This book is basically a survey course in poetry by British and American authors starting with Chaucer and ending with poets who were still alive at the time of publication in the 1930s. I found. Some old favorites here like Rossetti and Frost. I also discovered some new-to-me works by poets I hadn’t heard of, such as Dyer and Lyly. My personal taste doesn’t favor long narrative poems, and the book has too many for my taste. But the greatest shortcoming is its lack of diversity. There are a smattering of women represented here, but as far as I can tell, every single poet is white. And this after the Harlem Renaissance! All in all, there were only a handful of works in this large tome I’d care to remember.

I have the original print copyright 1932. There is a vast selection of wonderful poetry and excerpts, categorized by author, title, or first line. It includes all the greatest authors from the seventeenth century up to the early twentieth century.
