Provides advice on suriving in hostile environments and includes tips on shelters, traps, weapons, tools, food-finding, signaling, first aid, and other life-saving topics.
I was raised in Grantham, Lincolnshire and attended the King's Grammar School after passing the Eleven Plus exam. In the latter I clearly remember writing an essay on Oliver Cromwell – my first piece of military writing.
Then came a BA in history and international relations at Nottingham followed by a Master of Philosophy course at the University of York. The subject was the generalship and cavalry of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, my boyhood hero, during the English Civil War. The year I spent researching and writing at York, Oxford and at the British Library in London was a truly wonderful time. I moved to London and eventually joined a small publishing company as an editor. Thus began my writing career.
No, I'm not a constantly paranoid hiker, nor some crazy survivalist (thank God). But I've read several worst-case-scenario-in-the-wilderness handbooks over the years and this one still holds up as the best, most detailed and complete one of them all (yet appropriately short). If you're ever going for a longer hike in the mountains or far away from civilization, I suggest taking a copy with you - it never hurts to have some additional advice in hand's reach (besides your basic first aid training, etc.). ;-)
A nice collection of tips and diagrams of how to survive in the wild, including identifying plants, treating injuries, making traps, etc. Sadly, the book is not comprehensive and the illustrations can only be so helpful in identifying what you need to identify.
Very well laid out book. Nice organized chapters with tons of pics for the tasks mentioned. Very good book for a beginning camper and survivalist. Recommended
