Jena Leigh Hawk has gone by the pseudonym J. L. Rebel ever since she took up newspaper work. To her, writing the truth is more important than anything else, and she hides her femininity behind a man's name, her beauty behind spectacles and drab clothing. But when she goes to Galveston, Texas, to uncover a very personal truth, the origins of her family, her businesslike facade begins to crack. Colonel Clay Madison seems to see right through to her heart, to the yearning, vulnerable woman she is inside. And in his arms, Jena Leigh discovers the pure joy of being female.

She says: "I have always loved history, and I loved storytelling — it was only natural that I would one day put them both together. I must have lived in another life and time, because when I write, I can almost feel I was there. My favorite part of writing is the research. Whenever possible, I will go to the place I am writing about to walk the land and smell the air."
There was a time period when a woman was not recognized as a journalist, writer or author of any kind of works. That’s the way it was in the 1800’s around the Civil War era and thank God it isn’t that way today. The heroine of this book J.L.Rebel, aka Jena Leigh Hawk, was a well respected journalist under a pseudonym and had been taught by one of the best, but she had to write as if she were a man. It leaked out here and there in the newspaper world but Jena Leigh held her own and became known all over Texas and many other parts of the country. She was trying to find her siblings and in this journey, she found the love of her life who happened to be a Yankee Colonel, Clay Madison. This is a great read and I loved every minute of the book.
Although I skipped quite a few pages up to 68% i still enjoyed the heroines independence. That fact that she's a good reporter, wealthy in her own right, and beautiful to boot made this book more bareable. She did seem really immature at first but by 58%, or there abouts, she mellowed down and we got to see more character development betweek H and h. The hero was great. No complaints for the moment.
This is the story of Jenna Leigh Hawk, one of four children separated when they were young. Jenna Leigh is an independent woman and a talented reporter. She finds herself in mortal danger. It's up to Clay to see she doesn't end up murdered. While doing his job, he loses his heart. This is a great read.
This is the best of the series so far. I do not usually read historical romance but this series has swept me up to discover the mystery of the siblings.
2.75 stars. This series is driving me a little crazy. On one hand, the writing is uninspired. I sometimes roll my eyes at how syrupy and silly it is. On the other hand, I like the stories and characters overall. I am invested in wanting to see how the siblings are all finally brought together. So {*sigh} ... trudging on to the last book....
