Hayden Berry is lost in a small South Dakota town after crashing his car, when he is rescued by Deputy Sheriff Dylan Hubble and taken home for the night. One night turns into two when they are snowed in and instant attraction turns into life-long love.
But Hayden isn't free to be with Dylan and he leaves, the memory of that winter casting a shadow over the rest of his life...
Even a cheater can have their happy ending But I don't care. Thought at least I can enjoy it a little, but I didn't. This is not a feel good holiday story, this one is a '-feel good for cheater holiday story' .. And I didn't feel good. At all. And I don't care about their stupid happy ending. Let me delete this book immediately. Done.
I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this book. While I actually loved the character of Dylan, I'm torn about the circumstances. My biggest problem with the book was the
So yes, there were parts of this book that I enjoyed and more importantly, wanted to enjoy, but my shoulders were just tight up around my ears with the stress this book caused me. But at the end the conflict was resolved within about 5 pages. Not cool.
I don't know her, but I'm going to link to L-D's review of Snowbound because she does an excellent job of pinpointing the things that gave me pause about this story without me having to say a word.
Yet, despite all of the issues that L-D mentions in her review, I still felt really sympathetic towards Dylan and wanted him to have his happily ever after. Oh okay... even as angry with Hayden as I was, I still wanted him to get a HEA after as well. I guess I'm always going to root for true love, no matter the circumstances.
Really enjoyed this short novella from Scarlet Blackwell. 4.5 stars and a big thumbs up from me.
Hayden, a young 25 year old dentist, is driving back home from a wedding...he and the Mrs had a row before he left, so he's on his own, and gets lost in the snow in the back end of beyond South Dakota. The car hits an obstacle and things go from bad to worse when he realises that he hasn't got a clue where he is....enter our very hunky cop Dylan who takes pity on Hayden after some sarcastic banter on Hayden's part, and tells him that a) the car is not fit to drive, b) the garage is closed anyway, c) the main road is closed up ahead due to the weather and d) as all the local hotels are full cos of an ice festival, he can spend the night at Dylan's...(Yes please!!).
Now please do bear in mind that Hayden is married...I did, but then dismissed it……his wife sounded like a real bitch, and if she wanted to behave as she did, then Hayden is to be given a little leeway himself IMHO...and here I do have to admit that I have a 'thing' for hunky and 'in charge' cops (Jurgen Dammerung....be still my beating heart). Did we know that Hayden was quite taken with men in his youth....No, we did not, but he only thought about it....so when he's offered a free nights stay with said gorgeous cop, which loony with a tiny brain would say No??.....certainly NOT me, hehe!!
Of course, things turn out as you would expect (says yay very quietly, not confrontational at all, no sirree) and the next morning, Hayden is riddled with guilt....as well as wondering what the hell has hit him, he's so 'into' Dylan, and the feeling is definitely mutual..... I'll leave this one here, there was some sniffling at the end, but I'm not confirming one way or the other whether there's a HEA, you'll have to find out for yourself.
Um, I’m not even sure what I just read. If ever a book put a nice little slap and finish on an ending, it’s this one.
Hayden Berry is traveling one night out of state in the snow. His car breaks down and local Deputy Sheriff Dylan Hubble stops and helps him by giving him a place to stay while the roads are closed and Hayden gets his car fixed. Instant attraction, instant smexin.
First you have to believe in love at first sight…and I’m not so sure I do. So there’s that. I really liked Dylan and felt horrible for him and what he was left behind with, but at the same time, I don’t exactly know ANYTHING about him. Nada. Same goes for Hayden. I know that he never acted on his homosexual feelings and that he’s torn with the life he settled in to, but I don’t know anything about this man. So the reader gets this two day whirlwind and then time forwards a really long ass time.
But it was the reunion that had me completely scratching my head. What does either of them know about the other? What on Earth was that conversation with Dylan and someone I won’t mention for spoiler reasons? Oh come on!! I would have dumped eggs on Dylan’s head and broke dishes. What was with all the time wasted and years waiting? Gahhh, just sad.
The thing that annoys me the most about all this is that this could have been awesome. The story is there, and has all the classic plot points of anguish from some of my old m/f books, but there is just nothing for the reader to grab on to. If the author had developed the personalities and bonding of the characters, and absolutely developed that ending, this would have so been a guilty pleasure of mine. As it stands, it’s OK, but not something memorable.
I have a confession to make. I'd never read a book with such a blurb and such reviews, if it wasn't written by Scarlet Blackwell. I just love her writing, I can't help myself :) Sure sometimes her stories leave me frustrated and pissed, but mostly they tug at my heartstrings and I'm crying and then I'm crying some more and then I'm crying happy tears at the end, because it's always so beautiful <3
So I manned up and read this story. And I wasn't disappointed in the slightest! The first part was intense and hot and doomed from the start, because we knew what would happen. Thankfully the separation gap got covered in less that a page, so it wasn't drawn out at all and the second part was so good - some push and pull, a little heartbreak and a perfect, totally perfect happy ending. I love Scarlet Blackwell's soulmate characters finding each other even in the most difficult circumstances. I also applaud her for not being afraid to write about an unpopular or difficult topics and not making her characters into perfect cookie-cutters.
Really enjoyed this one, despite it being light on the realism and the relationship depth. Something about Blackwell's writing, really appeals to me and makes me care for his MCs.
I really, really liked this story. It was sort of a gay Bridges of Madison County kind of story but with a hard earned happy ending. Of course someone always gets hurt or left behind. I felt bad for enjoying certain aspects of this story but I couldn’t help myself. Sometimes we commit ourselves to another before we’ve had a chance to meet our soul mate. When that happens, all hell breaks loose when your heart and body conflict with your brain and moral compass. You feel so sad when Dylan and Hayden meet, knowing they were destined to be together but Hayden was already committed to another. You ache for Dylan knowing he lost his future before he ever had a fighting chance. Some parts were just heartbreaking and the angst felt so raw. This is the kind of story where you know that no matter how it ends, there will be someone who get their hearts desire but someone else will lose.
I rounded up my rating on this one. I always love a tear-jerker MM-ROM, and even though this one delivered, the 12 year gap kind of got to me. I know that sometimes love only takes a day or two to happen, but for the cop to end a decade long relationship for someone he barely knew just didn't ring true for me. I understand that it took the MC a long time to not only settle his previous life before embarking on a new one, and that his love interest likely could have pined for years for him- but it was the ease of his current partner leaving him that was unrealistic. I get that the current beau wanted his lover to be happy, and that he felt that his cop wasn't 100% committed to him (in his heart at least), but just to oh-so gracefully bow out and pack his bags was extremely unrealistic. I liked the story and the HEA, but it didn't stay with me for the right reasons.
I feel like the reviews have been grossly unfair. Scarlet Blackwell writes about the themes which are a bit heavy and dark. I don't like to read about rape, so I have not read her series. I don't like to read about menage in relationships so I don't read such books. If you don't like to read about cheating don't read it. And above all don't lower the rating because of your personal prefernces. This book was written very well, just as she writes. And that is how it should have been reviewd and rated. Books are a mirror to society. There is so much written in books that should not happen but happens everyday. Don't blame the book. I in no way condone cheating, but he paid the price dearly. Both of them did. Paying the price with your time is one the worse payments.
The lonely roads between the small towns of the American West are a bad place to have car trouble – help may be a long time coming. For Hayden Berry, a wreck late at night in a February storm brings more than just rescue. Deputy Sheriff Dylan Hubble finds Hayden before he dies of exposure. Scarlett Blackwell's Snowbound gives them a chance to fall in love.
One day's shelter in Dylan's home while Hayden's car is repaired turns into two – giving Hayden a chance to revise his attitudes about his own sexuality. He's acknowledged his desire for men but never acted on it, having married a woman who's waiting for him at home. Dylan's very open about his desires – the two end up in bed fairly fast, and are very, very inclined to stay there, but honor wins out. I loved this section of the book, for admitting that previous commitments can't just be dropped because new bonds are formed.
When Hayden is at last free to seek out Dylan again, he's got to be prepared for Dylan's moving on with his life in the many years since they said goodbye. There is a happy ending for them but not until a secondary character behaves very strangely. The effect is not "totally romantic;" instead it calls everyone's understanding of healthy relationships into question. Another twenty or so pages of exploration and resolution to achieve their togetherness and I'd accept it and love it, but this happened very, very fast.
There were so many inaccuracies regarding the setting that I was gritting my teeth trying to stay in the story. Streetlights and sidewalks do not exist in the 20 to 50 mile stretches between small towns in South Dakota; we're lucky if they exist within a town of five hundred people, who all know each others' business. Leaving on a two thousand mile car trip in winter without a spare or emergency gear is to ignore reality, and leaving the car in a storm, even if it's undrivable, is a good way to die. This story is set in my, and a lot of readers' "back yard," and such things are glaring.
The first section of the book is glorious and passionate, but it still isn't enough foundation for the ending. The same kind of serious issue that kept them apart in the beginning exists at the end, but is not worked through. Consequently, the ending feels rushed and Hayden and Dylan's senses of honor, one of the shining things in the first section, is displayed but unused. The spell woven throughout Snowbound was undone for me by the speed, and I was very sorry to be snapped out of it.
This one wasn't really a Christmas story and that's my bad. I liked Hayden and Dylan and together they worked for me. Unfortunately, their timing was lousy and in spite of how strongly he was attracted to Dylan, Hayden had a life he didn't feel he could walk away from. To me this gave him a sense of commitment and honour that people don't always have, but he wasn't perfect either his encounter with Dylan was betray of vows he's made to someone else and as fate with have it he had to live with that and it's not always easy living with the consequences of a mistake that you've willingly made. Don't get me wrong I'm in no way absolving him of what he did. I'm just saying that the fact that he did it tells me how strongly he felt for Dylan.
The person I felt the sorriest for in the end was Will.
'Snowbound' ended up being a little more intense of a story than I had expected because it left me wondering if given the same set of circumstances what would I do? What would I want my partner to do under these circumstances? At what point do you let go because there's really nothing left to hold on to? I'd like to believe I know the answers to these questions for myself, but really do any of us know until the time comes for the decision? I for one hope I never have to find out.
This is one of the books I really don;t know what to think about. On the one hand, it is an intense story wit a few unexpected turns, has main characters who really have to suffer before their happy ending (not my favorite anyway, but okay when well done), and has some very passionate love scenes. BUT!!! And this is a big but. One of them cheats, and not just in the heat of the moment, the other one encourages that cheating, and then they really hurt each other when they get back together again. The latter may be expected, but still. And to top it all off, the ending felt rushed and, ultimately, too convenient to me in comparison to the rest of the story.
Hayden is married, and he may have just had a fight with his wife, but he clearly still loves her. He is tempted by Dylan's offer for more than just a bed for the night - apparently he has suppressed the fact he's gay for many years. Now, I get temptation, and I can see how he's had a hard time not giving in to his desire for a man. But not to own up to the fact and change his life once he does get it? To go back and stay married, pretending everything is okay? Looking at that as "penance" for his sins? So not my cup of tea!
As for Dylan, the hot deputy and later sheriff, he is something else as well. he knows Hayden is married, yet goes ahead and seduces him. I won't go into the rest of his misdemeanors since they would be spoilers, but as much as I felt for him and his "lost love" (after two nights!), I couldn't get myself to like him. At all. I respcted and liked his eventual lover a hell of a lot more!
If you like stories about flawed (and I mean deeply flawed!!!) characters, if you want to see your main characters suffer - for years, and if you're looking for a read with lots of hot bedroom activity, then you will probably like this short story a lot more than I did.
Warning: infidelity, since Hayden is married when the 2-days affair with Dylan happens
The story is structure into two parts. The first part is the one where Hayden Berry meets Dylan Hubble for the first time. His tire is shredded and he is lost in a snow, stuck without spare tire, in the middle of Blackstone, South Dakota (population 515). Dylan, a deputy at that time, brings Hayden to his house where the attraction between the two guys lead for 2-days of passionate night. But Hayden is married and he needs to return to his wife. The second part happens twelve years after, when Hayden returns to Blackstone to get Dylan back.
This one is definitely one of most favorite stories from Scarlet Blackwell. The attraction from both men is palpable. The situation of snow storm that "forces" the two to spend both nights adds that nuance of isolation, which makes them getting together seems more intense.
The second part (the one where Hayden returns) is filled with emotion and enough angst. I'm a bit glad that it doesn't go too long, and that it is right in the end. I'm satisfied with how the second part goes.
Ms. Blackwell is well-known (to me anyway) for his jerk characters *grin*. But I don't find that in both Hayden or Dylan. Okay, sure, you can argue that Hayden is married, so what he does with Dylan is cheating, which means that he is a jerk. However, there are many of love stories that start that way (hello Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn!), I guess I keep my annoyance in check. Besides, Hayden doesn't immediately leave his wife ... he stays with her for ten more years and he comes clean to her about the affair. Still, those readers who do not accept infidelity in any kind should consider them being warned

I am little bit surprised but I really really liked this story. It's a rather short story actually, but it covers some tough territory. I found the pain of the characters to be palpable. The actions and motivations of Dylan and Hayden were both surprising and heartbreaking. I'm not necessarily an advocate of self-sacrifice, but I can understand why someone would do it. I do think it's possible for someone to love two people and be torn between a commitment and another desire.
I know some will find it a bit sappy/unrealistic and maybe it's just the mood I'm in, but I really found it very moving. And really? I have plenty of reality and crap to deal with on a daily basis, so I'll take sappy and unrealistic - especially this week.
Oh man, i had high hopes for this book. In the first chapter, this story had potential, but further into the story, I was honestly lost. The flow was smooth in the beginning then suddenly it ends only to be replaced with something with abrupt conclusions.
Also, the main characters clearly have a thing for each other but then they realize that wanting each other is wrong because of certain issues, then, despite their realizations they still go at each other... huh??? then MC leaves to return to his wife... HUH???
This story made me so angry, but it is so good. I have a hard time reading Ms. Blackwell's stories because, while they are good, I always end up hating one of the MC and seeing the other MC as a fool for going through what they did and wishing that MC would find another love and get their HEA with that person. What Hayden did to Dylan was wrong on so many levels and if the circumstances that lead to their HEA didn't happen, he would've just left Dylan to suffer until he died. I absolutely hate Hayden and did not want him to get a HEA with Dylan.
I don’t even have to reread to remember certain scenes and certain heartache at the parting. A good read. As I wrote in my first review, it was an episode and not a pattern. He went home to his wife and it never happened again throughout their marriage. I didn’t agree with reviews calling MC a cheater. * Reread This book just gets better with time. Beautiful writing of the inner thoughts of these two men. Dylan is a fantastic character and Hayden is the love of his life. I’m putting this one in my favorite MM books.
I definitely should have read the reviews before I started this. I don't like cheating, which is happening right away, since Hayden is married. I also wasn't expecting a 12 year separation (and really, why the extra 2). Plus, I wanted both of them to get lost and go hug Will.
So I normally enjoy most of Scarlet Blackwell's work, but this one...sucked! Two night stand! cheating on a wife! twelve years separated!!! And with just a little pffft on Dylans part, with old trusty Will just conveniently walking away so the two MC's can have their HEA! If this review sounds screwy, well guess what! So was this plot! Scarlet you can do so much better than this.
I can't fault the writing. The flow was perfect and kept me engaged the whole time I was listening to it. I had a few problems with content but that is an author's choice and there are plenty of novels published which never crossed any lines. Those stories often end as the cover is closed with no musings afterward. I am now following Ms. Blackwell.
I would have 5 starred this sucker but the fact that their significant others got hurt from their love for each other made me deduct one. I absolutely loved, loved, loved the emotion this story evoked. And yes, I sniffled, okay cried a little bit. So bittersweet. Very, very good read.
Not really sure what to say about this one. I am really not into the cheating aspect of this book as it wasn't done in the heat of the moment. But he does tell his wife as soon as he gets home. I could tell that the MC's really felt something for each other. A very emotion filled book.
I wasn't prepared for the emotion Scarlet Blackwell brought to this short read. Shoulda known better. This was an awesome and surprising treat of sexy goodness.
