The first thing I learned at Vet school was to always expect the unexpected. Well, I sure never saw Santiago Torres or his adorable Great Dane coming.
Santi is everything I’m not. Tall, confident, overbearing, and if I’m to believe his advances, he’s also very experienced in...well, you know what.
I always play safe, but it’s time to ditch the v-card. We couldn’t be more different, but that doesn’t matter because this is just a one time thing.
I’m not going to want more, right? I’m not going to fall for him, right?
How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in the Chester Falls series and features an opposites attract story between a virgin and a player, a Great Dane with a tendency to rescue- read kidnap- other people’s pets, and a small town like no other.

I RECEIVED THIS AS A YULE GIFT. THANKS, ANONYMOUS ELF!
My Review: Author Ana Ashley was brand new to me, but this entry is in a series of connected gay romances that wasn’t at all new...it’s the sixth in an all-from-one-town trope of small-world-building interconnected stories. In this case it’s called “Chester Falls, Connecticut.”
An Army veteran and a small-town veterinarian from the same little town get tangled up...literally...in a meet-cute that got my smiles. Hot guy falls for ordinary one works, too. The fact that it’s in an interconnected series detracted a little bit from my enjoyment because I didn’t get the in-jokes; the way they’re presented I couldn’t miss them being in-jokes. I definitely think the author relies on them being familiar more than is entirely wise.
I do mildly recommend the read though with the reservation that there are eight (8) w-bombs and none of them were in any way needed to make any kind or sort of point about the characters doing it or having it done at them.

How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in Ana Ashley's Chester Falls series and one of my favorites (as I've said about probably each and every installment in this series). It just keeps getting better and better and you can clearly see how Ana Ashley has grown as an author through this series.
I loved Micah and Santi. And I loved the pets. And I loved seeing the guys from previous books. I loved being back in Chester Falls. It's just as sweet and lovely as the previous books but this one has some underlaying emotions. Both Micah and Santi are struggling. Together, however they just made each other stronger.
I can't wait for the last book in the series, but I'm also sad that it's almost over. What a journey it has been.
I loved this series. It’s been one of my all time favorites. But for some reason this one was just ok. I never really connected with the main characters. Santiago was this super butch military man. Yet the first time they had anal sex he wanted to bottom. That’s a definite turn off for me. And I had a problem picturing Micha. He saw himself as fat, but the other guys described him as sexy. If he was sexy why had no other guy been interested in him.
I don’t know it all just came across as kind of bland. I’d really been looking forward to this book for a long time and was so excited when it popped up in my email today. It just didn’t live up to my expectations.
The best book in this series, 2 MCs that are not perfect, but that are perfect for each other. Micah is a veterinarian and overweight and Santi is a veteran with a disease that will soon blind him None of these conditions have any importance for these 2 men although for each of them it is cause for insecurity that love for each other and for animals will heal It's so nice to go back to seeing old friends of this series especially my favorite, Tom, always like himself and meet adorable animals that help unite Micah and Santi
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
I had no clear expectations starting this book, other than clearing the confusion of it being vet as in "veterinary" or "veteran". Turns out, it's both. This book is incredibly sweet and heartwarming. And, as a chronically ill person, I'm glad we have someone with an incurable disease who actually has to learn to live with it. It's nice to see a snapshot of yourself in paper.
How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in Ana Ashley's Chester Falls series. It's a great addition to this small town world.
This story is one of a vet and a veteran. And there's a lot going on.
Santi is home after leaving the service. And unfortunately, he's losing his eyesight. Oh man, this element had me wanting to hug him tight. My heart breaks for him throughout, despite his ability to handle it well.
Micah's a veterinarian who's struggling to keep his business going. Course he has a former bully who's set on making his life difficult, which doesn't help.
Their story is one with a lot of self doubts. Santi doesn't feel worthy of love as he's losing his sight, while Micah feels unworthy of love as he struggles with his weight.
Their story includes first times and plenty of heat.
And then there are the animals. Omg, I absolutely love these animals and the constant new additions to the crew. Honestly, this aspect alone makes this worth the read.
With an overall theme exploring that the past doesn't define us, I am impressed with the way the author illustrates this. This story is compelling and emotional throughout.
How to Catch a Vet is a sweet romance. Ana Ashley kept me entertained and delighted throughout this heartwarming tale.
Micah was an adorable veterinarian, and Santi was a hot and sexy veteran. I loved Santi in Luca and Ryan’s book, and it was great to see the struggling Santi find love. Santi was discharged from the military due to vision loss, and it was very admirable to see a story line where the MC has a disability that isn’t just miraculously cured and/or doesn’t stop them from finding love.
I am really enjoying this series. It is cool to have a series take place in Connecticut, even if it isn’t fully realistic. I can definitely imagine Chester Falls in my lovely state, but I will tell you that I can’t think of anyone who would have New Haven as their retirement goals. Lol. That is easy to forgive, however, as I continue to love all of the Chester Falls characters.
I think this one might be my favourite of the Chester Falls books. Quite a few of the previous couples appear so I'd recommend reading those first. Micah is a shy and quiet guy, much better with animals than people. Very self conscious, especially about his weight. He's always had a crush on Santi who is a little older than him. Santi has always noticed Micah but because of his career and now a life changing diagnosis, he doesn't think he can offer a relationship. There isn't a lot of drama, just little blips and no big dramatic break up. It's just cute, especially with the animals. Santi's dog likes to adopt things - hilarious! The steam isn't off the charts but fits the overall tone and the circumstances of the characters. Micah was just everything. He had such a poor view of himself but was such a kind person and he helped Santi overcome things so well. I'm really excited about the last book now
Okay, I've never read any other books in this series and you don't HAVE to as 80% of the book is just the two guys but you would understand better who some of the supporting characters are if you read them in order I suppose.
Santi(ago) is a military vet who had to leave the military for medical reasons he's yet to accept and has moved home. He has a giant dog who makes a habit of collecting neighborhood pets, including a duck, kitten and more. He ends up at the vet clinic with one of them and meets Micah. Micah moved back home to take over his Grandfather's vet practice. He's a 29 year old virgin, very self-conscious of his larger size, but Santi is fascinated and likes him how he is but is determined to not get involved because of his medical condition. Of course we all know how well those plans go in books.
I liked that Micah was larger and that Santiago was able to make him feel sexy and accepted, and of course guys with animals is always a bonus. I was also pleased that medically, there wasn't an easy solution that made the problem go away and everyone be 100% healthy again. It's a forever issue they'll have to deal with.
I was less enamoured with the mean girls story line where some high school colleague who was embarrassed because Micah wouldn't date her 12 years ago wanted him to take an add out in the paper apologising and threatened to have her husband close him down. Does that really still happen? Is there a reason I left my small town and didn't look back? Do those things still go on where people hold grudges for 12+ years from shit that happened when you were 17? Maybe it does and I'm just removed. If it does, ugh. So glad I left.
So on the whole it was a cute story with the animals and a little bit of relationship drama that is solved within an hour. I'm sure fans of the series will appreciate the cameos by other characters including Santi's brother and various locals.
How to Catch a Vet is book six of the Chester Falls series by Ana Ashley. When Doctor Micah Sawyer graduated from university as a VET, he re-opened his grandfather's veterinary clinic. Micah Sawyer believed that no one would love him because he thought what the bullies from high school told him. The return of Santiago Torres, whom Micah always had a crush on during high school, will finally be his time to find love. The readers of How To Catch A Vet will continue to follow Micah and Santiago to discover what happens.
How to Catch a Vet is the first book I read by Ana Ashley, and I engaged with the story and the characters from the first page. I like that the author highlighted the issues of homophobic sentiment and the consequences for the community. I love Ana Ashley's portrayal of her characters and their interaction with each other throughout this book. How to Catch a Vet is well-written and researched by Ana Ashley. I like Ana Ashley's description of the settings of How to Catch a Vet, which complemented the book's plot.
The readers of How to Catch a Vet will learn about genetic eye disorders called retina pigmentosa and the problems people suffer from. Also, the readers will learn about a dog disease called Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus Syndrome, commonly called gastric torsion. . I recommend this book.
It’s official, the animals have it! I’m infatuated with all the animals in this series but especially in this book. Their adorable personalities and their playful and sweet antics had me chuckling. When you add in the wonderful duo of Micah and Santi, I’m all in. “I need to know it’s not only okay to not be perfect, but it can also can be good too. Let’s fumble together, yeah?” I loved getting to know these two. They’re honest, real and I would love to grab a cinnamon roll or three with them. Full of feel-good moments, this book (and series) is a breath of fresh air and a treat to read.
Oh man, Oh man, Oh man... I NEVER WANT THIS SERIES TO END!! I wanna hear Zeke's story, Harrison's story, etcetera, etcetera... Your stories are just amazing, seriously. The uniqueness of each character and their relationships are pretty great. They're fiction obviously, but so relatable and real. Thank you for inviting me into your head and heart, Ana. I am so grateful to be a part of your beautiful, yet fictional, world... #AudibleAddict❤️ #GaGa4Goodreads🖤 -Nikki📚
The shy virginal almost 30 year old veterinarian reconnects with the military veteran who is losing his sight. Lots of cute animals, lots of angst, all in all, ok.
Great story! Micha and Santi's story was wonderful to read. The menagerie that comes into their lives is extremely loveable too. There were a few ppl I wanted to throat punch but so did SantI so...if he wants to in the next book, I will have his back. I loved every aspect of this story and spending time with the others from the previous books. The hardest part will be waiting til December for the next book. Shout out to Olive and get chosen family!
Oh my sweet Micah - I could identify with him so much!!! His anxiety and insecurities about his body, his experience with bullies in school, finding it difficult to talk to people, feeling like everyone else were getting ahead of him in life... I just want to hug him and befriend him!! It was lovely to see Santi again too after the holiday novella he appeared in earlier, and I much appreciate the disability rep! I also absolutely adore all the pets and their ever-growing family!!
Also this quote at the end, thank you Ana 💖 "I knew that, just like Charlie caught his prince, Tom caught his rival, Connor caught his bodyguard, Indy caught his bachelor, and Aiden caught his biker, so had I caught my own, sexy vet." It really just brought the whole series together!!
How to Catch a Vet is the sixth book in Ana Ashley’s diverting Chester Falls series. Each book spins out a charming small-town romance featuring endearing characters and interesting, often surprising, couples. How to Catch a Vet is no exception.
Santiago Torres, brother of Luca and BFF of Ryan from How to Catch the Boss, has returned to his hometown of Chester Falls after being discharged from the military due to a devastating health diagnosis. His life has been upended. He’s reeling from the abrupt end of his military career. But even moreso, he’s grieving over the loss of his independence and plans for the future.
Micah Sawyer has also returned to Chester Falls to take over his grandfather’s veterinary practice. Micah’s shy and awkward, at least with people. With animals, he’s in his element, confident and at ease. Due to a confluence of events in high school, Micah became the target of bullying due to his weight and sexuality. Ostracized by his peers, he folded in on himself and tried to become invisible. He determinedly focused on his studies and his infrequent attempts at dating sputtered out. Almost a decade later, Micah is still a virgin and his self-deprecation over that fact, as well as his appearance, remains strong.
Santi and Micah make an improbable match, but they absolutely work as a couple. Complete opposites on the outside but kindred spirits on the inside. Ms. Ashley doesn’t allow this romance to fall into trope predictability because she adds dimension and depth to Santi and Micah’s relationship. She creates a lovely dynamic between them, with each needing something that the other unreservedly supplies.
She also uses Santi and Micah’s relationship to weave an important message through the story. Appearance doesn’t matter. People should be judged by who they are, not what they look like. Happiness comes from accepting yourself and your limitations, rejoicing in the things that make you unique and special, and believing in your core that you are worthy of love. Santi’s physical limitations specifically underline this point.
Ms. Ashley also injects into the story some external conflict with Micah’s high school bullies, likely to further enhance this message. She didn’t need it, though, to convey her point. Perhaps Ms. Ashley belatedly realized this, because that thread was resolved abruptly in an unconvincing way. In my view, it ultimately detracted from the story she wanted to tell, rather than enhanced it.
On the flip side, though, Ms. Ashley surrounds Santi and Micah with a crazy crew of adorable, charismatic animals which provides a very welcome and appreciated addition to the story. Santi’s continual, unintentional adoption of animals that his Great Dane brings home is as improbable as it is hysterical. But overwhelmingly, it provides a heartwarming lightness to the story that balances out the seriousness of Micah and Santi’s personal troubles.
I would be remiss if I didn’t note Ms. Ashley’s clever twist to the title of How to Catch a Vet. This time the catching goes both ways with Micah the vet catching the attention, affection and love of Santi the vet. Or maybe it’s Santi the vet catching the attention, affection and love of Micah. Either way, it works.
Overall, How to Catch a Vet provides an easy, sweet read with endearing characters and some seriously adorable pets. The story is low on angst, and while it’s also low on steam, it’s high on found family and imparting its characters, and animals, with a feeling of belonging.
If you are looking for feel-good stories of love with a small-town vibe and colorful characters, then visit Chester Falls. You begin the series at any point; they are interconnected standalones so you can absolutely read How to Catch a Vet first. However, they’re all worth reading, so I encourage you to start at the beginning and enjoy the journey. I’m looking forward to the upcoming culminating book in the series, How to Catch a Happy Ever After, which comes out in December, to see how Ms. Ashley brings it all full-circle and closes the series out. *Originally posted on LoveBytesReviews.com
Adorable Menagerie I think this is my favourite book in the series. I adore Santi and Micah. Technically they are both "vets" Micah is a veterinarian and Santi is an army veteran. Micah's veterinary practice is struggling after the construction company he hired and paid up front went bust. Santi offers to help him out since he was discharged from the army due to his deteriorating vision. He has to come to terms with slowly losing his sight and that representation was beautiful. Micah was insecure about his looks since he's plus size and has never been with anyone before. Santi doted on him and immediately squashed his insecurities. They were so sweet together. The collection of animals was so freaking cute. The Great Dane keeps adopting other animals. Honestly the mental visual of the big Great Dane curled up with a duck and a kitten melted me. The only thing in this book that I didn't love was the parts with Micah's high school bully Christy. It was a story line that went nowhere. She's just a hater and she didn't need to be here. But I really liked everything else about it. It's just what I needed.
Tropes -Pet -Small Town -Plus Size -No 3rd Act Break Up
I can't believe that we've reached the penultimate book of the Chester Falls series! There have been so many great characters to meet along with way with some hard fought for HEAs, and Micah and Santi's are just as worthwhile. Both men see themselves as not worth having someone/being in a relationship, for their own reasons but there's no denying the attraction from when they first meet, both over the phone and in person. Santi's little growing animal menagerie needs helps and Micah, as the towns vet, is the perfect person to help the fact that Santi likes what he sees is neither here nor there. It's heartbreaking to read what they each think of themselves with Micah seeing his physique as totally off putting to others and Santi's recent diagnosis as something to be pitied but in each other they find someone to lift them up and believe in themselves. It's a real heartwarming romance, and then Tom gets involved meaning that community spirit is on the rise as well. It's great catching up with most of the men we've met across the series at some point in the story but my absolute favourite characters are Olive (Duchess Olive McPickles), Gus and Alfie. Such a fantastic, weirdly wonderful group of animals that work so well together and are the heart of the story really. Overall, this is yet another heartwarming romance from Ana Ashley with easily lovable men and great group of friends that jump in to support their friends at a moments notice. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
This book was both sweeter and darker than I was expecting Santi’s story to be. There were definitely some lighthearted elements-- for example the found family of pets is extensive, diverse, and awesome (the duck is still my favorite, but they’re all wonderful). The heart of the story, however, is the romance between Santi and Micah, and that’s very much a story about finding a partner to help you face, and blunt, the world’s sharp edges. Santi is struggling with the onset of a significant disability and all that comes with it, including the loss of his military career and plan for his life. His struggle with that felt deeply human and relatable, and it was great to see how his relationship with Micah provided both strength and support. (As an aside, I sort of wish more of that support had been evident from his brother, whose reaction was, I think, a bit odd and out of character.) Micah has issues of his own-- an animal sanctuary that’s lacking funds, a cadre of bigoted, body-shaming high school bullies who have apparently been waiting almost a decade to reemerge and make his life miserable again (not the most subtle of plot devices, perhaps, but plausible given the small town setting). As Micah is for him, Santi is an invaluable support in helping Micah to see his own worth and value, and I loved that too. Overall, it’s a romance with lots of emotion and plenty of love, so if that sounds appealing, I’d say give it a try!
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
