Dahmer's Not Dead

Rate this book
In November 1994, one of history's most diabolical serial-killers is beaten to death by another inmate in the prison where he was serving fifteen consecutive life sentences. Jeffrey Dahmer is dead. Or is he?

Two weeks after the madman's body is buried, another cannibalistic murder spree begins. Fingerprints, DNA, and modus operandi all link Dahmer to the hideous crimes.

Homicide cop Helen Closs is certain it's all a hoax or a clever copycat...until the night her own phone rings, and Jeffrey Dahmer himself begins to speak...

Dahmer's Not Dead is the latest collaborative effort by acclaimed horror novelist Edward Lee and serial-killer expert Elizabeth Steffen. Don't expect the same explicit hardcore horror that Edward Lee is so well-known for. Instead, Dahmer's Not Dead is a brilliant and technically accurate police-procedural thriller on par with the best crime novelists working today.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.

Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

He was born on May 25, 1957 in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Bowie, Maryland. In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.

Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

It's not horror, it's procedural/thriller. I don't read much in this genre but this one was a lot better than those I read. Much more interesting than Patricia Cornwell's books. IMHO, of course. It was nail-biting all the way. Okay, maybe the process of searching for answers was more interesting than actually getting the answers but it's probably always like that. And I did feel happy with the ending.
All the technical stuff, though... I have no idea how realistic/well-researched it was. But it was fun reading it.
I had a bit of a problem with the heroine having her hormonal *problems*. 42 is a bit early for that, I think, and her reactions were a bit extreme but okay, it happens, too, or course. Anyway, it was a very enjoyable and interesting read.

This hardcover is one of 1000 produced, and is signed by both authors.

Columbus County, Wisconsin, is terrorized by a new cannibal killer whose fingerprints, handwriting and phone voice all match those of the supposedly deceased Jeffrey Dahmer. The press and police are convinced that Dahmer has either faked his death or been resurrected. But Helen Cross, a captain of the Wisconsin State Police Violent Crimes Unit, detects nuances in the crimes that suggest that a copycat with a different m.o. has made a diabolical change in his model's methods.

Lee and Steffen demonstrate the same facility for imagining gruesome crime scenes that highlighted their previous collaborations.

Helen, a bundle of instincts and insecurities that intensify when her investigation implicates her lover, medical examiner Tom Drake, has a personality complex enough to match the intricacies of the plot. Her associates and adversaries come across as little more than ghouls or geeks who primarily discuss cutting-edge forensic techniques in numbing clinical detail.

(This book deserved them, despite all the typos)

Recommended to: Crime thriller or mystery lovers, not necessarily Lee's fans

What I like about this book is it's fast-paced and well-researched. This is the best book of Lee I've encountered so far. I thought I was reading something by Patricia Cornwell or Tess Gerritsen. But no, it's actually written by Ed Lee and Ms. Elizabeth Steffen.

Unlike "Going Monstering", the plot in "Dahmer's Not Dead" is woven carefully and quite nicely, in my opinion. Although the kick-ass main character, Helen Closs, is not as likable as Jack Cordesman (in Lee's "Incubi"), I still enjoyed this book.

In "Dahmer's Not Dead", there are a few characters whose names also appeared in "Incubi". Jan Beck, Larrel Olsher, and even Stewart Arlinger (who's supposed to have changed his name to Stewie Khoronos in "Incubi"). This is interesting. I wonder whether I'll come across those names again in his other works.

Oh, and I like the morgue humor.

Tom: The state regs border on ridiculous, Helen, I even had to do a sex-chromatin test on this bastard—

Beck: You're kidding?

Tom: I wish I was kidding, and after having had the rather immodest opportunity of seeing Mr. Dahmer’s penis with my own eyes, I think I can safely say that the decedent is of the male gender. Or perhaps Helen suspects that a third party attached Dahmer’s penis to someone else’s body.

Helen: Jesus, Tom, you’re so gross.

Tom: Hey, I’m paid to be gross. I’m a medical examiner.

Was danach geschieht ist reine Fiktion.

Well, a neat little novel. It's nothing super fantastic, but it's also not bad. I felt quite entertained, me being interested in serial killers and true crime I automatically have a weak spot for those kinda stories.

The story is interesting enough, though a little dull in some places. I liked the main character, Helen, a lot! She felt very natural and realistic, I liked how she wasn't gonna take bullshit from anyone but still had her insecurities and was also aware of them. She worked nicely for this sorta story, I just wished that a little more would have happened in the story. I think more could have been done with the whole idea of Dahmer not being dead and trying to contact Helen and play with her mind. I thought there might be more "interaction" or mind games. The story itself isn't bad but there aren't any real surprises or shockers. I mean when the book is called "Dahmer's not dead" it's not too surprising when they start doubting who really died in that prison. Nevertheless, the book isn't bad. It tells a good enough story that keeps you interested and the writing style also works very nicely for this sorta story.

I liked the book, it's not the best I have read in this genre, but I thought it was a good read despite all it's little faults. For fans of crime literature I would definitely recommend it, though I'm not sure if true crime/serial killer story fans will get as much out of it.

I can't give this more than a two...and I am being generous. I found the constant barrage of police codes and jargon to be very off putting. I spent many a minute just trying to figure out what they were saying. The medical flaws really got me. You don't sterilize or use sterile equipment for an autopsy! The person is dead!!!! You are not going to give them an infection. The biggest flaw for me was in the description of Succinylcholine (SUX as it is known in the business). Sux is not given orally. It is given IV and can be given Intramuscularly. Forensic detection of Succinylcholine was a major problem until the 2000s as it could not be distinguished from normal body processes. This was later solved but this book was published in 1999. The Succinylcholine errors were compounded with 2 major flaws. Sux lasts minutes, not hours. also, Sux paralyzes all striated muscle including the diaphragm and rib muscles. In other words, you stop breathing and die. You can't just be given Sux and hauled around as a captive!

I usually don't get this picky in my reviews but gross medical errors steam me. It would be so easy to just check a few facts with an expert instead of just looking foolish.....I am available for authors if anyone needs medical questions answered, BTW! :-)

Die Büchergnomen "Edward Lee & Elizabeth Steffen - Dahmer's not dead"

(...)Edward Lee, the master of obscenity, writes a book with Elizabeth Steffen, an expert for serial-killers, about Jeffrey Dahmer?! Be serious: that's awesome as fuck! How bloody, perverse, repulsive, disturbing and sick will it be?!
So far in advance: not at all! And that's what makes it so awesome! (...)

Not bad, not bad t’all. Not what I was expecting really, but I was happy just the same.
No splatter here, no explicit gore really at all, instead a cool “what if” story involving the infamous Mr. Dahmer.
Tons of cop-talk, slang and lingo, it was awesome. Again, I love the authenticity of the procedures, the tech, the terminology. Most of the jargon used might seem confusing, but taken in context, you know exactly what’s going on at any given moment.
Some cool twists here and there, the lines blurred between fact and fiction, and I had a really good time overall.
(Always keep your eyes peeled for the Edward Lee easter eggs)

Not the typical Lee story

When I first say Edward Lees name on this book, I was ready for another glorious gore infused story. What I got instead was a meticulous, well thought out police procedural. It was absolutely thrilling and full of the best kind of suspense. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend this for fans of Edward Lee looking for something different or for fans of thrillers looking for another unique voice.

This was a fun read. Despite it being co wrote by Edward Lee, extreme horror is most definitely not. It's more a thriller and police procedural. As it is it's still fun and the main character is very likeable, just don't expect any gore or gross out value.

Took a while to get into it but the last quarter of the book was worth the wait.

One thing though - better care on the editing - the atrocious typos constantly took me right out of the story!

But loved the ending!

A plodding plot, one dimensional characters. Most of the time I felt I was reading a dull Forensics textbook. Bad. I suspect that the only contribution Edward Lee made to this book was his name.

An interesting read. If you're expecting Edward Lee style, over the top gore and graphic violence, you're in the wrong place. Very much a police procedural, and a fairly solid one at that. If you liked the movie "Se7en," you'll probably feel at home here too.

Wow, I have to start with that word. I could start with a lot of other words strung together, but they would be swear words and I don't think that would be the best idea!! This book dives right into the atrocities done by Jeffrey Dahmer culminating to when he is finally caught and arrested in 1991. The writing in the prologue is so very detailed. You could literally be watching this through the police officers body cameras (if there had been body cameras back in 1991). You are seeing the same disgusting, revolting, unimaginable horror inside of the serial killer's apartment at the same time the police officers are. There are hands hanging from a closet, something gross is cooking on the stove in the large lobster pot, a 57 gallon industrial drum is sitting in the living room, a head is in a box next to the frig, on the bed there are severed limbs and this is just what is in plain sight. Jeffrey Dahmer is now in prison of course, his parole date is the year 2927. He is killed inside the prison in 1994. That is the true ending of this true live monster that had been living amongst us.

As for this book, it is not the ending, it is just the beginning of this very disturbing, disgusting, vile, atrocious and horrific "what if" book. It is a crime drama, a great police science/technical book, very detailed, and on top of that a little horror in the mix. It is also a ..... "What if". "What if" Jeffrey Dahmer had not died in that prison? "What if" he escaped? "What if" someone paid for him to get out by setting up someone else to get beat to death and killed? "What if" that someone was beat so badly around his face, and head, that basically the entire skull was unrecognizable and the teeth were no help with id'ing this male prisoner either. Meaning that in 1994 there was no possible way to make a positive ID due to the condition of the body and some human errors the body was not id'ed properly. The prison had a dead male and they just assumed it was Jeffrey Dahmer. Because Jeffrey Dahmer was gone. "What if" he had just changed clothes and walked or drove right out of prison. Drove right out of prison to start his reign of terror all over again, but this time much more violent, bloody and distributing. "What if" Jeffrey Dahmer had help from the outside. "What if" it was a conspiracy. If you want answers to all of that, this book is for you. It is a fast pace thrilling read. It keeps you guessing and speed reading to the very last page. I truly think you will be captured by this books detailed writing and story, I know I was. It is an 18 and over book, due to violence, sexual content, cannibalism and language.

One of the things I like about Edward Lee is his lack of restraint when it comes to his descriptive passages of violent acts in his novels. What I like about this book is his restraint when it comes to the descriptive passages of violent acts. Confusing? Not really. Lee and Steffen create a thriller that can rival any out there, with a very interesting premise. The plot is tight and well researched, and moves along without a hitch. I would have liked more splatter, but when I realized it was not a "horror" novel and something new and different was being tried with this book, I accepted it and saw that it was done well.

Very different for Edward Lee, this is a twisty turny police procedural novel about an investigator trying to figure out a string of murders that are supposedly being committed by the recently deceased Jeffrey Dahmer. For much of the book I was confused and not thrilled with the book, but the way the crazy plot ties together at the end is actually pretty brilliant, and redeems much of the distastefulness of writing fiction about a real serial killer who killed real people. Not Lee's best work, but an interesting and highly experimental mystery novel.

Not the splatterpunk gore that Edward Lee is best known for, but a fairly straightforward police procedural. It gets most of the facts about Dahmer correct; some have been changed to fit the narrative, and others I'm pretty sure are because of all the misinformation about Dahmer that no one's ever bothered to correct. It's a good pageturner; I mostly read Important Books and needed something like this. It suffers from some poor editing, though, which I find difficult to reconcile when I read since it's my job and I can't turn it off.

Well written, good characters, and a page turning story. Jeffrey Dahmer is murdered while incarcerated, but after a killer purporting to be Dahmer begins a murder spree. The investigating detective doesn't believe Dahmer did it, how could he? but the evidence suggests it was Dahmer! I enjoyed this very much.
