In "The Athlete's Book of Home Remedies", Dr. Metzl describes many common sport-related injuries, their treatments, and how to prevent them using strength-training exercises and nutritional support. He also includes useful suggestions for improving your training and fitness. The book has a strong emphasis on preventing injuries and managing pain through functional strength training and includes several strength-training routines with specific exercises. While the book appears to be published under the auspices of "Men's Health" magazine, the book is not targeted just towards men; Dr. Metzl even includes suggestions on preventing vaginal yeast infections and tips on picking a good sports bra. Any one who engages in any athletic endeavor- at any level- would benefit from having this very useful book on their shelves.

Great book, very good tips. Very easy to understand and go thru. I think a lots of people could benefit from it, of course is not a replacement in any way of a physiotherapist or similar professional but is got very good information regarding very common types of injures and ways to prevent them or deal with them.

Inspirational, informative, and very readable. Men's Health format in a book full of information for runners.

Comprehensive book regarding sports injuries. More as a reference book than to read for enjoyment.

Easy to read and useful as a reference for some stretches, but is also missing quite a few useful stretches, especially for the glutes.
The book is rather repetitive, giving the same remedies over and over again. This is understandable in that the book appears to be designed to be read as a reference book rather than cover-to-cover. However, I would have liked more detail regarding the specifics of the ailments, rather than the same set of stretches given over and over again. In the same vein, some of the descriptions of the ailments are not really precise enough for a self-diagnosis, although again, I see that the intention of the book is not to be a medical manual and that any complicated diagnosis should be deferred to someone with proper training.
The diet section at the end was also disappointing in its lack of exposition. It prescribes various diets without really justifying why they are beneficial.

This is a very good book for any athlete, regardless of his or her sport. Complete with a brief anatomy lesson for each body part. At each injury, it gives some symptoms, an overview of the injury, how to fix it, how to prevent it, and most importantly, when to call a doctor. Also includes great full body workouts to strengthen the entire kinetic chain. There is another section with what to do with 'injuries' such as nose bleed, road rash, etc.. The book also includes some tips for every sport. Finally there is simplified eating advice for every athlete, whether strength or endurance.

Disclaimer: Dr. Metzl is my doctor and I take the classes he teaches once or twice a month in NYC ... he is the only specialist I've seen in two years who helped "fix" my knee. He recommended strength training to help me run pain-free again. And many of those workous are in this book. For any athelete -- whether you're a serious competitor, weekend warrior, or just getting back into a workout routine -- this book will most likely prove a completely invaluable resource.

Haven't had enough training misfortune yet to verify the usefulness of the book, but it sure looks comprehensive. It's probably not meant to be read cover-to-cover as there is a huge amount of repetition when a given remedy/exercise applies to multiple injuries and gets described each time completely. Can easily recommend the text as a reference though.

Awesome information. Super helpful. It's awesome to get recommendations from someone who's both a doctor AND an athlete. Sometimes it feels like it's just skimming the surface, but I guess that just makes me look forward even more to his new book just for runners coming out in December.

Took it out of the library to see if it was worthwhile and it is an amazing reference book for all types of athletic injuries (not just for runners), ways of prevention, and how to fix it.
