística y la pragmática. Es como sigue: una adúltera, en los primeros escarceos amorosos, trata al joven amo de “usted”. El joven amo le ruega que se traten de “tú” y, a continuación, clava la cuestión bien hondo.

No sé si ustedes serían capaces de apreciar esos sutiles detalles. La verdad, hay que estar muy atento entre tanta fornicación. Por otra parte, las dos líneas finales del relato hacen una referencia a la sociología imperialista de la Francia del momento, en un acto de cinismo.

Una obrita entretenida, pero me gustó mucho más otra novela del mismo autor que leí hace muchos años: Las once mil vergas.

Ce texte est un roman érotique français du début du vingtième siècle écrit par Guillaume Apollinaire, un poète. L'histoire n'a pratiquement plus rien à voir avec le mythe de Don Juan, si ce n'est qu'il est question d'un homme et de plusieurs femmes, mais notre héros n'a rien ici d'un séducteur hypocrite, malin et trompeur. Ces moyens sont inutiles, comme le remarquait Charles Perrault dans son Chat Botté, pour qui a l'habit, la mine et la jeunesse. Ici, on est également bien loin des écrits libertins érudits du dix-septième siècle, où le voile de l'allégorie venait recouvrir ce que les mystères de Vénus pouvaient avoir de blessant pour la pudeur. Rien de tout cela ici, Apollinaire appelle un chat un chat, et rien n'est épargné pour bientôt faire bouillir le sang fatigué du pauvre lecteur qui n'en demandait pas tant.

Dans cet univers fantasmagorique, les désirs ne sont jamais contrariés, ne coûtent aucune peine, aucun remord, aucun dégoût ni aucun regret, tout en restant pourtant aussi vifs que possible, pleins de gaité et d'ardeur. Chagrin, jalousie, dépit et rancune ne sont pas de saison; on n'entend qu'éclats de rire joyeux, gloussements polissons et cris de surprise amusés. Les transports érotiques des héros sont aisés, simples, faciles, naturels, et jamais une quelconque petite voix raisonnable ne vient tarauder trop longtemps les consciences de notre petit fripon insinuant ou de ses complaisantes complices, lesquelles ne lui opposent jamais qu'une très accorte résistance, quand elles ne viennent pas d'elles-mêmes l’agacer.

Le sujet étant sans doute le plus propre du monde pour conduire à la lassitude, l'auteur se démène comme un beau diable pour prévenir l'ennui du lecteur avec toute la variété que permet la nature et le piquant qu'offre toute transgression. La tendresse de l'âge du héros, sa candeur et son ingénuité travaillent de leur côté à désarmer la juste indignation de la morale outragée et des convenances bafouées. Tant et si bien va ce petit train que les plus grandes outrances et les pires scandales prennent ici les couleurs des choses les plus innocentes et les plus naturelles qui soient, et se résolvent en bagatelle et pirouette de comédie.♫

I ... um ... I don't think I can give this a starred review. Rating does not compute, because it didn't feel quite like a "real" book to me. More like ... a primitive attempt to create a virtual reality experience. You see, you hear, you smell, you taste, explicitly and that's the whole point, the only reason for being there. Fun, for sure, but not to be judged exactly by my usual standards. So here goes the attempt to word my thoughts on these Amorous Exploits.

What are you in for if you read this book?

- The arousal of children and adults together. WTF? It's not sick, not abusive, not really even pedophilia. In fact it seems like mature females touching little boys and girls might have been a form of nurture and comfort in the Victorian period. If you are willing to detach yourself from the modern horror of sexually abusing children, you realize there is nothing 'morally' wrong or disgusting or hurtful about what Apollinaire is describing in the earlier chapters. I'm curious to find out the historical authenticity of such a practice. (But where on Earth would one find that out?)

- Bestiality. WTF? We're all animals ... technically ... he was stretching it a tiny bit on this one, for me. Geese aren't dildos. The dog wasn't big enough? Excuse my grammar for a sec. LOL.

- Incest. WTF? And lots of it. Both sisters and an auntie become Roger's fellow explorers. I think mummy is the only one who avoids deeper relations with him, and that's not for Roger's failure to be attracted to her. Presumably, he'll become every bit as "imaginative" as her husband, and who knows? An Oedipus-on-purpose scenario is not out of the questions. By the way, the back-cover description is inaccurate. He fucks his sister first.

And except for the peasant scene, they're all so polite and (I get the impression) sincere about it. It's kind of lovely to read how Roger woos woman after woman, his nice seductive phrases never getting stale, false or repeated. (Well, maybe repeated a bit, but they all want the same thing anyway, dammit.) There's this combination of burning desire and overarching respect; Roger never gets close to raping anyone, so far as I can gather. Almost everyone he approaches (thus, almost everyone with a vagina) is remarkably willing to comply for mutual enjoyment. This book makes no claims to realism. Oh, man. I just realized how messed-up the unities of time are in this thing. But it's all to good effect. Good thing it's a mere fifty pages, because you can't really stop once you start.

I liked reading about the experimentation of himself and his partners. They discover new levels of experience together, dominating the union only by turn. It felt - I dunno, more innocent, somehow. And holy crap, Apollinaire, if you can achieve any feel of innocence, in a work like this, maybe you deserve five stars after all.

What's funniest about this kind of book is how quickly it grows on you just speaking for myself - on me. There is the initial "Holy #$&%" moment, the muffled, half-dismayed laughter, and then the expanding sense of "Okaaay...." And then I read on and do it again.

Overall, judging by Rakehell, Apollinaire treats erotica as a genre that should be as worthy of literary reading as it's possible (again, for me) to imagine. True, there's no plot to speak of, but the imagery is actually quite lovely. Though it's eyebrow-raising stuff for the uninitiated, it's a decent introduction to smutty books. Read, laugh, learn with Roger (maybe?! oh dear, I shouldn't even post that), feel, and go with the flow. I'm not sorry I did.

Became interested in his erotic writings just recently, though some might call this pornography. It's very sexually candid, and I actually appreciated that about it. As for the story, well he does the maid, his sister, and pretty much anyone else who is remotely willing.

Poet/playwright/author Guillaume Apollinaire was a pretty important guy in his day. He is said to have coined the term “Surrealism” and to have written one of the earliest surrealist plays. He was a big deal in Montparnasse, and moved in some heady artistic circles. He was wounded in WWI and died from Spanish Flu. I’ve always meant to read something of his, and last month I decided to make it Amorous Exploits of a Young Rakehell, otherwise known as Les exploits d'un jeune Don Juan, because of Christopher Hart’s list of essential erotica on Guardian.co.uk.

I am a fan of smut (a word I use with great affection), so I am very glad I read this. But if you are not a fan of smut you may want to skip the spoiler section of my review because I will be using the same language as Apollinaire. My spoiler alert is really a smut alert. It should also be noted that you may just find out a bit too much information about me and my sexuality. Consider yourself warned.

This little novella is about the sexual awakening and voraciousness of a boy named Roger (how fitting!). He fucks his sisters, the maid, all of the serving girls, and his Aunt. He gets one sister pregnant, one of the serving girls pregnant and his Aunt pregnant (he does act as the godfather for his children, though, so that’s nice). He listens in on the confessions of the villagers, using a secret passage that runs from the library to the chapel, where we get detailed descriptions of a man’s sexual encounters with a cow, another man’s encounters with goats, and another man’s fetish for grey haired, both above and below, women. Plus, we hear all about the S&M games of his mother and father, and his Aunt’s use of candles. It is an education in all sorts of sexuality (except boy-boy sexuality), that might even make Matthew Stokoe blush.

There really is no plot at all. It’s just sex. One tryst after another. But there is something marvellous, even in translation, about the sensuality of Apollinaire��s writing.

Taste: it’s there in everything Roger does. All the Lady Janes he licks, the semen he swallows (always his own, sadly), the mouths he kisses, they all have flavours that Apollinaire wants us to taste.

Touch: this is expressed using all of Roger’s extremities and even his anus. His tongue and fingers are thrust into "potholes" and "fleeces," and they caress every inch of every voluptuous or nubile or pregnant or mature body, offering us the textures and jiggles and resistances and warmth and moisture of every inch of flesh he comes in contact with. And the boy touches -- constantly.

Sight: this is nearly overwhelming. The loving descriptions of every cunt and arse-hole Roger sees are marvellously titillating, as are the descriptions of his own sizable prick. But it is the smells that are the most erotic, at least for me.

Smells: Roger smells everything; it’s a preoccupation. The odour di femina as he calls it, will bring his penis to full erection quicker than anything else. He describes the smells of urine in pubic hair, the faint whiff of feces when he’s busy with a behind, the smell of menstruation and the mustiness of armpits and night sweat and anything else you can imagine. If that’s your bag, and it is definitely mine, it is incredibly erotic It’s also the stuff of life.

My only complaints would be that there wasn’t enough "prick" (although there was a wonderful chapter all about Roger’s masturbation), and Apollinaire never really engaged in the sounds of sex, for all his sensuality. Even with these shortcomings –- and the incest and bestiality and molestation and sexism and privilege and rapaciousness -- Amorous Exploits of a Young Rakehell did exactly what it was supposed to do -- it made me horny as hell.

Now what I want to know is how I get my hands on the French film version from the eighties? Something tells me it will be almost impossible, and hell, these days it might even be illegal. That’s okay though, Amorous Exploits of a Young Rakehell is a fast read, and now that I own it I can go back and enjoy the titillation whenever I want.

I feel so dirty. But in a good way.

Apollinaire'in bu kitabını okuduğumda aklıma gelen ilk şey böyle bir yazarın böyle bir kitabı ülkemizde yazması halinde nasıl sonuçlar doğacağıydı. Öyle ya, bizde okul müfredatlarına göre "büyük" olarak nitelendirilen ve metinlerinin başına kocaman kafaları yerleştirilmek zorunda olan yazar şahsiyetler gençler için tam anlamıyla birer ahlaki-didaktik kılavuz olmak zorundaydılar. Mehmet Akif mi, yeeee, Yahya Kemal mi, oooo, onlar hem eserleri, hem hayatlarıyla ne büyük, ne eksiksiz, ne kusursuz, ne "tam" insanlardılar. Oysa Fransız şiirinin en önemli isimlerinden olan, ki pek çok şiirini okudum bence de tartışmasız öyledir - Apollinaire aklına estiği bir anda gayet basit, gayet ciddiyetsiz, doğrudan ve hatta "ahlak dışı" bir kitap yazabilmiş ve bu durum Fransız toplumu tarafından kabul görebilmişti. "Ahlak dışı" derken, elbette ahlak göreceli bir kavram sayılabilir ve Genç Bir Don Juan'ın Maceraları'na kolayca ahlaksız bir kitap falan diyemezsiziniz. Divertito ma non troppo divertente racconto di inizi '900 che, con l'intento di scandalizzare i borghesi, dopo un po' invece annoia. C'e' un po' di tutto. Un campionario di incesti e perversioni varie (o presunte tali) che non riescono a risollevare le sorti della lettura. Sciatto nello stile, avrebbe potuto trovare miglior fortuna grazie al tono solare e non il solito fumoso funereo registro di racconti simili, ma evidentemente l'impegno profuso non e' stato il massimo; insomma troppo o troppo poco per farne un bel libretto.

L’écriture licencieuse présentée sous ses airs les plus prosaïques s’assimile infailliblement à une pure et crue débauche.
Irrévérencieux, scabreux, il l’est bien ce récit.
Une littérature érotique sans finesse, délestée de ses préliminaires, apparats et ses plus sensuels atours : « Les exploits d’un jeune Don Juan » est un roman d’initiation sexuelle et amoureuse assez cru, l’imaginaire pervers prenant amplement le dessus, les ébats s'enchaînent d’un chapitre à l’autre sans retenue.
« J’éprouvais une espèce de colère de ce que toutes les personnes féminines de la maison avaient le droit d’entrer dans la salle de bain même quand j’y étais, tandis que je n’avais pas ce droit. Et je trouvais absolument abusif qu’on m’en interdit l’entrée même lorsqu’on baignait seulement ma sœur Élisabeth, car je ne voyais pas pourquoi, malgré qu’elle affectât des airs de demoiselle, on la traitât différemment de nous. »
Les personnages figurant dans ce récit font partie de ce cocon aisé de la société française, non bourgeoise, ayant jeté leur dévolu sur la vie campagnarde : Cette campagne qui sera le piédestal sur lequel danseront haut les mains les plaisirs sexuels les plus fous et intrépides.
Ayant eu affaire à la trilogie « Fifty Shades of Grey » il y a quelques mois de cela, je ne me vois pas du tout déconcerté de ces descriptions crûment égrillardes, mettant tout de même en avant la nudité et la sensualité qu’elle génère des manières les plus équivoques qui soient.
« Oh ! mon Dieu ! Roger, si quelqu’un te voyait, dit-elle à mi-voix, sans pourtant détourner ses regards.
– Personne n’est dans le voisinage, Berthe », r��pondis-je sur le même ton. Puis, je me relevai, me mis devant elle, soulevai ma chemise et lui dis : « Puisque je t’ai vue tout entière, tu peux me voir tout entier. »
Les fantasmes de l’auteur dépassent les limites de l’imagination tracées par le bel érotisme : On croise de ces scènes d’inceste, de sodomie, de voyeurisme et les quelques allusions de zoophilie entre les lignes.
Malgré la présence de la « chapelle » et du « capucin », la religion devant normalement intervenir en tant que facteur capital d’équilibre émotionnel voit son importance totalement écrasée sous le poids de la perversion.
« Je voulais m’attarder dans cette agréable position après la décharge, mais la régisseuse se retourna et se recouvrit pudiquement. Pendant qu’elle reboutonnait sa camisole, j’entendis un petit flic-flac, c’était mon sperme qui coulait de son con et était tombé sur le sol. Elle l’étala avec le pied et frotta sa jupe entre ses cuisses pour s’essuyer. »
Les plaisirs coupables causés par le frénétisme sans aucune intrigue, dans une époque où la pruderie persistait dans telles contrées se voit orientée in fine vers la notion de « harem » formée à la suite des conquêtes sexuelles insatiables du Don Juan.
Dire que l’interdit dans la lecture ne la rend pas forcément fade !

Une «histoire» très sexuelle c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire. N'est pas sans rappeler Sade, en un peu moins tordu. Pas vraiment d'histoire en soi pour être honnête, plus ou moins un ramassi d'acte sexuel décrit qui se succède... Cela a tout de même du en choquer quelques-uns lorsqu'on considère que ce livre fut publié pour la première fois en 1911.

Será extraño pero disfruto mucho la cruda, sucia y obscena prosa de Apollinaire. Este escritor respresenta con claridad el concepto de los opuestos extremos que se tocan. No és una obra major, és una obreta. Una novel·leta eròtica (de fet, MOLT eròtica). Però si això és el que volia l'autor, fer una obreta d'alt voltatge que es llegís en dos hores, ho va aconseguir plenament.

La traducció d'en Jesús Moncada és bona, però amb algun problemet gramatical, sobretot les ultracorreccions amb el verb ser en comptes de estar.
