This novel is the eagerly awaited sequel to the sensational French bestseller Emmanuelle--the most widely discussed erotic novel since Story of O and currently the most successful French film since Last Tango in Paris.
(French novelist of thaï origin)
Interesting to read only in the context of contrasting the 70's pop "philosophy of sex" with contemporary female French attitudes, such as that of Catherine Millet. The story rambles on and one loses interest quickly.
A very nicely-done sequel to the first "Emmanuelle" novel. Worth it just for the scene at the embassy party and for the final scene on the beach. Again, too talky, too much facile philosophising. But...those two scenes are just stunning. A very hot read.
Philosoporn? Pornlosophy? Socioerotica? How do you describe the genre of "Emmanuelle II," which tries to be both a trashy, titillating read and a treatise on religion, evolution and human nature? The high ambitions of the second Emmanuelle Arsan novel make it much more interesting on an intellectual level than the first volume was, but the authors (the real Arsan and her husband in collaboration) aim so high and so wild here, only a few of the bullets hit.
If nothing else, "Emmanuelle II" is a fascinating litmus test for one's own beliefs. In between all the increasingly weird sex (and weird is absolutely the word- to the point where the book ends with the invention of a bizarre new sex act that can only be described as "orgy by proxy"), the characters debate and espouse their own philosophies, some of which are traditional but many of which are extreme. As you read, you'll be nodding your head saying "okay, that's reasonable," only to see each philosophy gradually taken to its absolute extreme.
It's okay not to be religious... well, how about if the mere act of having a religious faith at all is a moral failing? Monogamous virginal coupling doesn't have to be the ideal... well, how about if the very idea of monogamy, faithfulness or waiting for the right person was an abomination and worse than cheating? It's okay to be gay or bi or fluid... but what if such a thing were essentially mandatory? Some people are prudes and need to loosen up... but what if incest, pedophilia, bestiality and necrophilia were completely acceptable, and there were no taboos at all? Sex work should be legalized and protected... or should ALL sex and relations between partners be commodified as prostitution?
I can never tell if Emmanuelle Arsan is trolling the reader, or if this kind of anything-goes libertinism was the actual ideal in the French intellectual scene. By the time the characters got to the point where they were discussing how there is no such thing as rape because there is no such thing as absence of consent, I was groaning a little. Maybe it's good that most porn is dumb, after all.
