On 24 April 1877 Tsar Nicholas II declared war on the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan had a battle-hardened army ready for war. For the Tsar, this was to be the first major conflict since the abolition of serfdom and the creation of a German-style military reserve system. Ian Drury details the campaigns fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, and the uniforms and organisation of the armies of both sides, in a text backed by numerous illustrations and photographs, including eight full page colour plates by Raffaele Ruggeri.
A solid overview of the conflict, and the armies therein. Drury is a clear expert on the topic by the fact that a significant collection of the art work and photographs are from his own collection. Not too much detail on tactics, but a good amount on uniforms, weapons, and strategic concern. Main focus is on the Russian side of the conflict, with not as much focus on the Ottomans. Quite impressive however how much detail he was able to squeeze in.
New area/era of wargaming inspired by this work for me
Liked the summary aspects of th effectiveness of the assorted troops. The uniforms, while colorful, should easily reproduced in 10mm figures on the table top.
Good introduction to an era I had no previous knowledge about.
