Stories by a visionary master of supernatural fiction
The second volume of the only annotated edition of M. R. James's complete writings currently available, this book brings together tales from James's final two volumes, A Thin Ghost and Others and A Warning to the Curious. I n these stories, James continues his transformation of the ghost story from its nineteenth-century heritage.
Montague Rhodes James, who used the publication name M.R. James, was a noted English mediaeval scholar & provost of King's College, Cambridge (1905–18) & of Eton College (1918–36). He's best remembered for his ghost stories which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature. One of James' most important achievements was to redefine the ghost story for the new century by dispensing with many of the formal Gothic trappings of his predecessors, replacing them with more realistic contemporary settings.
Librarian note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
I will admit that I struggle with M R James at times - he has a very descriptive style which I struggle with at times and yes it is a source of frustration with me as I know he is a cornerstone of English ghost stories (hence why I guess it a low rating - more my own failings than the content I guess).
But what you have here is another selection of stories - and I guess like many prolific writers there are some you recognise and others that are new, some that really hit home and others maybe not so much. I would say if you have ever ready any M R James's works this book will feel familiar and I suspect each reader will find their own favourite story.
So if you want to dive in to the world of classic English ghost stories this is as a good a place as any to start.
MR James is my favorite writer of Ghost Stories. This is a great book to read all alone in a cabin in the woods with the wind blowing outside and rain slashing at the windows. The book though is 308 pages not 57 pages as listed at the top.
