Managing and participating on governing boards of business can be a complicated and politically fraught experience. In many cases the room is filled with first timers - first time CEO, first time board member, or first time Chairman. As public and private companies are under so much public scrutiny, boards are increasingly being held accountable for the organization. This series of books covers key issues that are at the forefront of governing bodies such hiring board members; and creating boards that are effective and keep organizations on track; succession planning; compensation; organizational performance and measurement - plus more. Interviews with CEO's, Chairman of the Board and first time board members are sprinkled throughout, making these books readable and relevant.
Much of the normative corporate governance literature is written from the perspective of the the board, chairperson or individual director, so this book is useful in that it focuses on the CEO's role with the board. The book is aimed at for- profit boards, but much of the practical advice is also relevant for non-profits. Recommended.
Written for for-profit boards in the USA, that being said its a fascinating read into how a board should operate and there are valuable lessons to be applied to just about any board anywhere.
