Dark Soul #2

Dark Soul Vol. 2

Rate this book
The second volume in the Dark Soul series features the stories "Dark Whisper" and "Dark Night."

In "Dark Whisper," Gianbattista may have broken Silvio's heart and sent him off to the States, but he's still just a phone call away. When Silvio returns from a sex shop with a bag full of goodies, Gianbattista can't resist topping his boy one more time, even if they are 4,000 miles apart.

In "Dark Night," the Russian problem comes back to haunt Stefano, and when a dark encounter leaves him bloody and broken, Silvio knows just the right way to ease his pain.

It seems the 5 volumes were condensed to 3 longer volumes.

Okay so far there is:

Infidelity but that’s expected because the blurb stated that one of the MCs is a married man.
There’s a gang bang. One of the MCs gets fucked by a group of men (there’s a reason behind it but still…).
There’s incest. One of the MCs has sex with his brother.

There isn’t much in the development of a relationship between the MCs yet. Stefano is definitely smitten with Silvio. Silvio is complicated and strange, but damn I love him!!!

Surprisingly, I’m still enjoying the series so…on to the next.

Vol.2 was good. I didn’t love it but I liked it. Silvio is still confusing me but I guess I’m getting used to him somehow. What the hell do you feel for Falchi?!

And Stefano, do you remember you are not single? Just asking in case you forgot about that wife of yours that you love so much! Whatever, I don’t even mind cheating on books but you’re also confusing me.

Who the hell is Diego?!

I have more questions now and no answers, NIENTE!

BUT, overall I enjoyed this instalment because I love the way the author tells the story even if he keeps confusing me.

Onto the third one, I need to know what happens next.

Wow. I really liked this one way better than the first!

✔ The second book started with a bang and didn't stop there.💣⚰
✔Loved the addition of Franco to the story, complex character, interesting, not to mention the forbidden aspect of it that was brought by him. 😈
✔Donata was a pleasant surprise. Kudos to her for facing the problem, and so far, keeping it together. 🙌🔝
✔Stefano still needs to show who he is . The only thing about him I can grasp is his conflict regarding Donata. A cheater with a conscience. I am really digging all his struggle. *rubbing hands*

✔Now, sweet baby jesus! thanks for Silvio!!!!

Silvio with that Idon'tfuckingcare attitude, a little touche of delicious cross-dressing, no limits, no filters, untamed, fearless, is hot.
Hot. Period.
With whomever. (Peeps will need an open mind 😬, or else.)

✔What the hell was that end?!

Straight to the next!

OMG another great book from Aleksandr Voinov.

I cannot believe I have only just been introduced to this author. I am already completely addicted to his way of writing and his characters.

The books are very short, which doesn't bother me as I can keep track better. But the story is fast faced and full of tension, anguish and heat.

Silvio does not disappoint yet again and I love his dark, mysterious character. He is definitely my NUMBER 1 bad boy.

This vol was even better than the first - and mainly because of the Dark Night section. I'll explain more in a second. But first, Silvio. Mmmmmmmm

And his gun.
Why is there an Uzi on the cover when this gun is so beautiful?

**Battista doesn't get a picture. I want him to go away.

!SOME SPOILERS!
The lst section, Dark Whisper, was hot despite primarily involving Battista rather than Stefano. We get Silvio's perspective and find out more about him. He's dyslexic. He likes pain better with another person. He finds comfort in Battista.
- "Gianbattista's voice wrapped him in love and grace and safety when all those were tenuous and illusionary."

The best parts of Dark Whisper imo involved Stefano. He finds Silvio asleep and naked on the couch after phone sex with B, the dildo just chilling like a villain next to him. No big. Silvio showers, and then Stefano gives him a new gun, which appears to be a thank you, as Stefano doesn't want Silvio paying him for it.
- "I wanted to give you this in person. They'll customize it, like your original weapon....You're taking care of my problem."

Then we get this exchange, about Silvio...taking care of himself:
- Stefano didn't take his eyes off him.
"What were you...imagining?"
Silvio smiled and glanced back to the couch. "Maybe I'll tell you one day." Ask me again when you're inside me and I might even whisper the truth.

*thunk*

The 2nd section, Dark Night, gets into Silvio and Stefano's relationship. This is where I started caring more about Stefano. (Silvio of course had me hooked the second he first appeared.) I was also surprised how much I didn't like Vince getting injured. How did Voinov get me to care about a character who did little more than react to a rough sex scene in Vol 1? I’m flabbergasted, really.

After Stefano gets beat up by Russians, Silvio takes care of him in a surprisingly gentle, even sweet, way. Simple words and touches between the characters express their affection for and comfort with each other. I became very gushy with my status updates at this point, quoting all the subtle and seductive lines I loved.

The part where Silvio tries to coke up Stefano made me laugh. Silvio does not like to see his man in pain apparently. Speaking of pain...

My favorite part, after the attempted blow job, addressed Silvio's desire for pain, which I find fascinating, just as much as Stefano's desire for control.
- "It's...good, Silvio. Leave it." Hurts too bad.
Silvio glanced up to him, but rather than moving away embarrassed or frustrated, he placed a kiss on Stefano's thigh and rubbed his face so gently against it that the movement didn't jolt him. Stefano touched Silvio's neck, stroked the short-shorn hair there.
Silvio glanced up at him."You're really not a masochist."
Stefano laughed and winced. "No. No, I'm not."
"That's okay. I'd likely have come from the pain."
God, Silvio, who messed you up so bad that you even know that about yourself?

In summary, I loved it. The emotional impact of this volume is what made it great to me.

Ask me again when you're inside me, and I might even whisper the truth.

Dark Soul Vol. 2 pales compared to Dark Soul Vol. 1. It left me oddly dissatisfied (no pun intended). Aleks, don't take it personal because it's only my irrelevant opinion. :D

BE AWARE, MY REVIEW IS SOMEWHAT SPOILER-ISH.

Admittedly, the phone sex between Silvio and the very unpopular Battista was pretty hot, however, what spoiled this little read for me was the fact that I had to suspend belief a few times. The mean Russians were beating the s*it out of Stefano. As it was expected Silvio came to pick him up, but he did not feel the need to call 911. Oh well, maybe bad guys don't call 911? And Stefano simply refused to go to the hospital--the poor guy could hardly move anymore. To top everything off, there was no police to be seen either. No questioning, no investigation…nada. Rien ne va plus. Oh, wait…no, I really do need some icing on my cake! I couldn't believe my eyes when Silvio and Stefano tried to get it on after this nice little incident--I'm being ironic. *rolls eyes* Ah, yes, this is fiction, right?

"Maybe it's because they say you never forget the first one. I sometimes like to think that whoever you f*cked after me, there'll still be an echo of me in your bed. Or wherever you take them."

Battista, you ornery, possessive, sick, jealous bastard. Grrrr…You ditch him and then you can't let go.

As expected the writing is very good and I still like Silvio and Stefano. Onwards to Dark Soul Vol. 3!

That goddamned painting that shows me how I was, how I still am deep inside: a thing of shadows.

Dark Soul 2 is even shorter than book one, only 40 pages short, and I'm on the verge of getting bitchy about this. I still don't feel like I'm getting the full picture. And now that the number of pages is seemingly cut into half with every new book..argh! Of course I then come across an adorable part again..

"Damn if that wasn't the most affectionate thing he'd heard in ages from somebody who was not his wife. He fought the choking feeling in his chest, forced himself to breathe evenly and not betray what was going on inside him. He was the boss; he simply couldn't be weak."

And even though the occasion for it is a gone lame, I suddenly feel so very forgiving and ready to buy yet another installment of a story that has so much potential and is so intense and well-written. So all is good for now and I'm moving on to book 3. I've been told a very interesting man named Franco will make an appearance in this one.

Because of this I will do a review as a whole on Dark Soul Vol. 5 I have also rated the series as a whole rather than individually.

Vol.2 has pulled me in deeper, and Silvio and Stefano are now officially ingrained in my heart! There is such depth to these characters. Nothing is black or white as Stefano not only struggles with his attraction to Silvio. But as a faithful man, he also struggles with his desire to cheat on his wife.

Battista makes a cameo!
Battista
Gianbattista was gorgeous and the most attentive lover any man could want-charming, extremely educated, and often very funny.

Silvio struggles with unrequited love
Silvio
"What else is there to me?"
"Your bravery and your loyalty, your passion for the moment."Gianbattista's voive wrapped him in love and grace and safety when all those were tenuous and illusionary. He didn't often like to be fooled or played, but with Battista it didn't matter what was real or fake.
I dont care as long as you love me.

Vol.2 is fast paced and action packed, yet Voinov manages to add heart wrenching emotions to the mix!
He cried until his eyes hurt and he was simply too exhausted to continue, toneless, still too aware of his surroundings and the company. He'd have gladly killed to be able to cry against somebody's chest or shoulder, to just be held and told it was okay to be scared.

I'm not telling which character that was. You'll have to read Vol.2 to find out!
I can't start Vol.3 fast enough!!

How am I supposed to rate this? It riled me up even worse!!!! Argh!!!

Seriously. These stories feel like snapshots, Polaroids capturing Silvio and Stefano's moments, but with all the fine emotional nuances and the details of a work of fine art.

Where I heard Therapy? in my head while reading the first installment, paintings of Edvard Munch popped in my head while devouring this one.

Overseas orgasm. Brutal beat-down. Forbidden fire.
I was swerving, weaving and unstable from the first book and hoped to be grounded in this next volume….
I’d be lying if I said I’m on even ground again.

First part begins with a phone call….

My revulsion for the man grew tenfold. Can he please go away and not come back? Ugh, he makes me sick!
Silvio…I still don’t know how to take you. Truly, you are a mystery to me.
*deep breath*
I have survived the creepy old man and frankly, I'm nervous for what's around the corner….

*whew, wipes brow*
The second part was considerably better for me…
Exhilarating, nail-biting, and the action I’ve been looking for.
Sexual tension permeates the air and I’m anxious for it to explode, and a huge mushroom cloud is what I feels-a-brewing.
Still not entirely thrilled about the wife off shopping overseas, but I am edging that aside for now and looking forward to the revenge against the Russians.
If it wasn't for the brilliant writing and perplexing characters, well I'm afraid I would have jumped ship already.
Here’s hoping I can avoid any future riptides and keep my head above water....

More, please!

In the first part of this installment, I liked seeing something more of Silvio, even if I don't feel I really learned something more about him, and that's not something bad. His relationship with Battista really made me wonder. Silvio was clearly an old soul, older than his biological age when he met Battista, but since Battista liked Silvio's young age, his young physical appearance, it was as if Silvio's growing up as an individual was hindered and limited by the older man's sexual preferences. Silvio is still hurting for what he feels is Battista's rejection, but this is also his chance of becoming a man in every aspect of his life and being close to Stefano gives him a new place, and I also think the possibility of cultivating the real Silvio. Battista's decision of sending him away seems like the last precious gift of a lover: freedom.

In Dark Whisper, the last sentence was so full of promise and anticipation, so intimate and sensual that not even a full detailed sex scene would have achieved that intensity. Wow.

In the second part of this installment, Stefano is abducted and beaten by the Russian mob and later Silvio comes to his rescue. I think I had a different impression of Stefano, but I like him more after this part of the story, because he is not perfect: he is not above renouncing his pride to save himself and he doesn't make excuses for what he could be doing to his wife. He says times and again that he is in love with Donata, I doubted this in the beginning, but I believe him now and, at the same time, I am curious about the kind of love he feels for his wife, but it's as if Donata represents a sort of sane kind of love (I am using sane not implicating a moral judgement, but because it seems a love he can manage somehow). What he feels for Silvio is an insane kind of love attraction, because it's not something he can control with his mind, it involves something primal, instinctual, something that comes from his guts.

While Stefano is readying his organization to go to war against his Russian rivals, he is exposed to Silvio's seduction, which seems selfless and innocent in a way. I don't know why Silvio, so ruthless, so sexual, looks like an angel to me.

And that kiss...

Looking forward to #3!

another entertaining addition to the dark soul series.

it's really interesting seeing the dynamic between silvio and battista and how their relationship differs from silvio and stefano's. i'm enjoying silvio's character a lot (voinov's ability to consistently create distinct and memorable characters should be studied); he's a bit unhinged, but moments like him ditching a hookup to rush to stefano's aid really displayed his protective nature. him comforting stefano without requiring the gratification of sex afterwards really showed me another layer to his extremely complex character. stefano's respect for himself as well as his obvious regard for the people around him like his wife, staff members, and silvio make him easy to like as well.

the book's semi-dark tone meshes perfectly with the story voinov is telling; there are also some more lighthearted quotes littered throughout that made me smirk.

"Of all the things he’d put up his ass, the Desert Eagle had been a novelty. The only use for that ridiculous gun, too. Who shot with that apart from movie hit men and fucking ugly gangster rappers?"

“Go on, take [the call],” she said. “It might be important.” A lift of the eyebrow indicated he was on dangerous ground. How easily women could lure you into a situation and then slap you down when you only did what they told you.

i love that this series is comprised of novella-length installments, yet readers are given a good amount of new information in each one. it's easy to breeze right through them. i came across lenore's review and definitely agree with this quote from it: "These stories feel like snapshots, Polaroids capturing Silvio and Stefano's moments, but with all the fine emotional nuances and the details of a work of fine art."

can't wait to dive into the next one to see how stefano deals with the russians, how silvio and stefano's relationship unfolds, and what role battista will play in everything.

I don't know if the following can be classified as a "review". This is just my personal impression and my own thoughts, and I am certainly not trying to convince anyone whether this is a good or bad read.

***

This is getting betterer and betterer! Forgive my English, but I am under the influence of a truly amazing work here @.@

I love books about mafia, even if it's about very evil Russian mafia (and they are, usually, they are). This is also the first book ever for me that contains phone sex scene that's not only readable but also enjoyable. Loved the ending, the fact that even the toughest mafiosi need a human touch and compassion. A lot of "mafia" books are lacking in that particular department.

Also have to mention the use of Italian. There is enough of it in the books to set the right atmosphere, yet at the same time simple enough (and sparse enough) to make the dictionary trips unnecessary.

Looking forward to the third book. Nothing like a beautiful lethal woman turning out to be a beautiful lethal guy. Perfect series in every way possible =)

Vol 2 was WAY too short! Gack...I need more than these teasers! :)

3 things I loved about this volume:

*Phone call between Gianbattista and Silvio - so erotic, yet so heartbreaking
*Stefano's need for Silvio to take care of him after his run-in w/ the Russians & Silvio's gentle yet firm way of doing it
*This quote had my lol'ing: "'I was about to fuck him.' 'Not the other way around?' 'His dick was too small. But you're a grower, aren't you?'"

God, I adore Silvio.

Now, what I NEED from Mr. Voinov:
*More background on Silvio. I need to know and understand him better. Please.
*Better understanding of what Stefano means to Silvio. It's clear Stefano is obsessed w/ Silvio, but how is Silvio feeling about Stefano? Please.

I'm diving into vol 3 because I can't help myself. But, I'm sad to be that much closer to the end...

How deliciously Dark.

Firstly, I think I hate Battista. There's something decidedly unhealthy that he keeps a portrait of the young Silvio in the attic - how very Oscar Wilde.

Secondly, I think I love Silvio. There's something ethereal about him.

Thirdly, I pity Stefano. He's almost powerless to resist his powerful attraction to Silvio yet is riddled with guilt about cheating on Donata.

Wonderful stuff - full review to come when I've read all the volumes.

*** Review for the whole Dark Soul Series ***

So, I slept over it, and I still have no clue how to review this series. So bear with me, please, while I try to figure it out…

For me, at the centre of this series, stands Silvio:

Silvio’s searching for something. He always has been,” Franco murmured under his breath. “Something I could never give him.”
"What is that?” Marino leaned forward.
”A place to be himself. Somebody who accepts him as he is, darkness and all.” Franco emptied his wineglass. “Somebody who holds him and anchors him.”

So, if you want to find out if Silvio is able to find this, you should read Dark Souls, but prepare for a rough ride, please.

I’ve always been too scared for my own good and had decided some time ago that this series, this author, was something to avoid. How wrong I’ve been. Maybe I wasn’t ready, but I should have read this ages ago.

Dark Soul is the most intriguing, erotic, and suspenseful journey into the life of two men that were made by circumstance but find a way to be free and themselves.

I’m going more into detail now, so there might be mild spoilers or something you might want to avoid reading if you haven’t read the book yet. I’m adding trigger warnings at the end of my review, too.

Intriguing

I’m a sucker for unique and well-developed characters, and Silvio really stands out in this series but also beyond it. There is so much to him on the outside and the inside that it’s just fascinating to read about him or even be in his head. And since DS is written in alternating point of views, we get the full experience.

Silvio’s appearance, his sexuality, his emotions are all so far away from what is considered normal, and I personally am drawn to such people. He reminds me a bit of Alexis Hall’s Milord in Prosperity, and I think they have a lot in common. The difficult upbringing, their own code of honour, their own way of thinking, and their difficulty to forge bonds with other human beings

I admire Stefano with all his struggles, with all the risks he takes, and how he finally accepts his sexuality and love for a man. I am so thrilled that he not just ditches his wife, either, but that he tries to find a way for all of them. I admire that he overcomes all obstacles, that his pride doesn’t stand in the way of his happiness.

I am also intrigued by dubious situations, when there is no clear black and white. I mean, that’s how the world works, in my opinion. There is no easy truth and false, no right answer to everything. And we have quite a lot of greyness here: . The reasons for everything, the motivations, the circumstances, fate do not allow to easily judge, though.

Erotic

Let’s just say: OMGOMGOMGSOOOOHOOOOOOT

You seriously need to figure out what one can do
- with a rope and a gun
- at the pool
- with a phone and a glass dildo
- in the shower
- on a killing spree, being a transvestite
- with a brother
- a week holed up in a hotel room
- as a woman and two men

Disclaimer: You shouldn’t read DS on public transport. I did. It’s torture.
Also, this was my first erotica where I didn't think there was too much sex... The mixture was just right :-D

Suspenseful

For the most parts of DS, the Mafia suspense plot takes the backseat. Only the most, though ;-) It is brutal, there are killings and violence on page, but nothing I couldn’t handle, fortunately

And let’s just say, the last part of the series nearly made me have a heart attack and die a little. But not only the Mafia plot took its toll, the relationship developments had me sitting on the edge of my seat, too. I had no idea where this all was going until the last few pages. The last 5% were absolutely horrific and amazing and just the best ending ever, which is the reason I am giving 5 stars and not 4.5!

***

So, I promised you trigger warnings, right? I think some things have already become clear through my text, but here they are: .

I loved this book, everything about it, actually. I highly recommended it!

***

ETA: Re-Read, 2 months later already...

This is one of those books that, when you read them the second time around, have a very different feel to it, because you already know what is gonna happen, how it all ends. The reading experience is just not the same, but it was not less, not at all. I had time to savour, to watch out for hints. This second read felt like coming home. I'll never get the experience of the first read back, but I know I'm gonna visit again and again, and dive into something amazing, something that will comfort me, but also never get boring.

I love this series. I love everything I've told you above, still, and I'm happy.

***

This book counts for my following reading challenges 2015:
- 100 books in total
- 20 books about a marginalised group
- 8 books out of my comfort zone

☆☆☆☆☆ 5 Stefano and Silvio are Delicious Stars ☆☆☆☆☆

Oh this series just got cranked up a notch....or about 12 notches.

 photo PicsArt_1434320423923_zpsfufwpugo.jpg

Stefano has declared a war on his enemy, The Russian Mob Family. As he puts together a plan of attack, Stefano is abducted and brutally beaten by the enemy. As a one and only warning, the Russians spare his life, but tell Stefano to leave and stay gone.

Stefano barely escapes with his life, Silvio comes to help Stefano back to safety, but feels guilt for not being at his side.

As Stefano recovers from his jnjuries, he sends his wife Donata away to safety in another country.

War and revenge may be eminate, but passion and desire that lingers between Stefano and Silvio stronger than ever. Not wanting to cheat on his wife, Stefano can't fight the burning desire Silvio creates inside him.

"Lock the door. "
"Done."
"You did?"
"Always." Silvio glanced down his body. "I want to undress you."

 photo Part11_zpsa44e1vni.gif

"How long have you wanted this?"
"Ever since that night I saw you." Silvio bent down and pressed his nose to Stefano's groin, right next to his dick, inhaling deeply and sending a wave of desire through Stefano.

My only complaint......these books are too damn short!!!!

Spoiler Free - Just quotes.

Fear, isolation, longing. The gripping first scene is tender and mental and erotic as hell.

"I'll never forget turning you into a lover."

I think the term "God-father" takes on a whole new meaning when Voinov applies it. Gianbattista fills that roll for Silvio carnally, mentally and spiritually. Their profane relationship is quite intriguing and a bit wrenching. Do you want to see reparation or separation? And, who do you really feel for here? Intriguing.

"the strength and steadiness in that body -- that was exactly what Stefano craved now. That strength, that barely contained dark energy in Silvio".

Hints and teases and glimpses. Yes, this is still building into a powerfully driven, intense ride of a series. Voinov's command of character building drives my need for more. Plus, there is an underlying current of manipulation and violence that has yet to come clear.

Voinov's writing fascinates me.

“Me, I'm going to write ass-kicking trans* characters. I think I might end up writing not a single thing that is "pure" by some people's standards. Just because, and because I can.”
― Aleksandr Voinov
