How far would you go to betray everything you've ever known?
Kaliel didn't think second chances came with this much turmoil. Exiled from her home, surrounded by strangers and in love with a boy she barely recognizes, she can't take it. She has her best friend, a new mentor, and a chance to win the war against the Valtanyana, but it's all wrong. Desperate to salvage some semblance of her former life, she makes a deal that shatters everything.
Rhiannon is a booksmith from the middle of nowhere, Canada. She holds a PhD in Metaphysical Science and Parapsychology, which is to say she happens to know a lot about what goes bump in the night. When she's not writing she's singing karaoke, burning dinner, and hiding her superhero identity. She'd like to own a unicorn one day, as long as it doesn't eat her. You'll find her sipping iced cappuccino despite her allergy to coffee at www.yafantasyauthor.com
Holy crap! The ending is IN.SANE. Review to follow!
So, I was given an ARC of VULTURE from Rhiannon Paille because I'm a huge fan girl of Paille's writing. She didn't ask for a review, she didn't ask for promotion, and she didn't really ask for any feedback, so you can rest assured that whatever you find in this post is solely based on how effing awesome VULTURE is and for no other reason.
Given all of that, I'm not entirely sure how much I can really discuss the book - as you can tell from the image, there's no artwork for it yet and as far as I'm aware there's not even a release date (I think 2014?). So apologies if you're hoping this is coming your way any time soon!
Firstly, if you haven't read SURRENDER and JUSTICE, books 1 and 2 in The Ferryman and the Flame series, then I suggest you do so right now. You will need to read those to have any scooby doo what's going on, but believe me, they're both worth your time.
The most exciting part of VULTURE for me was the relationship between Krishani and Kaleil; it has never been so intense and heartbreaking, and is just exhausting to read. The lengths they both go to to save the other is painful and you see such an evolution of their characters in VULTURE; it's not only refreshing to see the main characters convincingly struggle in their relationship but you begin to understand why they make certain decisions and finally see both of them get a grasp of just how dangerous their situation is.
As always, Paille's writing is wonderful and within the first few pages I found myself back in The Lands of Men and once again immersed in the beautiful surroundings and characters that Paille has done such a wonderful job of creating in the first 2 books. She isn't your typical YA writer so if you're looking for sarcastic best friends and witty one liners, you're probably in the wrong place. However, if you're looking for Tolkien-esque fantasy, unconventional narratives, and an impeccable writing style, Paille's your girl.
The story line is exactly what I wanted it to be and, more importantly, I think it's exactly what it needed to be. SURRENDER AND JUSTICE had a certain urgency to them that Krishani and Kaleil seemed to be misunderstanding but in VULTURE the weight of everything finally hits them and I'm going to be terribly cliched and say that the whole story is just one huge roller coaster of despair and devastation. It's event after event of obstacles and war; like the the first 2 books were the gradual build up and VULTURE is the crescendo. And the best part about it is that it's not even the final book in the series.
Everything about this book, particularly K&K's relationship takes a darker and more desperate tone compared to SURRENDER and JUSTICE and it's just fantastic to read. The ending is just devastating, completely unexpected, and for me, hands down the best part of the book in terms of how well it was written (not that the rest was bad). VULTURE is one of those books that you can read, thinking you've got it sussed, then BAM! the ending hits you and you're right back to square one with a giant WTF! expression plastered across your face.
VULTURE is nothing like the rest of The Ferryman and the Flame series in some ways, but couldn't be a better and more relevant installment in others. Expect more passion, more deceit, more war, and more nightmares, and don't be fooled into thinking this is a love story with a happy ending.
Absolutely adored it, my favourite in the series so far. 5 out of 5 for Paille and the flawless world she has created.
Thanks to Rhiannon for an ARC of Vulture! She knows I’ve been wanting it for awhile.
This book took me sometime to finish because I have read the previous books and I knew this one was going to have an ending to put Shakespeare’s tragedies to shame. Still, I bit the bullet and forced myself to keep reading even as I wanted to keep living in blissful denial. Despite the heart wrenching conclusion, I expect to be one of the first to snatch up Mercy when it comes along.
The plot: The bad (the serious bad) takes a goodly amount of time to roll around and I was wary of letting it lure me into a false sense of security. There are sword fights and attacks and magical struggles so it wasn’t as if everyone was lying in fields of dandelions, but I was waiting for a very specific type of calamity and, yep, it happened. The plot trots along and there weren’t any parts I found slow despite the 400+ page printed length. (Yes, there were sex scenes in here and I skimmed/skipped them as per my usual modus operandi.)
The characters: I laud Paille for not adding a love triangle into this. That is one source of angst I cannot abide and this story already has plenty of that.
Kaliel has a bit of trouble grasping just what happened to Krishani after her death and I wish she’d been just a tad more understanding. The poor slob went through purgatory when she was killed, he needs her. I also wish she’d been more ready to embrace her power as the Amethyst Flame and fight the Valtanyana, but looking back, she’s never been eager to fulfill Tor’s designs, even in the First Era. What she did was understandable and made sense for her character, even when it had me internally screaming “nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!”
Krishani is much better off than he was in the last book, but is still plagued by the malady of the Ferryman when he doesn’t perform his duties. He’s now willing to do them so he can be with Kaliel, but there is still an impressive amount of friction between him and Tulsen.
Pux gets a love interest in here and I really don’t like that. I would have preferred for him to remain the perpetual, never-grow up, Peter Pan type. He always just struck me as so boyish and childlike it honestly never occurred to me about him falling in love. Oh well.
I started to hate Klavotesi less in this one and didn’t want to smother him in his cloak quite as often. Perhaps it was because I more understood here why he was pushing for the things he was and towards the end he showed something akin to…humanity in his internal monologues.
If you like Epic Fantasy and New Adult Romance, this book is for you. But brace yourselves, because you might end up needing chocolate at the end.
There may be a spoiler or many within this review so please either don't read it or kick yourself really, really hard if you do and you ruin things for yourself because you really don't want to do that! This has been an extraordinary series so I'm just looking out for you best interests! You really want to read these in order!
Let's see, where to begin with this review! Wow. Well, it picks up right where book #2 leaves off, on the battlefield with the battle having just ended. This is really nice because you know you don't miss anything in terms of time. From the very start of this one the author has you hooked. Ever word is addicting and you will have a really hard time putting the book down! This book is filled with a lot of struggles from relationships to vultures and horseman to flames and creepy little dream girls (I'm seriously going to have nightmares I think). The last few chapters of the book are edge of your seat crazy serious. The last two still have me contemplating this whole life thing. They were (SPOILER MY FRIENDS) so freaking sad I wanted to gouge out my eyes so I didn't ever accidently read them again. They were brilliant. I love this book. (Yes, if you can make me want to gouge out my eyes, this is apparently good. I've just learned this about myself as I typed this review. Go figure!)
All in all I have enjoyed every single one of the books in The Ferryman and The Flame series. I am just hoping against hope this isn't the end!! I really, really, really don't want this to be the end. It would be a bittersweet end, but I don't want it to end!! Of course I'm being bratty here but they are just really great books and the characters now feel like a part of my really real world so it will be sad to let them go. If you haven't read these books (you shouldn't be reading this review, bad you!) you really should. These are brilliant and a new favorite for me! Love them all.
But if you don't like spoilers: VULTURE has everything I love in a book: passion, adventure and of course romance. I’d read it again if I didn't have slew of other books to read. Even though I know there are more books coming out for this series I can honestly say that this series is up there in my favorites. Right next to Maggie Stiefvater's “Wolves of Mercy Falls." The writing makes me feel like I am there in the scenes and I feel like I can connect to the characters. That is why the ending is so hard to stomach—it is like did that *really* just happen? I had to read it twice to make sure. I can’t say that I have any idea where Rhi is going to take this now, but what I can say is that I am dying to read the next one. I say this in the nicest way possible; Rhiannon Paille is the Queen of Cliffhangers.
Ladies of an age, grab your wine, everyone else must settle for a gallon of ice cream. While Surrender had us falling in love, Justice had us playing in a dark new world, now, in Vulture, Rhiannon paille has us living with the consequences of our actions. Kaliel has been given another chance with the love of her life, but with this chance comes exile from the land and people she loves. Krishani is not the boy she left behind, in his place is a darker boy with secrets creating distance between them. As things get steadily worse for Kaliel she makes a terrible choice for the best of reasons, condemning everyone she loves, most especially Krishani. This book tore me into pieces again and again and I'd still recommend it! No one's writing makes you feel as deeply as Rhiannon Paille's does! best part of the book, Klavotesi, seriously, he's my new book boyfriend and none of you can have him!
Vulture is the third book in The Ferryman & The Flame series. I think that it is the best so far.
Rhiannon has created a unique world with unique characters that you want to see succeed in what they are destined to do. No matter what they may do, you hope for the best for them.
I look forward to seeing what the future holds for these characters and where Rhiannon is going to take us next on this journey.
I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First-reads giveaway.
I am looking forward to reading it however as I have not read the first two books in the series (didn't realise it was part of a set and hate starting part way through the series) I have since downloaded the first two stories to my kindle.
Once I have read the first two I will then read this. I will leave my review once I have read it. sorry for the delay...
I absolutely love this story line. I can't believe I got myself sucked into a series and have to wait for the next installment. I usually wait until all the books are written and then read them all! Now I'm anxiously waiting. You can't have possibly left Kaliel and Krishani dead! They have to fulfill the final prophecy! When is the next book due for publication? I need it like a junkie! LOL! Thank so much for sharing your talent with us and taking us to a whole new/old world.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have been eagerly awaiting this book and finally bought a copy this year at a convention. The story of Kaliel and Krishani gets darker and they discover truths about themselves. They have a hard time accepting those truths and also their destiny. I was very surprised at the end of the book. I am now really looking forward to the next book in the series. I have to wonder if Kaliel and Krishani will finally accept who they are, what needs to be done and maybe they will have a happy ending.
I loved this book. The fight of what you want and what is right. Showing that life isn't always fair. It was amazing and sad and lovely. True love knows no bounds. It's sad that they couldn't be together and they both had to leave their forms. But hopefully they will be together again soon.....
