Pepper Brooks #6

Oliver Twisted

When Pepper and Alex get an invite to visit Professor Ferguson in England, they jump at the chance. They need a break from wedding planning, and Pepper’s always wanted to visit the birthplace of Charles Dickens. During a walking tour through London, the two become entangled in yet another murder investigation. Between the London setting of the crime and the fact that the victim was an ornery foster father, straight from the pages of a Dickens novel, Pepper can’t help but make connections to Oliver Twist. The police see a connection right away, too, taking the eldest foster child away in handcuffs.

But as the clues begin to unfold, Pepper realizes this death may connect the two cities in Dickens’s most famous novel, and that this mystery may be deeper and darker than anyone could’ve imagined.

Readers, this is the sixth and final book in a literary-themed cozy series. If you love a down-on-their-luck main character and sometimes read aloud in a British accent, then this book is for you. And if Dickens isn’t your jam, no worries; each book features a different classic author. ;) Happy reading!

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

Her first cozy mystery series, Pepper Brooks, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. Eryn's newest series is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are great for readers who love a hint of paranormal with their mysteries. These books feature a tiny town tucked between craggy coastline and rocky shores with quirky characters of both the living and non-living variety. Look for new releases from all three of these series in 2022 as well as Eryn Scott's new cozy series.

I really enjoyed this book. I am not a big fan of the classics but I am of this author, who manages to make them entertaining. Okay there wasn't that much on Charles Dickens before the mystery takes off and it was more about his life than his writing but it was actually interesting and added to the London experience. I loved the fact the story was set in England with a lot of places and locations I know mentioned. However it was the story that held my attention and would they find the killer before leaving for home. I must admit I didn't see it coming. The characters are a delight and I am saddened that this is the last outing for Pepper and Alex but it will be interesting to see what the author has in store next.
Needing to get away from all the wedding planning Pepper and Alex jump at the chance to visit London and a favourite professor who is staying there. While on A Charles Dickens sight seeing tour there relaxing tourist excursions grounds to a halt when they discover a body hanging half out a window. The police are quick to arrest the man's troubled foster child but when Alex discovers he is also the son of a fallen police officer, he can't help but feel the boy as been let down. Something he can't let stand. His mother's partner was there for him when he needed it, now it's his turn. The only way to do that is by finding the real killer. Can Pepper and Alex traverse through the English judicial system to help the troubled teen?

Clever Mystery . . .

Pepper Brooks and her fiancé Alex Valdez are in England and were invited to visit Professor Sharon Ferguson who thinks Pepper will find information to help with some of her research projects for her grad school coursework. Pepper is fascinated with Charles Dickens, so this is a perfect break from all the other things keeping her busy. They join a Dickens Walking Tour, but Pepper and Alex spot something unusual – a man appearing lifeless, hanging out of the second-story window of a building that had once been the office of “All the Year Round”, a magazine Dickens founded and wrote for. Constable Prichard and her team responded to the call, but Alex, identifying himself as a police officer back home, had already determined by marks around the victim’s neck that CPR would not be helpful.

It appears that no matter where Pepper ends up, murder is not far away. The victim turned out to be Richard, a foster parent who had four teenagers crammed into a filthy apartment. The man was not fit to care for children. As Pepper and Alex try to follow the leads, Pepper tries to envision the murder as if it were part of the Dickens novel, “Oliver Twist”, because of all the similarities. The police do make an arrest of a young teen, but can Pepper and Alex, with the help of newfound friends, find the real murderer before they have to leave for home?

This was a literary cozy mystery.

I loved this story and the characters were incredible. Highly recommend!

This final book in the series finds grad student Pepper Brooks and her policeman fiance Alex in England at the invitation of her professor Sharon Fergie Ferguson. While on a Dickens walking tour of London they find themselves entangled in a murder investigation. After seeing a man leaning on a porch railing, Alex races up to the second floor to check on him only to discover he has been unalived. The man, Richard, was a foster parent to several pre-teen and teenaged children who he kept in squallor. The oldest being Jackson Sydney who had had several arguments with Richard necessitating police intervention. He is also the son of a slain police officer. The officer in charge of the investigation Sergeant Ulrich immediately takes Jackson into custody. Ulrich and Jackson's mother worked together and hated each other. Pepper and Alex think Jackson is being railroaded and investigate the murder themselves. In between sight seeing excursions, studying in Oxford University with Fergie and investigating the murder they have a full week. The day before they have to leave, they solve the murder and get the real killer arrested.

as Alex and Pepper prepare to start the next chapter of their lives together as a married couple, their travels abroad turn up more murder and troubles

Alex has a soft spot in his heart for other children of fallen officers, and his sympathies for a troubled son of a fallen officer lead them through troubled waters far from home

the featured author of interest for this trip is Charles Dickens, and Oxford, London and the surrounding areas provide history and literature rich settings

I missed her favorite doggy companion, because of course Hamburger was not allowed along on the busy trip

beautiful and interesting backgrounds for the busy life of this soon to be wed couple of creative sleuths.

A dream trip to London and Oxford turns slightly sinister when Pepper and Alex discover a body while in the middle of a Dickens walking tour. While Pepper is usually the one to spearhead the adjacent investigation this time it’s Alex as he feels a kinship towards the suspect as both lost their mothers in the line of duty. With help from some new friends and some friends of the deceased officer the duo are determined to find who really committed the crime.
Cute and kitschy mystery. Taking place in London and Oxford the backdrop is beautifully illustrated for us. While not a typical vacation Pepper and Alex do manage to do touristy things in between finding leads. An enjoyable read and a literary experience. Hea bonus at the end.

I have been looking forward to this final book in the Pepper Brooks series for so long and it did not disappoint!

Pepper and Alex are visiting England, but they take on a new mystery after finding a dead body during a tour. I loved getting to see the two of them work together, especially with how personal the case is for Alex. The mystery had some really good twists and turns that kept me guessing until close to the end of the book.

London and Oxford were the perfect setting for this story, and it was fun seeing Alex and Pepper exploring the two cities. There is a nice amount of description of places to see and things to do in the city, but it's not so much that it took me out of the story.

I am sad there won't be more Pepper Brooks Mysteries but this was a great book to end on.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Meh

I'm finding this author to be very hit or miss depending on her main characters. I've absolutely loved some of her series and they are generally very quick reads so I've been through all but one series of hers at this point. I really enjoyed the first few books in this series; the town had a fun Gilmore Girls appeal, and I enjoyed the characters early on. Unfortunately as the main characters aged into adulthood, but failed to mature or show any character growth my interest in the series started to wane, particularly in the last 2-3 books. I still enjoyed the side characters, but as this book took place in England, most of those side characters were barely present in this one. That was a shame, since I think it's the final book in this series so it would have been nice to spend time with some of those characters one last time. The mysteries in this series (and most of this author's work) really stretch my ability to suspend disbelief, but that only bothers me if I'm not enjoying the characters and the feel of the book. It bothered me in this one.

Literally Finished is the last book in this series, but it’s just as delightful as the previous five. Taking place in London and Oxford the backdrop is beautiful. Pepper and Alex finally have a chance to go on vacation, but as usual things don’t go as planned. During a Charles Dickens walking tour, the duo discover a dead body. Alex feels a kinship with the main suspect as both lost mothers in the line of duty, and becomes determined to find the real killer. With help from some new friends, Alex and Pepper chase a series of leads around London trying to uncover the murderer and the motive. Along the way, Pepper and Alex see the sights and live HEA.

What a wonderful ending to this series. I’ve grown quite attached to these characters through the past few years and am so happy with the way it has ended.
When reading this book I truly could envision walking through London and Oxford, touring museums and spending time in pubs. Reading about Pepper, Alex and their friends, and the mysteries they solve, is everything I love in a cozy mystery. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves cozy mysteries!

I really loved this story because Alex and Pepper were great characters who are enjoying London's literary history when they come upon a murder. I think that the storyline was well done. I felt that it was unique and very entertaining. The characters felt very real to me and they fun to read about until the end of the pages.

What A Great Ending

I just enjoyed all 6 books in this series with this final one being fantastic! Of course, I am sad that I won’t read more Pepper Brooks mysteries because I have grown to love all the characters. They will live on in my mind and spirit, nonetheless!

The last in this series, which always makes me sad. But it ended in a way that is satisfying and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Pepper and her friends and family. Love her and Alex together!
