“His eyes returned to mine, that invisible tether between us strung too tight.
That magnetic pull, it was unbreakable, unyielding. Eternal.
And it demanded that we collide.”

On the secluded continent of Edenvale, possessing magic is a death sentence. Those who have it are labelled Cursed, and by order of the king, they are Cleansed—a horrific event utilizing a hot, hungry pyre and an iron collar. Enemy to the king, a group known as the Cursed rebels defend their lands from his reach, creating an ongoing, bloodthirsty war.

When Sage’s brother is conscripted for the war, she is forced to trade in her cozy, peaceful cottage life and join the Cursed rebels to get him back. Her mission seems straightforward, but Von, the leader of the Cursed rebels, comes riddled with dark secrets. With his otherworldly eyes, black as a starless night, and a taste for juicy thigh—ahem—red apples, Sage knows better than to get involved with a guy like him. But knowing and doing are two very different things.

Together with the Cursed rebels and Von, the king of inky deals and sexy, stolen moments, Sage embarks on the quest of a lifetime.

Little does she know that fate is at work and the gods are watching her every move.

For ACOTAR fans who are looking to scratch that insatiable itch.
This one is for you.

DNF at 45%. This.. is not good. Every character in this book had no personality. The MMC was basically a cardboard cut out of Rhysand/Cassian/Casteel with incredibly cheesy lines which I think were supposed to be arrogant and seductive but I was immediately cringing. You have to let some sort of tension build it’s so boring when they’re in love/obsessed with each other after speaking twice.

The FMC had absolutely no clue what was going on which meant we as readers had no clue. There was no real purpose or urgency in what they were doing- it felt like the author was just working off of a check list. There was no world building, no plot development, the dialogue between all the characters just felt so forced?

The side characters.. may as well have not been there. Nothing in this book was new, it’s just your regular cliched fantasy romance which I guess you could read to pass the time but by the next day you’ll have forgotten about it.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend but it is on kindle unlimited so you do you

Reading log

5/04
I’m at chapter 12 and it’s not going well.
Von is insufferable. The things he says are so cringy. Is he really the love interest?

A summary of my notes so far, chapters 1 - 12
- why
- ew
- no
- wtf/wtf what does it mean
- this is so cringe i want to cry
- ffs

UPDATE 6/04
chapters 13 - 26
Still not going well. Von is still insufferable. Sounds like one of those dumb, arrogant gym dudes with very little to offer to the world.

Notes taken so far:
- what century is this
- BOMBASTIC SIDE EYE
- ah.
- excuse me?
- wtf/wtf not ok dude
- consent?
- cringe
- lol
- why

UPDATE 6/04 pt 2
chapters 26 - 54
Recap of my notes:
- CONSENT!!!!!!
- lol
- why
- cringe
- BOMBASTIC SIDE EYE CRIMINAL OFFENSIVE SIDE EYE

See a pattern here? I do.
I feel bad leaving a bad review to new authors, but when you compare your book to big titles, you set the expectations quite high.

What didn’t work in this book? For me, the major thing was the MMC.
He was just the definition of cringe.
Insufferable.
Arrogant to the point of being rude.
Possessive (in a bad toxic way).
He DOESN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT CONSENT MEANS.
Every time he called her “Kitten” or “Little Goddess” I was like 🤢
I confirm my previous take on Von (what name is this) being like a dumb gym dude.

The premises weren’t horrendous, I think it had potential, but the execution… the dialogues, some of her inner thoughts and some metaphors/similes were so cringy.

Examples of great quotes that made me want to pull my eyes out of the eye sockets:
- “His features dripped with untamed masculinity”
- “He brandished a wicked smile — the kind that ended a virgin’s reign.”
- “that ass — everything about it screamed built for thrusting”
- “A windstorm of a male. The kind that sucked you in, fucked you hard, and then left you in the dust—messy-haired and wide-eyed and never the same”

Personal fav (not):
- “his divine masculinity summoning my divine femininity to break free from reservations”

In short… want to read it? Read it.
Have I read worse things? Oh, hell yeah.
I think this is one of those books you read and forget the morning after.

This book is a diluted, watery, rip my eyeballs out wanna be ACOTAR. A stick has more personality than the FMC!
The MMC is a wallmart version of Rhys which is just flat out disgusting and disrespectful to daddy Rhysand!
Looking for tension ? Don’t even bother wasting your time,

First and foremost I want to thank Jaclyn for the Arc of this book, I really wish I could have loved it. If I had not received an arc I honestly would have DNF'd this book about 40% of the way through. While I know the tiktok videos made me feel like this would be a hit, it was a massive mess. Lets start with what I liked about it though:
- The side characters are quite interesting, I really enjoyed Ezra in the beginning and her batty behavior's. I also adored the relationship between Harper and Lyra, I wish we could have heard more about it, I think it would make a good prequel novella.
- The people with magic being thought of as cursed and having to hide rather than being at the top of the hierarchy was a nice change from the more common alternative.
- The names in the book being more common and quick to pronounce made getting into the story a lot easier than other books.
What I didn't like:
- The is a severe lack of world building and the magic system is not thoroughly explained, this is partly because even the FMC has no idea what is happening.
- The MMC is supposed to come off as arrogant and seductive, immediately purring dirty things into the FMC's ear. However he comes off as cringy.
-The FMC and MMC are in insta love, part of this is because the MMC has some sort of history with her but she has no idea. The insta love doesn't make sense with the story, they seriously barely speak before she says she has feelings for him for no reason.
-The FMC is just awful. She does not question anything. She doesn't piece anything together even when other characters are basically spelling them out for her. She gets pushed into a mist and almost dies then gets told that there's some big stuff she needs to know and she just decides to go home and not ask anything. She also gets told by the MMC that they are bonded, she once again doesn't ask any questions or think twice about it. Since we are following her story, it also means the readers have no insight into anything.
-The plot is oddly paced and all over the place, its like a bunch of decent ideas are strung together with no detail and the story just ends up being boring. Everything is glossed over, no intricacy.

I think if this book was split in two, giving more of a proper world building intro and letting the characters gain some actual chemistry and time together it would really have been a good story. There is hundreds of pages of details and plot points that could have been explained. The FMC needs an overhaul, she is completely clueless and has no personality. The writing itself is not terrible, though it does read very immature for an adult book. I do think the series has promise if the story can become more defined. Overall its not a terrible book by any means, but I do fear some of the videos ive seen are making it out to be something that its not. I would give Jaclyn Kot another chance and perhaps I will love the next book she writes.

This book is the recipe for EVERYTHING I am looking for in a dark fantasy romance read:

- 1 part morally grey, mysterious AF MMC who is obviously tall (TALL), dark, and handsome
- 1 part strong, intelligent FMC who doesn't take shit from NOBODY
- 1 well-written and complex yet easily digestible magic system
- 2 generous scoops of spicy, delicious tension
- 5 servings of mystery and intrigue, to leave you in dire need of knowing WTF is going on and who you can trust
- 2-3 very large sized wrenches on the heartstrings
- Several strong and frankly UNCALLED FOR betrayals, ma'am (to taste)
- 1 rude AF Cliffhanger ending that left me needing Book 2 immediately (and luckily I already have it!!!)

Mix it all together and bake it in the oven for 419 pages and you're left with your new favourite dark fantasy romance read. Top with freshly sliced red apples. Serve immediately.

IDK what the heck is going on with me, but lately, I have been having such a hard time with romantasy books. This book gave me SO much hope with the opening chapter. Instant intrigue.

I loved the setup for the plot; the writing was excellent, and there were even some funny parts—I was itching to read the rest. But guess what lost me...

When the FMC met the MMC. Their dialogue - oh my. The cringey MMC... it was such a turn-off for me.

The weird part was the one bed chapter... the parent is sleeping next door, but the daughter is sleeping in a man's room with a stranger? I get the one bed trope, but it was just unrealistic in my head. No parent/guardian (not a good one at least) would let their daughter share a bed with a stranger. And the whole situation of her finding out the truth... it just felt very out of place.

But the male main character is definitely what's stopping me from reading the rest. Nothing that comes out of his mouth sounds natural in any way. I probably would punch the man in the throat if I were the FMC.

DNF at 29% - but might read the rest. Undecided.

Oh boy.

This went from a riveting opening scene about a community that burns witches to being a book about a girl who likes her creepy, tall stalker. The first chapter was fantastic but I slowly lost interest over the rest of the book.

Overall I think this book - if it’s intended to be a plot-focused - would have benefited from some developmental editing. The characters' motivations and personalities kept changing, the plot meandered. If it’s just setting up the reader for smutty sequels, though, it achieves that.

Between Life + Death is written by Canadian author - Jaclyn Kot. I love supporting Canadian authors! 🇨🇦♥️

This was such a great debut fantasy novel and I had so much fun reading it front to back. I definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to get into fantasy or for anyone needing a quick and easy high stakes read.

I only have 2 critiques for this book. The first is that it lacked a bit of world building. Some of the chapters faded to black and I felt as if I was instantly transported into the next area of Edenvale. I love that it was fast paced, but I would have enjoyed a bit more of the journey/adventure that explained more of the experience the entire crew had between the bathhouse, to the castle/barracks, to the cottage and so on.

My second critique would be that I would have enjoyed more character development. The story consisted mostly of Sage’s perspective, with a couple chapters in Von’s. I loved this aspect! It reminded me of Feyre’s journey and I related to Sage so much during her journey.

I understood the concept of the found family trope - however, I kept wishing I knew more of the history of this group of friends and how Ezra knew everyone prior to the conquest. I’m hoping this will be delved into further in the next book or possibly a prequel novella as it seemed rushed from the first couple of chapters. Again, I love a fast paced book - however, after Von rescued her I felt a bit lost on the family dynamic.

This is the first book in the series and I’m SO excited to read more about Sage + Von’s story! I was chuckling and kicking my feet up. Their banter is unreal. Ughhhhh loved it so much! Overall, a really fast, easygoing fantasy plot. It kept me engaged the entire time! I even wished it was a bit longer (and I don’t say that often)!!!!!

As soon as I saw the video for this on TikTok I knew immediately I was going to love it and boy was I right. This world is different but at the same time shares similar aspects and themes that I enjoy in some of my favorite fantasy series. I am a sucker for the morally grey love interest that gives you “touch her and you die” vibes. The love Von feels for Sage is apparent very quickly in the book. It was a slow burn with some spice and I loved it. I’m pretty good at guessing what will happen in a book and while at times I had a feeling I never quite saw any of it coming. This series was all I hoped for and more. Some MCs can be annoying at times but I absolutely loved Sage. The magic system in this book was interesting as well as the political system. Jaclyn does a wonderful job of creating a world that you get sucked into and I would highly recommend . Can’t wait till the next book!

Dear Jacklyn Kot, please accept the rest of this review as constructive criticism. If you cannot handle this, please do not read past the next paragraph break.

This book would really have benefited from Kot picking a year for the timeline, and then asking “Would people who lived in that year actually say this?” and choosing words that fit the ‘yes’ column. For example, words that have taken me out of the story include “coffee table”, “the gift of indoor plumbing”, “the female equivalent of blue balls”, referencing to a “body count” in terms of sexual partners, and my personal favourite, the quick throwaway line of Von knowing cheese is an “ass-clogger”. There’s all this (plus more) new age wording but they live in a poverty ridden cottage in the woods without indoor plumbing. Somehow the girls have mascara and know to “pump” the wand made of goat bristles to apply 3 layers to eyes but refer to eyeliner as ‘kohl’. The time line makes no sense.

I want to like this book because the author is Canadian and I love SK pride but I physically cannot recommend the book in it’s current state. This novel reads like someone’s first fan fiction, with the characters being mostly the same as the source material but changed just enough in hopes to not be sued. Details such as the tattoo that is a location tracker and appears because of their deal is just one of many copies. The back boasts this book is for fans of ACOTAR; however I would suggest this is the book for people to start with before reading ACOTAR as they are not on the same level for story building.

In the middle of the book we are told there is rumour of the king’s advisor coming to the bath house the next day. When the men in the bath house are not paying attention to the women but to another man clearly he is the advisor right? No it takes Sage a full page and a half with a rejection to figure this out. As well during this section, Sage needs to bring a truth serum with her into the advisor’s chambers but she is dressed with basically nothing. I genuinely thought she would insert the vial into her body but instead she chose to dab the serum on her lips before going and ended up poisoning herself. She is constantly making dumb decisions.

Also we need to discuss Von’s heritage. He is a demi god, and his sister is described with snake features. Eventually Von is described with some snake like things, but then also he has wings? Again a clear vision of what he is suppose to be (snake or Rhysand?) would really have helped this book be polished.

Sage starts off as being water cursed, which is fine. Then she is suddenly fire-cursed. Then she is reveled to be the life giver goddess? (I'm still unsure if this is the terminology provided or if I'm making that up.) So many reveals so quickly, I would assume she KNEW she could control fire if she was already able to play with water magic. But I digress. The point is she doesn't know much about anything. Oh there's also a whole arc about her getting her memories back but the biggest highlight is that she was Von's mortal enemy, they fought a war against each other, and then fell in love. It happens in like, a single page, there was no real delving into their backstory or shared memories.

I think the biggest plot for this book is that Sage’s brother gets conscripted, and she wants to get him back from the war. Such a shame that she goes through all these great lengths to track him down, then when she finally lays eyes on him he is shot and dies in her arms.

The book ends with the tragic Von is dead, what will Sage do, oh her brother is alive again and has said Von is still alive. It’s really hard to even care that any of the last 400 pages of their lives happened.

----
I posted this a few hours ago and then remembered a whole scene that I wanted to discuss, so I'm back.

By the riverside: Sage gets paralyzed by a snake, who speaks English and then implies that she will be it's 'play thing' if she is lucky. Or, she will just be lunch. She does her best to try and fight it off but it gets her good. This snake is one of the creepiest parts of the whole book as it is suggesting it's own penis has multiple heads, and therefor it can please her well. (WTFFFF this is surely a joke for shock factor right? The funniest part is I COMPLETELY forgot about it while I was typing the rest of the problems!) Meanwhile, Von shows up and does kill the snake/humanoid/shock value, and carries Sage off to safety. How did this scene not get cut? What is the significance??

I was fortunate to receive an ARC copy of this book from Jaclyn Kot and absolutely loved it.

Sage is a relatable female character whose curiosity helps the reader tap into this rich fantasy world. Her relationship to her family is a huge motivator and drives a good portion of this book.

Von is the mysterious male. He had me hooked from the first time he showed up on the page. Von gives off Ruhn Daanan vibes (Crescent City fans will get it!) while standing on his own two feet. If you wished CC had more Ruhn, this may just be the book for you!

And the ending? Man book 1 isn’t even officially released and I already want book 2!

Eta: I’ve now gone and read this through a second time and loved it as much as the first time. It’s an amazing read and I highly recommend it!

I was honoured to have been given an ARC copy of this book by Jaclyn Kot. I read the book in 2 days, which, for me is a record as I have 3 kids under 4.
I story was so well written and the characters develop so nicely that I stayed up most of the night just to finish this book without being disturbed.
Can't wait to get the physical book and also get the second in the series.

"Between Life and Death" by Jaclyn Kot is a captivating fantasy romance set in a world where being born with magic (or 'cursed') is a crime punishable by death. The vicious king's decree mandates the cleansing of those with magical abilities, subjecting them to a gruesome fate via pyres and iron collars to block said magic. In the face of this tyrannical rule, a group of rebels known as the Cursed stands defiant. Sage, one of the cursed, finds the rebellion when her brother is conscripted for the war. She is compelled to abandon her peaceful life and join the Cursed rebels to rescue him. The mission, seemingly straightforward, takes an unexpected turn as Sage encounters Von, the enigmatic leader of the rebels, whose dark secrets and otherworldly presence make him both intriguing and dangerous. There is a pull between them that just won't leave her alone.

This is the perfect blend of fantasy, romance, and adventure. I have to admit that the romance is the best part. Sage and Von's chemistry is palpable, adding a layer of tension and passion to every scene they're in together. The secondary characters are also easy to like and I eagerly anticipate the potential development of them in the next book.

Kot's world-building is commendable, revealing a rich tapestry of history and intrigue lurking in the background. The information about these mysterious rebels and Von slowly trickles out as Sage learns more. The plot's twists and turns kept me engaged and eager for more. The seamless blend of romance and fantasy elements, coupled with well-drawn characters, makes "Between Life and Death" a delightful and immersive read. I cried, and that's the highest recommendation that I can make because it means that I care deeply about these characters.

I am quite eagerly anticipating the next installment to delve deeper into the captivating world Kot has crafted. I am sure that I will devour the next as quickly as I did this one. I do want to note that I also purchased the audiobook and DEEPLY enjoyed the dual narration. Highly recommend the audio; the narrators are top-notch.

Thanks to BOMM and the author for the e-copy. All opinions are my own.

3.5 rounding up. It has potential. I wouldn’t be surprised if book two takes off!

It was very predictable but a good time nonetheless. Nothing complicated here folks, just fantasy + some spice with booktok tropes thrown in for funzies. This somehow felt like a filler book and its book one. Attempted world building but ultimately not much. The last 80 pages are where the book really started! Very interested to see where book 2 goes.

1st person POV - Sage

Tropes: adult high fantasy, enemies (ish) to lovers, forced proximity, hidden identity, fate, "who did this to you?", rebellion against the crown after years of persecution and slaughter, exploring old & new powers, open door spice w/ hot dirty talk

If you've read a ton and have found yourself looking for those hidden gems that pick you up and transport you to another world, this book is for you. There's something about these books that build their stories around you, brick by brick, like building a house while you're standing oblivious in the markings of the living room. Gradual but steadily building until you look up and realize you've been reading for 6 hours straight and the simple ink on paper you started with is now a sturdy and tangible brownstone with stained glass windows and signs of life, and you almost hate to finish the book and shatter the illusion and return to reality. This is one of those books.

Between Life and Death is the DEBUT NOVEL from Jaclyn Kot, and let me tell you, it was phenomenal. I was sucked in from page 1. The worldbuilding, the editing, the pacing, the side character's development, the chemistry/tension between our FMC, Sage, and MMC, Von... I could go on. I'd definitely classify this as a medium-burn but the intent and spark is there from the very beginning. This first book in a projected 3 book (minimum, I think) series, ends on a very mild cliffy so don't let that scare you because anyone who enjoys high fantasy with an interesting magic system and an epic love story needs to read this.

But, since this is a debut novel from a new author, I don't know when book 2 will be released. HOWEVER - don't let that stop you from supporting this author and reading this book ASAP. You won't regret it. I know it's only April, but I will be adding this to my top reads for 2023.

You found me, my heart sang.
As I promised you I would.

It is SO hard for me to not finish a book. It goes against all I stand for. But when I realized that I’d rather pick up a book that is the definition of “bleak” than this, I knew I had to call it. DNF at 78%.

The premise could have been amazing, and that almost makes me angrier than anything contained within this book. Because it was so horrifically written, somebody else can’t write a decent version of it without being a ripoff.

When I first started I actually had to come here to double check I hadn’t already read it because the opening scene was almost identical to another unmemorable KU book. The main character is unremarkable in every way except for the fact she’s not supposed to be. Von? He’s a caricature, and not a flattering one. He refuses to answer questions that would actually advance the plot, and every single comment he makes feels like a shitty Tinder pickup line. I’d block the crap out of him.

Beyond that, the pacing was disjointed (I ended up having to reread several parts because I couldn’t understand scene or time jumps— spoiler alert, it didn’t help). The whole driver for the book was tossed aside halfway through in the most unsatisfying way. I can probably tell you how it ends because the “foreshadowing” was so goddamn obvious that I honestly could’ve saved myself some time and stopped around 30%. The main character (can you tell I forgot her name already) asked all the right questions, but Von’s smug ass simply refused to answer any of them. It probably could’ve been a two chapter short story if he had.

In short, this is the book equivalent to “this meeting could have been an email,” but could have just as well not have existed at all.

I received this as an arc. my first ever one, thank you Jaclyn. I really enjoyed this book. The characters were believable, relatable and you tend to care about them really quickly , storyline progressed at a good pace, spice was just enough without being overdone or cringey. Once i started BLAD I was unable to put it down. Jaclyn may be a newish author but has shown in her writing of this book, we can see her going far and I for one cant wait for the next book.

✨Between Life & Death✨

Author: Jaclyn Kot
Release: out now and on KU!

What a beginning to a Romantasy series I am so excited to continue! This has been on my TBR way too long and when I saw that the last book is coming out this fall, I knew I had to quit pushing it back and jump on it!

BLAD is set in a world where magic is outlawed and those who have it are “cursed” and burned on the pyre. Sage has hidden her curse for 22 years until she almost loses control when her brother is suddenly and forcibly enlisted. Kidnapped by a tall, dark, and also cursed being, Sage finds herself alongside the rebels who ally to help her rescue her brother. But there’s something deeper to this male that protects her yet disappears randomly. A pull that she cannot deny but that her mind does not connect.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between Sage and Von, though I felt like it happened really fast without much hardship to develop it. While I know what I know now, I would’ve loved some more development there to really make me fall in love with what is going on between them. I’m excited to see what comes next after the revelations at the end, to see more world and character building, as well as to get to know the found family better. I enjoyed the spicy bits and the banter and I’m diving into book two straight away!

Tropes you may find in BLAD are bonds, reincarnated lovers, star crossed feels, forced proximity, tattoo bargains, touch her and ☠️, hidden identities, “good girl”, nicknames, tattooed winged MMC, meddling gods, slow burn to medium spice (but no completion yet 😂😉), and an exciting cliffhanger!

BLAD is out now and on KU!

My book club had chosen this book for our book of the month. Between Life and Death is my first read by Jaclyn Kot and is the first book in this series.
Overall, Kot has some interesting concepts and ideas, but the writing and character development needs major improvement. The storyline was a bit all over the place and there were almost no explanations for why some events were occurring and how they pertained to the story. The side characters were introduced quickly and thrown into the story with minor or no details given other than some physical features and characteristics. It's impossible to feel an investment in any of these characters.
I felt Sage and Von had zero chemistry and I wasn't a fan of their "insta-love relationship." Honestly, I found Von confusing for the first half of the book because he kept being described as "cat- like" and he was constantly purring. He also called Sage "Kitten" several times. I kept thinking he would shapeshift into a large cat, but then why was Sage finding black feathers all over the place?! Was the man supposed to be a cat or a bird? Not to mention he also has wings and vampire- like tendacies?! Von just wasn't the dark, broody man of my dreams.
I really struggled to finish the book especially during the last 20%. I think this book had a lot of potential to be excellent, but for me it just fell short of my expectations. As the writing stands now, I wouldn't recommend it. As there are many books already in the series, I have hoped the writing improved in later books, but I am not invested or interested in continuing the series.

1 ⭐️ !!!

Who sleeps with a man immediately after he tells you how often he’s gotten laid? :’)

"I was in a position to take his life, but I spared it and made a deal instead."
"What did you get in return?"
"I received a lot more than I bargained for."
"Are you telling me you got laid in return?"
"Many, many, many times, Little Goddess."

One page later, he’s knee deep in her coochie.

I trembled at the sight of him —my beautiful, dark conqueror tasting his newest conquest-easily won, easily given.

Describing yourself as EASY is not a bragging right, I fear. Say less, please.

Aside from the obvious, I do think this had the potential to be something, but it needed a whole lot more TLC than it got. The plot is lazy and hazy, the characters are underdeveloped and forgettable, and the actual betrayal is so obvious it hurts. I repeatedly forgot character’s names because the characterizations for everyone are so bad. I did enjoy the story, and predictable or not, I was interested in what was happening, but I’m not sold on reading more, so I’m setting this series down for now.
