After Scotland’s magic was restored, the magical population thought the worst of their concerns were over. Until a certain succubus realizes her problems have just begun and she might need a mortal’s help to survive.
‘The Succubus’s Song’ is the second book in the Office of Highland Magic series, featuring a department of academics keeping track of Scotland’s magical peoples and relics.
Mara Parker is a researcher first and a succubus second. Technically, she’s a baobhan sith, but it’s an identity she rejected long ago. When Scotland’s magic was bound, Mara found a way to live with it, swearing off men, magic, and falling in love. But now, the veil has been lifted, and her family wants her back—and that’s one song that might be irresistible, even to her.
Finley McEwan has always been accepting of whatever life throws at him. Recently, that meant learning about the existence of magic in Scotland—thanks to Fern, his sister—while playing for the Heart of Midlothian F.C. and trying to avoid an old heartbreak of his own.
Mara must protect Edinburgh from her own family and find a way to stop them once and for all. Finley is happy to help, but when Mara's family realizes her affections for him, Mara and Finley will have to work together to keep history from repeating itself.
Please note ‘The Succubus’s Song’ is an adult paranormal romance with sex scenes, graphic violence, and swearing.
Molly Tullis would have picked the Phantom of the Opera over Raoul and named her French bulldog Jean Valjean. She only believes in black clothing, red lipstick, and never turns down an iced coffee or tequila. She enjoys writing fantasy, romance, or any genre with an opportunity to insert a dark-haired, morally grey man. Her debut novel, The Romanov Oracle, was inspired by a love of history and a simultaneous desire to rewrite it with more magic.
When not identifying as an author, she identifies as a woman with bangs, finger tattoos, and a nose ring, who can tell you what planets are making you sad.

4.5 rounded up. Super fun and short little paranormal romance. I really enjoyed the plot (literally a .5 deduction bc I wish there had been a little more of it bc I actually liked it!).
Literally obsessed with Pippa from a fellow thick lady… can’t wait for her story in book 3.
I am happy to report, the writing in this one is definitely better than in the first book. I got into this series because I heard it's a good read-alike for Alessa Thorn's Wrath of the Fae series. While, I absolutely agree with that, this feels like the cheap knock-off Wish version. It does still scratch the itch though, so if that's what you're looking for, I think this is a good series to pick up.
We are right back into the world of Scottish magic and all things Fae as we enter book 2 in the Office of Highland Magic series. Buckle up for a wile ride full of action and spice.
Mara is a baobhan sith (a Scottish succubus crossed with a vampire), and has spent centuries thinking of herself as a monster. She's been fighting against her nature, refusing to give into the needlessly violent impulses favored by her family. They've been stuck in Faerie, giving Mara centuries of peace, but now with the portals back open they are ready to come knocking. Hateful families only mean one thing: bad news.
Finley is Fern's younger brother (aka our favorite sassy academic from book 1). He's been in Scotland for a few years playing football and has been doing well.... until he meets Mara on Fern's first Christmas with her mate Calum. He hasn't been able to think of anyone else, and thinks it's the return of magic (he is descended from witches after all) that has been messing with his sleep and his performance on the field. Turns out his cure might just be Mara herself.
This book has continued focus on Scottish myth, the return of characters we started to love from book 1 (Emmet loving a biscuit is my favorite thing), a blossoming spicy romance between Mara & Finley, and some badass new characters as well. We have love, we have spice, we have violence, we have badass men in kilts, and we still have notes of nerdy academia. Dive into book one and then continue right to this one to get your fix of these wonderful characters (definitely read in order).
My only complaint? It's only 175 pages! I could have happily kept reading about these characters for ages. I guess I'll just have to wait for book 3!! 😜
Oohhhhh, so glad the second in this series didn't disappoint!! So far it's been like reading my favorite urban fantasy/paranormal romances from high school with the heat level cranked to high. Absolute perfection and I'm trying to savor them and not rush through the series.
Mara had lived happily in non-magical Scotland, but now that the barrier has come down her life is turning to shambles, as her succubus family wants her back. Finley is feeling a little out of sorts now that he knows about his magical heritage and its throwing him off his game - literally, since he's a pro soccerfootballer.
I liked that Finely was the calm and sunshine one in this pairing, and that he's smart enough not to try and make himself a hero and keep Mara safe and protected. And Mara comes to realize that being optimistic against the odds is its own kind of strength, and learns to treasure Finley for that. Awwww!!
It was a quick and fun read. Felt like a fluffy romance with some spice to it. Had some interesting lore about Baobhan sith.
Main characters were somewhat flushed out while side characters were mentioned in passing. This could easily be read as a stand-alone book that didn't really tie into the previous book themes.
Because of the lack of plot, book series tie-in, depth of characters, and world building....I felt like this was more of a "meh" fun-simplistic-read-once book. However, even if the storyline wasn't as good as the first book, the writing style was definitely improved!
“There is nothing that cheese and bread can’t fix”. Never were truer words said. This is the follow up to The Fae’s Gamble and continues on with Mara and Finley’s story. I thought this was written with such heart and awareness of people’s fragility and self doubt and how that affects them. We also get more of Emmett😍.
I didn't enjoy this one. When Mara and Findlay aren't crying or having panic attacks they're having boring sex with zero foreplay. I don't know if this series is meant to be fantasy or smut but it's not delivering on either. And there is no "academia" in this one. They walk through a library a couple of times but I don't think that counts.
What can I say besides, “Mara” 🥵🥵🥵 I LOVE Mara! And, obviously, our golden retriever Himbo Finn is just as perfect as ever!! Ferrell did an amazing job of introducing new characters, keeping us engaged, and the smut 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ I mean, she is a succubus after all 😏
FINALLY an author who writes a MMC with true vulnerability who doesn’t fix himself FOR the FMC but is already working on himself. I’m so in love with these two this has been my favorite of the series so far!
Adorable character relationships. Also super sexy.
There are some plot issues where I think it'd be great drawn out (in both this and the last novel), and some editing issues that cause some confusion with plot and characters.
I liked it a lot more than the first one! I'm absolutely in love with Mara and Finley, they are so cute together! And do we wanna talk about that ending??? I can't wait to read the next book!
