Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Por ahora es el arco que menos me está gustando. Ya me avisaron que es el más flojo después del timeskip, así que espero terminarlo pronto para volverme a enganchar con One Piece.
Having spent a long time away from One Piece...A critical eye doesn't really do it justice. Still, this volume leaves much to be desired. It lacks in art, it lacks in story and the speech bubbles are everywhere. One Piece, for me, borders on being way too verbose. I've always felt this way.
Without the trademark humor and crew we have a hollow volume.
This was a fun volume and focuses on Luffy rescuing Princess Shirahoshi and we deal with the fallout of what happens when Davy Jones along with Vander Decken invade the Ryuugu castle and its a war between them, Luffy goes to some place where Nami and Franky are meanwhile Zoro deals with the fallout of that battle and the King Neptune and his men barely escape. Thats just the initial part. Majority of this volume is about exploring what happened in the past that led to this hatred between Fishmen and Humans. We learn the tale of Queen Otohime who would want her kingdom to join with the humans and needs Signature in the Reverie meanwhile Fisher Tiger would rescue slaves and we learn of his whole backstory along with how Arlong, Jinbei were part of it and their code about being better than humans with no killing policy and you could see his death part too and then we have such great moments, the whole book is a masterpiece to read. It has such high emotions and conflicts and makes you question whose right, the queen who would want peace all along who might have gotten it but in the end paid with her life or the slave-rescuer whose inbred hatred of humans began with the past but still had the heart to rescue the girl? This volume showcases how Arlong became a villain and Jinbei becoming a warlord and such great things! Just such a great volume and expands the history of the Fish-men really well! I loved this whole volume! Just amazing art and narrative!

We're not even halfway through the arc and its main antagonist already gets wrecked - and not even by Luffy, but by Zoro! Elsewhere, the princes also begin their assault on the enemy captains and seem to be doing all right. For all their bluster, they're very weak. I'm sure the Straw Hats could have taken them on even before the time skip.
You'd think this would drain all the tension out of the arc, but really, it only makes things worse. It establishes that this isn't about the strongest and most tenacious guy around beating up the enemy. What they should watch out for is the politics. And Luffy is terrible at politics. What do you mean you can't fight the main bad guy because it'll only worsen the underlying human-fishman prejudice? What do you mean the backstory isn't about some single idiot throwing his weight around with his overwhelming strength, but rather the deep-seated racial hatreds that in some way or form touch everyone on the planet, both in land and sea?
For something that takes place deep in the sea in the kingdom of fish people, it may be the most down-to-earth One Piece arc so far. The character motivations and actions reflect real life pretty well. It has a lot going for it in that.
Straw Hat Pirates need to pass Fish-Man Island for reach New World. The problem is getting bigger when Princess Shirahoshi in danger. Also the hatred between Fishman and human are still in there. The source? Of course it was really shocked me. Flashbacks with so many death in the past. It was really sad and life changing for Fish-Man Island also Jinbe's past also unveiled in this book. Luffy and friends must save the kingdom from Howdy and others. Although, it was a bit boring but still enjoyable and couldn't wait for the next book!
not a lot happens in this volume as there are a lot of flashbacks that explain part of the fish-man history and the backstory of several characters like jimbei. maybe i had high expectations for this arc but so far it's a bit weak, which is slightly disappointing
A bit of a longer volume. There was a lot to unpack here. I enjoyed how the plot furthered and how things have started to get rolling for the fish man island story. On the other hand we also got a bit of a background into fish man island. I will say there was a lot presented for this background. For me it felt a little harder to follow in the manga format, and wish I could have a little more through explanation, but I am still happy with what I was able to piece together.
FISHMAN ISLAND ARC - PART 2 1. "those with the greatest power fear change the most." - that's usually because they did not get to power with only good will
2. i like that fisher tiger knew to fight against the oppression, and not to succumb to mindless killing himself, even after all he endured as a slave, even after seeing a human slave and seeing her pain.
This is what I'm talking about! The flashbacks make up this arc more than anything else and I'd rather have more of these scenes versus whatever's happening in the present. Fisher Tiger and Otohime are compelling characters that deserve even more attention than what we're already delightfully given here. Some people make reference to Otohime being a reflection of MLK, while Tiger represents Malcolm X--I agree with the first comparison, a little less so with the latter. Some commentators also make reference to Fishman Island itself, residing near the Holy Land of Majiorie (which has total control to remove the sunlight from Fishman Island should they choose to do so, which signifies the natural vulnerability of the island's geographical nature), as an allusion to Palestine and Israel. The effects of terrorism or fighting, used simultaneously as a means of resistance but also a horror that is to be feared/manipulated, parallel's this comparison as well. But I digress--the whole commentary on all of this can easily be conglomerated into a metaphorical narrative of colonization, postcolonialism, intergenerational trauma and marginalization. And it's done beautifully.
On a personal note, I don't really agree with Otohime's position, the idea of kissing up to the government just reeks of subservience to me. Whereas, the grey area of Tiger's life is just so much more understandable and compelling. I definitely relate to the inexplicable kernel of pain/hatred against those that have no interest in protecting/understanding your aforementioned community, while negotiating/suppressing one's own baser impulses to simply be against them in order to be a better person that intrinsically acknowledges complexity.
Anyways, I can make a whole One Piece essay on this topic.
Sidenote: If Koala doesn't name her kid, Tiger or something in the future to honour him. Imma be upset. JK JK.
2025 reread : there was no break in my reread because I was reading OP fanfictions instead of OP itself, it never happened. This volume is very very good. I think the flashbacks are fucking perfect. It does feel like with the timeskip we entered a new era of OP where the overall themes of the series are much more in your face than before and I think Fishmen island is the first time we see it. There is a lot to be said about these flashbacks and how they show the different ways to fight oppression, but I bet it has been said better by someone else somewhere so I won't make an ass of myself here.
Okay those flashbacks are pretty darn good. Still, I want the next arc already.
Not a bad volume - I'm not sure One Piece is capable of a bad volume - but the flashbacks just didn't feel organic in the story. It felt like everything got pulled to a halt to tell us massive amounts of setup, which might have been interesting on its own or more incrementally woven into the story, but just felt blocky here.
sanji’s gonna die from blood loss if he sees the mermaid princess 😂
queen otohime wanted to change things for the fishman island and it’s residences.
sun pirates were formed after fisher tiger stood up against the tenryuubito. although jimbei and arlong were in separate paths, they joined fisher tiger in support to save the fishmen that were enslaved by humans. fisher tiger died after escorting a human girl home, but was ambushed by the marines after the human girl’s mom called them.
jimbei took over the sun pirates while arlong was captured by kizaru. during that period, otohime’s efforts to reduce discrimination and to teach the young ones about the humans was seen by jimbei. he took the marine’s offer to be shichibukai such that the fishman island can receive pardon from the government, and otohime’s wish is one step closer to being fulfilled.
a tenryuubito visited fishman island and was badly injured by deep sea creatures. when the pirates were gonna shoot the noble, queen otohima took the shot. when shirahoshi saw the queen injured, she shouted and the sea kings appeared. vander decken knew about the legend of a mermaid princess controlling sea king and since then, wanted to marry shirahoshi. queen otohime had to pacify the tenryuubito and made it back home safely. by the next reverie, if otohime manages to get enough signatures, there can be talks of relocation to the surface.
queen otohime and fisher tiger are two sides of the same tragic coin.
within this volume, we get to see the two heroes of fish-men island, however they represent two sides to the human and fish-men conflict. fisher tiger, the adventurer, was most famed for freeing the slaves of marijoa, no matter their race. of course this is an excellent deed, and the whole of fish-men island revered him for his almost impossible task, it however drove a wider gap between the fish-men and humans. the celestial dragons, who enslaved the fish-men (and humans) are the world nobles, and anyone who came up against them will be duly sorry. by freeing the slaves, as a fish-man, fisher tiger defies the celestial dragons, further proving to them that fish-men are monstrous, untameable beasts. queen otohime recognises this, that if fisher tiger frees the slaves - which is considerably a good thing - he will turn the celestial dragons against the fish-men, even more than they already are, but she could not deny that she heard the pain in his heart, so she did not intervene. because of the nature of the slaves, being property of the world nobles, they could not return to normal living, and world instead have to be outcasts, so fisher tiger started the pirate group, the sun pirates, as a way for the slaves to go on living securely, within a group of outlaws. although some of the sun pirates did not want to be criminals, they had to because it was that or enslavement. fisher tiger becoming the captain of the sun pirates and causing mayhem on the oceans were the humans also dwelled infused the notion that fish-men are dangerous and a threat to human existence. this negatively impacted queen otohime's chances of trying to get the residents of fish-men island to sign the petition to emigrate and live among the humans, because of the reputation fisher tiger had gained as a pirate and fish-man, and because of the stories of enslavement and prejudice that they had heard from him, the fish-men did not warm to otohime's idea of peace with the humans, because they had treated them badly.
however, despite this, otohime and tiger both wanted the same things, although their experiences hindered their values. tiger, although fighting against the humans and the navy as a pirate, always refused his crewmembers to kill. he believed that if they killed them for the simple crime of being human, aside from anything else, then they were no better than them. if they kill, they lose, because they are kneeling to their hatred, which would be too close to the human nature he had witnessed. otohime had similar values, she always helped the shipwrecked humans on fish-men island, and went as far to protect a celestial dragon that threatened her citizens and even her. she told the fish-men who tried to kill the world noble to drop their guns, because there are children watching, the children who do not know of the history before hand, of the prejudice and hate between the humans and fish-men, and therefore these children were the hopes of the future of peace among the two groups. if they were shown violence and hate against the humans, then they too will react in similar ways.
otohime's values were less complicated compared to tiger's. otohime campaigned for peace among the two species and believed that if they the first to forgive, they will get closer to the humans. that they fear what they do not know, and they only know a small sample of humans. tiger's feelings were a little more complicated. as a former slave, he could never feel it in himself to forgive humans and what they did to him, but if he let his hatred and revenge control him, he is no better than the humans, so he urged his crew to look past the history and not persecute humans for being humans.
jinbe and arlong of tiger's crew inherited tiger's will, however differently. jinbe understood tiger's wish to want to get along with the humans, but that he physically couldn't because of what they did to him. jinbe inherited tiger's hope for a peaceful future, and changed his ways to allow himself to be driven by it, to befriend humans, such as koala, luffy and ace. arlong, however, inherited tiger's hate, he saw how tiger refused the blood transfusion from the humans because he could not stand to have his persecutor's blood run through his veins, and for that reason tiger died. although tiger's last words encouraged his crew to not hold human's at fault for his death and to not be led by revenge and hatred (which jinbe and many others understood), arlong could not look past that because of tiger's hate for humans, he died, and instead took it to heart, hence why we see arlong's actions in coco village at the beginning of the series.
so, although they wanted the same things, circumstances led them to have different final outcomes. and the fact that both otohime and tiger died at the hands of humans (allegedly), set back the progression for fish-men and human friendship massively.
i also find it interesting how the sun is the symbol of hope and freedom. tiger branding his crew as the 'sun pirates' and marking over the former slave symbol burned on them with a sun. otohime's speech about how the fish-men could live anywhere on the vast, vast sea floor, and yet they choose to live in the one spot where the sun reached 33,000 feet below. also (with the gift of hindsight) we know about the sun god nika, the warrior of liberation and freedom, or known as joyboy. the sun representing freedom, and the fact that the main force for the fish-men to emigrate is so that they could feel the sun themselves, without the water between them, is a very touching notion. it's to say that the sun ends up shining on everyone, no matter where they are, it does not discriminate, the son is freedom.
Volume 63: Chapter 615-626 Saga 7: Fishman Island Arc 25: Fishman Island
This arc deal with the topic of racism, slavery and discrimination. Two figures, Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger choose a different path but bear a same purpose; to stop discrimination and liberate Fishmen.
Queen Otohime wants to bring a unity and peaceful life between Fishmen, Merfolks and Human. She dreaming of to let her people live on the surface. Fisher Tiger wants to free the oppressed and not becoming a cold-blooded murderer. But, both of them died before their dreams come true.
I was a little bored with this volume but the ending did make me cry
I do have to say during the first half I assumed the queen was the same size as her husband and daughter so to see her so small was surprising. How is she alive after giving birth to the princess
A really good volume that was necessary to explain the entire history of Fisher Tiger and of Queen Otohime, there wasn't much action but we understand the hatred towards humans from the fishman very clearly
Jesus fucking Christ 😭😭 I don't understand how it keeps getting better, this arc is actually insane, so sad but so fucking real, n its about mermaids. FUCK H20 ALL MY HOMIES ON FISMAN ISLAND 😭😭😭
