Glass Midnight: A Cinderella Retelling
Princess Gabriella wasn’t cursed at birth like the other royals. Although not cursed, she feels as if she might as well have been for the threat of the neighboring kingdom of Lune is ever present. Very IMAGINATIVE!!! One of the best Cinderella retellings to date. I really enjoyed this story! I didn't want it to end!!! Book three now please????!!!!! 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️

I received an eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
So it's been about a week now and I think it's time to sit down and actually detail what I thought about this. I really enjoyed it, overall! I bought TRUE PRINCESS earlier this year and have yet to read it, but I'm excited to get to it with how much fun I had with GLASS MIDNIGHT.
THINGS I LIKED
•Ellie and Wes are the heart of this story. Their banter and chemistry flow well and it's impossible not to love them.
•Odette is an unexpected favorite of mine now! Her relationship with Wes is so sweet, especially with how patient she is with his self-loathing and insistence that no one can love him. I'm still kicking myself for not realizing she was getting her own book, but now I can't wait for it.
•Bea and Broderick...when are they getting their own novella, Kayla Eshbaugh? I need details because they're too cute.
•Ellie going into hiding and becoming a serving girl for a noble family was a new take on Cinderella I've never seen before. Normally it's a stepfamily related by marriage, but the only relation the Travains had was to Bea, and Ellie had never met them before. I thought that was kind of refreshing.
•Ellie and Wes falling in love with each other as themselves while also hating each other as their titles was delicious irony that never fails to entertain me. The reveals had satisfying payoffs and I enjoyed every minute of the wheels turning in their heads.
THINGS THAT MADE ME GO "HUH?"
•Ellie's father was way too chill about the coming events, and while I understand he had Ancient Marra there to assure him that the future would be fine, I do wish he would have been better about communicating that to Ellie. Or I guess I wish he would have taken Ellie's fears and concerns into consideration more than he did? He didn't even allow her to say a proper goodbye before he died.
•Wes and Odette's uncle's curse was broken with one confrontation. It was built up and built up and then came to an anticlimactic end, which was odd given how much friction there was between him and his niece and nephew. Subplots like this would pop up and then resolve with little fanfare and no real stakes. I love subplots, but they need to have a purpose and well integrated into the main storyline.
•The worldbuilding was so detailed and I loved it...I just wish it would have been done without Ellie and Wes's inner monologues the entire way through. It didn't feel natural and became tedious.
I loved this book, and the criticism I have didn't ruin my reading experience. I'm hoping Kayla Eshbaugh's writing improves with each installment, because she's got such a creative imagination and I love how she's weaving different fairytales into the same universe and connecting them through the different curses the characters are trying to break. She's got a really great series on her hands and I'm excited to see where she takes it next.

The editing was so bad. Multiple people talked in the same paragraph, which always confuses me, and really random words were italicized throughout. The story was fine, it had a cliche plot and characters, but it was rather kiss-heavy. (I do not need two or three paragraphs of description, please and thank you!) After the first book, I thought that I would continue reading the series to learn more about the curses, but I'm done now.

I enjoyed this book so much! I would recommend it to anyone who likes clean fantasy romance! The ending was so sweet 🥹. Happily Ever Afters are my favorite. I got that in this wonderful story

True Princess was the first book I've read from Kayla. I love her writing style and was happy to find out it would be a complete series of fairytale retellings.
This second book didn't disappoint either! I loved it! And I was pleasantly surprised that this second book showcased a different side of Kayla's writing style. It was different from the first book. Both were very good and that means I can't wait for the next books to come so I can discover more!
The characters were lovable (even if Wesley is afraid he isn't) and well written! And I loved the banter between Ella and Wes!
Gabriella (Ella) isn't the typical Cinderella. She is smart and fierce, she isn't afraid to speak her mind and knows how to use a dagger.
But at the same time she is kind and sees the good in people.
Wesley (Wes) is very mischievous, but kind. And he doesn't only wear a physical mask but uses his mischievous behaviour also a bit as an emotional mask. He is afraid he's unlovable and that no-one will love the real him.
Until he meets her....
This was a wonderfull Cinderella story filled with magic, humor, romance and also friendship. I loved that the relationship of the main characters wasn’t the only important relationship, but there were also relationships between friends and family.
The story has some great twists woven together with some original elements. It fitted perfectly!

I would recommend Glass Midnight to all the Cinderella fans and fans of sweet fairytale retellings out there!

I really loved this book! It felt like Romeo & Juliet met a fun, cute, magical new version of Cinderella in the best of ways. One that includes hidden identities and masked balls. What's not to like right?! All the ties to the classic are subtle--the author has such a big imagination!--so every time you find a link feels extra special ✨
Seriously, l finished this in only a few sittings because I fell in love with the characters. They were silly and at times naive which made their young age more apparent. It reads like a fairytale through and through, and might just be my favorite retelling I've read up to this point! I NEED more Wes and Moonbeam please!!! 🥹

I cannot express enough how much I loved this book!! The plot was original but I could see hints from different Cinderella movies, which I also loved! Think Ever After and disneys live action Cinderella. This book had hidden identities, a swoony hero, and a brave heroine. Wesley’s relationship with his twin sister was so precious! I have a soft spot for twins so it was so sweet watching them interact. Also I really hope sir Thomas gets his own book!! I read this book in 11 hours, I might add. There’s a couple benefits to being sick. I COULD NOT put it down!! And now onto my favorite part of the entire book, the ending. I LOVE a dramatic ending!! And boy was that a dramatic ending!!! The author could not have written it better!!

This was a great addition to The Cursed Kingdom Chronicles! I loved this retelling of Cinderella so much and I enjoyed getting to see one of the kingdoms that sided with the Ancients and don't get curses. I love Ellie and Wes's banter so much and their romance. They really were made for each other. I'd read Willow and the Harvest Moon before reading this and it was great seeing some of those characters in this book as well. I enjoyed seeing both the curses in this book getting broken and I can't wait for Odette's story! She was definitely one of my favourite characters and I love how support and devotion to her brother. I can't wait for her happy ending!

I didn't like it, it hadn't really have any depth and it was more full of Lust than love... I don't think I'll buy the other stories for in the first and in the second book the love was similar, just don't feel how they fell in love exactly 😅. Other than that I give it 2 stars it wasn't totally bad it had some good plot about the identities of the prince and princess and the creativity to think and retell a story in such a new way and characters!

Glass Midnight is the second book in her fairytale retelling series & as ive said before, IM OBSESSED.
I love the way the author creates her characters. I love the story and the world building. Reading this series has felt like watching a princess movie for the first time again. I love it and them and I cant wait for the next installment!!!

I think I loved this book more than the first! Wesley was everything I could wish for in a man - flirtatious, handsome, and so very funny! I loved Ellie and Wes together. I loved how they both hid their true selves. This version of Cinderella was so intense and so very captivating. I wish I could put a million quotes and things I loved about this book, but I won’t. I just loved it so much!

The wondrous setting of glowing flowers, magical pumpkins and castle ruins stole every giggling nerve of mine.
While odd elements, irritating dialogues and the typical heated kisses all set a clear dislike for me, this book evoke such a fairytale wonder that not liking it is no option.

Review:
I loved this sweet Cinderella retelling! I loved that both characters needed ‘saving’ throughout the story while also keeping a lot of the original tale’s key features. I loved how the step-family aspect was woven in to fit and still make sense with the differences added to this Cinderella. I loved the friendships that both characters had (outside of each other). I loved that Wes’s best friend helped him by letting him let off some steam by playing pranks on him and just being a general nuisance. I loved that Odette and Wes had such a close relationship with each other (and I am so excited to see how Odette’s curse/story plays out when it comes!). I loved that Ellie’s best friends were also her literal closest companions and that neither of them really wanted to leave her side. I loved their loyalty to her and their willingness to go with whatever Ellie impulsively chose to do. Some of my favorite scenes/moments in the book included: dancing in the ballroom ruins, exploring the ruins, Wes meeting the king of Solea, their meeting in the garden, sneaking around the palace, Wes swapping with his knight, and when Wes comforts Ellie.
Summary:
Solea hasn’t had to worry about a curse falling on their royals since they sided with the Ancients during the war. So Princess Gabriella has a fairly simple life in comparison to most of her peers, but Solea instead has to worry about attacks from her sister kingdom, Lune. They may have once been one peaceful kingdom, but the war split them and caused much strife between their people. Gabriella is said to be able to fix this fissure when she marries her true love, if only someone would tell her who it was…

This is definitely a different take on the classic Cinderella tales.
I love that we got to learn more about the fey and ancients that inhabit terra and what life is like for the kingdoms that sided with the ancients in the great war. We also got to see the kingdoms of Lune and Solea and learn more about their cultures - both the similarities and differences.
Gabriella was a great heroine - completely different to Elisianna. She has that kindness that the original Cinderella is known for as well as a strong sense of duty and love for her kingdom. She accepts Wes as he is and even encourages his mischief. She is also human and has flaws: she acts rashly and can be judgemental of others, especially the cursed kingdoms.
Wes is an endearing character - I loved him in true princess with his sense of fun and mischief. He always makes me smile. The fact that he has all these qualities in spite of the death curse hanging over him shows his strength of character. He does have insecurities, especially over whether anyone will be able to love him. However, he doesn't let them stop him from fighting for what he wants - Ellie. He accepts all of Ellie, particularly her ability with blades and her talent at dancing.
I love how Kayla incorporated elements from both Perrault and the Brothers Grimm versions of Cinderella. Perrault's version has the fairy godmother, glass slippers, and the step family being forgiven, whilst the Grimm version has the three balls and golden slippers.
We also got to see Teddy again - he wasn't too helpful in this story either but I am hoping that he will grow up over the rest of the series so he can earn his own happy ending. He did however give us more hints at Gideon's curse and his connection to the sleeping princess of Thorn. Luckily 'Spindled Slumber' isn't too far away and from the sounds of the epilogue we will be seeing Gideon in the 'Fairest One', so hopefully we'll get more hints of his story then.
This was a brilliant and unique telling of Cinderella with a beautifully developed love story. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in this series.
I love that we got to learn more about the fey and ancients that inhabit terra and what life is like for the kingdoms that sided with the ancients in the great war. We also got to see the kingdoms of Lune and Solea and learn more about their cultures - both the similarities and differences.
Gabriella was a great heroine - completely different to Elisianna. She has that kindness that the original Cinderella is known for as well as a strong sense of duty and love for her kingdom. She accepts Wes as he is and even encourages his mischief. She is also human and has flaws: she acts rashly and can be judgemental of others, especially the cursed kingdoms.
Wes is an endearing character - I loved him in true princess with his sense of fun and mischief. He always makes me smile. The fact that he has all these qualities in spite of the death curse hanging over him shows his strength of character. He does have insecurities, especially over whether anyone will be able to love him. However, he doesn't let them stop him from fighting for what he wants - Ellie. He accepts all of Ellie, particularly her ability with blades and her talent at dancing.
I love how Kayla incorporated elements from both Perrault and the Brothers Grimm versions of Cinderella. Perrault's version has the fairy godmother, glass slippers, and the step family being forgiven, whilst the Grimm version has the three balls and golden slippers.
We also got to see Teddy again - he wasn't too helpful in this story either but I am hoping that he will grow up over the rest of the series so he can earn his own happy ending. He did however give us more hints at Gideon's curse and his connection to the sleeping princess of Thorn. Luckily 'Spindled Slumber' isn't too far away and from the sounds of the epilogue we will be seeing Gideon in the 'Fairest One', so hopefully we'll get more hints of his story then.

A lot of the curses in the series seem tied to this idea of loving someone for who they are, and not what they look like, which is lovely.
Wesley and Gabriella are cute together, but I do wish Wesley discovered more about her than her looks. While he seems to recognize more, it’s the only thing he comments on. As for Ellie, she repeatedly states she has to kiss her true love, but despite having kissed Wesley, he can’t possibly be it. However, we’re never told why. Why couldn’t he be her true love? There’s zero reason for her to believe otherwise.
At the beginning of the story, we’re introduced to Ellie as being a spy and good with daggers, but she never uses either of those skills for anything more than venting. She also switches from hiding her dagger in her boot (good) to her inner thigh (ouch?).

ARC Review, Cinderella story
The second book of The Cursed Kingdom Chronicles is inspired by the Cinderella story.
Thanks to her ancestors' support of the ancients, Princess Gabriella (Ellie) of Solea wasn’t cursed at birth. The neighboring kingdom of Lune has been an enemy for so long that Ellie was trained to be skilled the blade as well as balance, stealth, and blending in. She is so devoted to her father and her kingdom that she is nearly overwhelmed in her responsibilities as a Princess of Lune.
Prince Wesley (Wes) of Lune's curse requires someone to love him for himself, not his crown. He wears a mask to keep his identity secret, at his uncle's urging, in the hopes that he will find someone who will love him for who he truly is. After hiding his face his whole life, he doubts anyone will be able to see him for himself and not for his crown. I liked Wes, even with all the pranks he played, especially on his guard, Sir Thomas. His character has a chance to understand and grow into the crown prince he needs to be for his kingdom.
Ellie and Wes were delightful together. It was so nice to see their romance blossom. The Cinderella tale was woven into this story nicely. I enjoyed this book very much. It is a clean romance, though there are dark undertones within, but not unsuitable for younger teens.

Kayla Eshbaugh takes a unique twist on this tale that you likely haven’t experienced yet. While maintaining some of the very important main staples and themes, she creates an original version that is her own.
The leading male and female start out with a not so romantic meet-cute, followed by snark banter! But it’s not quite your average “enemies to lovers”. It’s clever, funny, and has sad moments that will have you really feeling for the characters and worried about the outcome.
The cover artwork is also stunning! As our all of the books in this series. What’s great is that all the books can be read as standalones, but at the same time, if you do read in order, you’ll recognize some familiar characters and stories referenced from previous books. In my opinion I love to read in order to avoid any potential spoilers! So I’d recommend reading it that way.
All that being said, I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who loves romantasy, fairytale retellings, kisses (but not too spicy), and curse breaking!
I love the world it’s set in and how all the stories relate in the same way.
Overall, I rate this one:

Best retelling of Cinderella to date!
Ellie is from Solea, one of the only countries not cursed by the Ancients for a war the humans started a long time ago. They revere the Ancients and heed what is said. In search of evidence the neighboring country, Lune wants war, she sneaks over the border and that's where the adventure begins!
Prince Wes, we met in book 1. He's hilarious! And in book 1 he's in love with Moonbeam. Not only do we learn who this is but how the endearment came into being. he has weeks/months left before his 21st birthday or he dies. It's his curse. He has to make someone fall in love with him and not the crown.
This is a delightful read! The banter, the betrayal, ok so there's no betrayal but the curses! I found myself flying through this one and although we all know HEAs are expected kept me wondering (yes, I knew the outcome) how it would all end!
Disclaimer: clean-like squeaky, fun, clever, magic, curses, stunning dresses, and gorgeous countrysides! Some very passionate kisses, knife threats, and tree-dancing partners (read it!) It was overall a quick and very cute read! So, far, this is my favorite in the series. Granted I've only read 2 books. Onto the next!

A Cinderella retelling? Yes please! It's a tale that's been told so many times and in so many different ways, and I loved this one too. Ellie was already royalty, Princess Gabriella of Solea, but after her kingdom was attacked and her father captured, she had to disguise herself as a maid in the enemy kingdom of Lune. I loved that twist.
I also felt like it had a Beauty and The Beast element to it in that Prince Wesley of Lune had to wear a mask and his curse would only be broken if someone fell for him as he was and not because of his title before his twenty-first birthday.
Wesley was such an incorrigible flirt, always making it his mission to annoy Ellie and distract her from her worries and fears. The clock was ticking on his life, but he was patient with her all the same.
I kept turning the pages just to see what would happen next. It was also wonderful to see other characters from book one. I'm so excited to read about the rest of the royals 💃🏾

Prince Wesley is cursed to die when he gets to age 21, unless someone loves him for himself rather than his position. His uncle's way of dealing with this is to make him always wear an enchanted mask, so that no one knows what he looks like. Given that his uncle won't let him go out without the mask, I don't think that he thought this one through properly. Of course Wesley does go out one evening without his mask, and meets Ellie (alias Princess Gabrielle of the neighboring kingdom that his uncle has just invaded).
I like the books in this series so far, especially because the curses demand that people get to know each other properly, rather than falling in love with some beautiful person at a ball. Of course, as is true of so many books, there are no plain people, only good looking ones. My favorite quote is from Ellie - "being called beautiful isn’t something I’ve earned or accomplished. Being beautiful, or not, is out of my control, and so, I dislike compliments like that.”
I loved the surprise appearance by Teddy.

So cute!
Okay, wow. This was a completely new take on Cinderella. Yes, Ellie was kind but she was no push over. She made plans, knew how to wield a knife, talked back to the Prince, and put her people first.
In this version Ellie was a princess in her own right and had problems to face and a true love to find lol
Both she and the prince had a snag on their plans when Wes falls for maid and she falls for a knight when they are supposed to fall for each other 🙀
The readers know more about the issue than they do, which makes it both more frustrating and more fun for us haha
Ellie, with all her good traits did frustrate me a bit when she withheld information from Wes, made my heart hurt for him 💔 But overall their story was just so sweet, and cute and funny and I just couldn't get enough of them together 😍
While Wes did seem a bit immature, he sure seems to know how to use his lips well 🙊😹 Swoon worthy romance in my book hehe

Ellie is the princess of Solea and trained to sneak and spy. Ancient Marra knows who her true love is and her father sent her to Lune, to see what she could learn. She stumbles upon a rather ridiculous man in the moonflower fields and soon develops feelings for him. Lune attacks and takes her father captive, forcing her to hide in Lune.
Wesley is the masked prince and has a death curse. He never expected to fall in love until a girl fell over him during the midnight moon. When he realizes hes in love with her, he wonders if she could love him too. When his uncle attacks her kingdom, he struggles to do what he can to help her king. But can she ever love him for him?
A very inspiring retelling of Cinderella. The banter was positively amazing. Must read!

This is a rather unique Cinderella retelling, but I didn’t like it nearly as much as books 0.5 and 1. It is significantly cheesier, while also having a slow and meandering pace. I enjoyed this book so much! I liked the dialogue and playful banter between the two MCs more in this one than I did in the first book of the series. Cinderella retellings are pretty common, but I still enjoyed this one despite having read several other Cinderella retellings before! I like the world building and magic system in this world and will definitely continue the series!
I’m dying to find out what happens with Odette and Damien too, but I don’t see that happening in the next couple of books. I’m rooting for their book to come out next! Odette might be my favorite character in the whole series!

I love the world the author has created! I am always down for a good fairy tale retelling, and I really enjoy her takes on the princess and the pea and Cinderella. The characters are fun and have good chemistry, though I agreed with Ellie when she was mad at Wes for not telling her vital information at the end. Idiotic decision really. I do think that the book isn't quite woven together enough. I felt important information was given randomly and at convenient moments instead of being woven throughout the book. I felt like we were told a lot of information instead of being shown it. If the story was woven together more, this would be a 5 star book for sure!
