This book provides readers with a state-of-the-art overview of operations management. It shows the fundamental principles of operations and how they relate to effectively producing goods and services. A thorough discussion of service operations recognizes the fact that a dominant proportion of jobs and operations decisions exist in services. Strong global emphasis (includes international, multi-domestic, global, and transnational strategies) demonstrates to readers how world economies tie together. Other chapter topics cover operations and productivity; operations strategy for competitive advantage; operations in a global environment; forecasting; managing quality; statistical process control; 7s: operations technology, the internet, and ERP; human resources and job design; supply chain management; e-commerce and operations management; project management; and maintenance and reliability. For individuals interested in operations managementand the challenges of cultural, ethical, and critical issues in business today.
I know my "good reads" friends out there are not likely to go out and get this book, but I figured I should give myself credit for the text I am currently reading and finally post a book in the "my books" section :)
This text is perfect for the online Operations Management course that I am taking. The organization is straight forward and simple to follow. Examples are relevant to corporate problems today and ethical dilemmas are extremely thought provoking.
My favorite part about this text is how the authors provide a "Global Company Profile" at the beginning of each chapter. The profile is kept to two pages and identifies a unique company (Dell, Boeing, Disney World, etc.) and details how they succeed using the materials that will be discussed in the same chapter. It has been both fun and interesting to read these quick tidbits of info, and I appreciate a reading break from the monotony of a typical text book.
Note to self: Main text for Mgt 105: Production and Operations Management under Prof. Manuel C. Manuel III of the UP College Business Administration, Second Semester 1997-98.
