This book really is a tour de force.

My interest is in the underlying sacred geometry of the cathedral, and there is heaps here. The underlying unit of measurement and its derivation, proportions related to musical notes, link with other gothic cathedrals and older sites of geomantic worship, these are just a couple of examples off the top of my head.

The book also has a huge amount of historical material about Knights Templar, the Ark of the Covenant, and theories about who built Chartres and why and how. I have heard too many new age alternate history stories to take any of them seriously at this point (a triumph of misinformation campaigns perhaps?) but you will be well served if these are to your liking.

The author does a very good job of packing in a huge amount of material that will be satisfying to many different flavours of readers, though materialists will of course be offended at the very existence of this tome ;-)

My goodness! The grail, the Knights of St John, the Black Madonna, it's all in here. I read this back in the 80s and remember it as awesome. All the churches in northern France dedicated to Notre Dame all form the constellation Virgo. Insane!

Readers of history with an interest in factual mysteries will truly enjoy this non-fiction book by Louis Charpentier. I have waited to read this book for a long time.

It took a long time to finish because it is detailed with important information about the famous cathedral and because of delays from my work schedule.

Gothic cathedrals have long been a fascination of mine, so to finally read this book was an utter thrill. Even though published in the 1960's, the author presents critical information about Chartres that many historical presentations overlook.

Furthermore, Charpentier offers some answers to the mysteries of the cathedral and Gothic architecture in general. However, some mysteries remain unanswered, such as where did the technological knowledge come from in order to build these magnificent structures? Who provided the funding? Why did it take decades to build? (The Forbidden City in China, another marvel of construction, took a mere four years.)

If you are curious, then by all means read this book. Overall, it is fantastic and enlightening.

While I was reading this book, I felt like I was entering a hidden world. A world of forgotten sacred knowledge, a world of symbolism, of alchemy, of esotericism...A world when Adepts mingled with ordinary people and conducted the affairs of humanity. "The Mysteries of Chartres Cathedral" reveals all the secret knowledge that went into, not only the building of the Chartres Cathedral, but the gothic architecture in its entirety. This Cathedral is actually a book in stone. The most profound laws that govern the universe are imbedded in its building: in the measures, proportions, layout, the labyrinth, stained glass windows, choice of stone, and carvings-for those who have the eyes to see.

Some interesting, if sensational, theories on the architecture, figures, labyrinth and masonry of this fascinating cathedral.
