A child’s birth. His first teeth and first steps. School friends and bullies, recess, school plays and science projects. A girl, a crush and a broken heart. These childhood experiences are shared by countless little boys from different horizons.

And yet… Jacob is anything but average. For as long as he has been able to understand, a secret has shaped his life, kept even from his closest friends: his father, Andrew, is a vampire. And so is his other father, Nicholas.

In a strange era when demons are beginning to appear all over the world and threaten humans and vampires alike, the three of them form quite an extraordinary family. And yet, at the same time, they could hardly be more normal.

Two fathers raising a son neither of them ever thought he would have. A Sire and Childe resuming their relationship after years of estrangement. Through snapshots covering Jacob’s life from birth to adulthood, discover this unusual family, and how, in the end, all it takes is love.

Kallysten is a writer of romance novels and short stories, most of them with paranormal elements.

Her first eBooks were published by Linden Bay Romance in 2005. The defunct Venus Press subsequently published a few of her short stories. Because so many of her stories are linked as series and part of the same universe, she decided it would make sense to have them all in the same place, which is why she self-published, first with the co-op Alinar Publishing and now on her own. When she sees calls for submissions that speak to her muse, she sometimes tries for them, and was published this way by Samhain and Torquere.

Meh.

While there were *aspects* of the book that dealt with vampires and demons, this book didn't totally delve into the subject matter in the way that I wished it would have.

I could very easily see the supernatural aspects of this story being removed entirely, without the book changing all that much.

At its core, you basically have a story of a single father whose past lover returns to help him raise his newborn son to adulthood.

That's it. Other than typical day-to-day events of raising a kid, there wasn't nearly enough action on-page in this story to keep me fully invested.

Don't get me wrong, this was a good story, but I kept waiting for the big vampire vs. demon fight scenes to happen, but was only ever given quick summaries, after the "battles" had happened.

The book felt as if, whenever it didn't quite know where to go next, it would fall back on Andrew and Nicholas having sex. Repeatedly, which got to be a bit much for me.

Also, this didn't *really* feel like a romance to me. For the first half of the book, Andrew seemed to only tolerate Nicholas' presence, somewhat appreciating Nicholas' help in raising his child. This got quite a bit better as the book progressed, yet there were still no "I love you's" to be seen, even by the final page. :- /

I'd rate this one at around 3.25 stars, but after reviews of the second book saying that it's basically a retelling of events in this first book, without even wrapping up the plot line with the demons, I doubt I'll invest the time to read it.

Le sigh.

Okay...I'm calling it at 39%

Clicking around on GR I came across this book. I was so excited because it looked different and had some really good reviews. Unfortunately, it didn’t work as well for me as I hoped. But please don't let this stop you from reading this book. Maybe I shouldn't have read it right after a 5 star read where I could really see how the mc's loved and cared for each other. But here, there were just things that didn't work for me that may not bother other people.
Here’s why:
🔹There’s a dead ex. I knew this going in based on other reviews. What I didn’t know or didn’t care for was how Andrew continued to think about Cara and feel guilty for having a relationship with Nicholas “so soon” after her death. Yes, they begin to put things back together just months after. But 5 years down the road and he is STILL feeling guilty. Apparently, it didn’t matter that he was in a relationship with Nicholas way before Cara. He didn’t seem to harbor any guilt over being with her while Nicholas wasn’t around.
🔹I never really felt Andrew and Nicholas actually loved each other. Oh they have great chemistry and sexual tension. They seemed to pick up right back where they left off years ago. But they constantly seemed to never show a loving side towards each other. They certainly did to Jacob so I know they were capable. But I just never really felt the romance portion between them. I don't know about anybody else, but if I read a romance book, I want actual romance and I just didn't feel it here.
🔹This was pretty much the icing on the cake for me. Andrew is jealous that Jacob wanted to call Nicholas his dad too. When I read stories where there are kids involved, one of the things I love the most are when the kid calls the new person mommy or daddy….daddy in this case. I was really looking forward to them becoming a true family in this sense. I really didn’t like that Andrew had issues with it. He knew Nicholas loved Jacob and took care of him as if he was his own. He should have been happy that Jacob wanted that connection with Nicholas too. But it seemed all he was good for was being a glorified babysitter and wasn't worthy of the title "dad".
🔹There's really not much in the way of demons or vampires. Take that out, and this could have just been about two men getting back together after a few years of separation. I didn't necessarily need a bunch of action, but we are told numerous times of nightly hunts, injuries, fights etc but we don't get to see any of it.

Now not to say everything was bad with this. There were a few things that I liked.
🔸I absolutely adored when we got Jacob’s POV. This was one of the things that caught my attention with this book…that we get a child’s perspective at different times.
🔸I liked the writing. Even if nothing really "happens" so far, it kept me engaged. I just got tired of the lack of romance and then Andrew being jealous just turned me off and I lost interest after that.

As I said, I stopped at 39%. I have no idea how things went from there. I would definitely encourage others to read this for themselves and make up their own mind. There were many who have enjoyed it and didn't have the issues I had.

How sweet can be a paranormal story with a baby?

Very... very sweet

Andrew is vampire, the owner of a Special Task Force against demons, and most of all, Andrew is a widower.
The story begin is the saddest and happiest moment of his life... The birth of his son, and the lost of his wife.
When I read those first pages I was already thinking it was a big mistake... I was searching for a light book... something to distract me from the hardness of real life. Well, it took only more few pages and everything changes. Nicholas (Nick) appears in the story.

Nicholas is the funniest character. After almost a century away from his Sire he is accepted again in his house. I got some problems with the concept Nicholas was a killer (explained as he kill only humans that was blood donors to vampires, but in my view it's always a murder... no?). But well, ignoring it I love Nicholas. He is funny, and he is the best partner Andrew could find to help him to raise Jacob.

Jacob was the best surprise of the book. He will be the narrator at the age of two! And OMG that was SO DAMN CUTE! I love his voice, and his innocence was so unexpected! I mean, it's so hard to do it! A writer able to create an infant as main character, and write his POV? Amazing.. I love it and certainly was a very sweet surprise (I was not expecting a child as narrator, so I was really surprised)

I loved the light theme, two suborn (but in love) men trying to do the best they can to make a child happy and feel loved... I adored the drama too... And most of all, I was exultant with Jacob first person narration! You will read Jacob voice, from 2 to 17 years old, and that was really amazing... I liked it a lot!

My only two criticisms are:

The rush.. The start is in a "normal" pace and then the writer started to jump a lot of years. I miss more details, but I must admit it would be a lot, to one already long (but delightful) story.

The lack of paragraphs marks when the narrator (or scene) change. I got confused, more than one time... The narrators can be everyone from the book, and I think I would be less confused if there was some paragraphs marks to help me to get when the POV changed.
And also the scenes!!!!!! The worst part was after a sex scene (there is some explicit sex parts, all very good and I liked all!) the writer change to Jacob talking and I really got scared ! I took something like 2 lines understand the scene was another (and thanks GOD Jacob was not there with his father and Nicholas)! I went on, still thinking how gross that could be!
I think some easy and very great things to tell the reader the POV will change are
***
or
skip a line, starting a new paragraph AWAAAAAAAAAAY from the sex, if the kid will be the narrator

Anything! Anything that would show when the POV changed, to avoid such possible gross mental image forever printed in my brain!!!

But guys, English is not my first language... maybe it's only me, and no other reader would be so confused all the time, trying to understand who is the narrator.

So 4 stars,
I'll certainly read more of this serie! (the end is not definitive! I can't wait to read more!)

This book is something special, unique plot line, beautifully executed.

Vampire partners Andrew and Nicholas are left to raise Andrew's half-vampire son Jacob after his mother dies in childbirth. This book charts Jacob's life from birth to aged 17. Andrew also runs a 'Special Enforcer Agency' that is battling the growing demon menace.

'Sometimes his daddy wasn't in his office, and that usually meant he was wrestling with Nicholas in the training room or in the bedroom. They wrestled a lot. They never wanted Jacob to play with them, though, and that just wasn't fair.'

I know, that was a low blow, having a small baby on the cover trying to attract unaware women with the strong power of their maternal instinct… problem is that, I’m not really a motherly type, and in any case I fell for the trick. But the cover, the blurb, a mix of both pushed me not only to buy the book but also to read it as soon as I downloaded the file.

Fangs & Lullabies is everything cover and blurb promised, a story about two unlikely fathers, not only since there is now woman around to play the role of the mother, but also since they are vampires. Andrew is the older and wiser and he is also the one who chase away Nicholas when he started to feed and kill humans. That was almost 100 years ago and in the meantime Andrew built another life, and other relationships, the last of which with a woman, Cara, the mother of his son Jacob. Jacob is a little miracle himself, vampires cannot father children, but Cara was a specialist in the fertility field and she found a way; problem is that, after 19 years of relationship, she was probably not so young anymore and the pregnancy was also her death sentence. She died in childbirth and Andrew was left alone with a little baby to rise. When Nicholas comes back, he doesn’t know about Jacob; he is not coming back to help Andrew, he is coming back since he cannot live no more without Andrew. Andrew is Nicholas’s sire, and Nicholas feels the pull every childe has towards his sire.

It’s strange but all the paranormal side of the story, Nicholas and Andrew being vampires, how one is a sire and the other a childe, how their life was before, the fact that they are centuries years old, everything seems to disappear when Jacob enters their life: from that moment on, they are only two fathers, rising a baby alone, not being ready to do so, and probably, if they have to be true to themselves, not planning to do that. After the prologue, where the author plans out all the details for the story, and give the readers the necessary “paranormal” elements, the novel takes a very precise pace, that of Jacob’s life; every chapter is a year in Jacob’s life, from 1 to 17 years old. Sometime the story is even told from Jacob’s point of view, who, like any other baby in the world, looks at his father, Andrew, like an hero, and so it’s not strange for him that he is out, fighting the bad guys. But again, Andrew’s job as demon hunter, everything happening outside their home, remains exactly there, outside.

I think the author did a good job in making the story believable (and yes, even with Andrew and Nicholas being vampires) without making nor Andrew or Nicholas the “wife”: Nicholas is indeed the one who is more at home, taking care of Jacob and effectively being the one raising him, but always waiting for Andrew to come back home and taking the important decisions… of course also planning everything to be sure that decisions matched the one Nicholas already took.

Two Vampires and a Baby - sounds like the beginning to a joke, right? This is what author Kallysten has written about in this book "Fangs & Lullabies" which is book one in the series "The Demon Age". The vampires in this story are Andrew who is Sire to Nicholas. When the story begins we meet Andrew with his human girlfriend, Cara, of twenty years as she is giving birth to their son, Jacob. Cara doesn't survive long into the story, leaving Jacob who she conceived using advanced science and magic, with Andrew. Not long after, Nicholas shows up on his Sire's doorstep vowing he has changed his ways and has returned to his sire. When Nicholas finds out about Jacob he steps up to help his Sire raise the motherless child.

This story goes through the life of Jacob each chapter a different year as he is growing up and showing different things that Andrew, Nicholas, and Jacob dealt with as a "blended" family. I say blended because this story takes place in a world where Vampires are known by humans yet not allowed to raise a child, as if anyone would ever believe a vampire could sire a human child. No they more than likely would have accused and killed Andrew & Nicholas for kidnapping a human baby. Needless to say this was one secret they all worked to hide.

As Jacob got older and traits of his vampire genetics started appearing such as super strength, speed, fast healing and excellent hearing, Andrew & Nicholas taught Jacob how to hide these traits and blend in with the human kids. They were able to hide their family dynamics until Jacob becomes a teenager and falls in love, sharing his families secret with his girlfriend. At that point Andrew has to decide whether to use magic or enthralling the girl to make her forget or to take a chance and let the girl in to their inner circle.

I enjoyed this story and watching the years go by the way the author wrote them. I really loved how the author rotated the view points throughout each chapter so the reader got an in-depth look at how each character felt. There were some parts of this story that had me laughing and some parts that made me chest hurt with those good ol' Feelz. I look forward to the next story in the series and wonder if we will see Andrew, Nicholas, and Jacob again. I can't help but wonder if Jacob would want to be turned as he gets older and starts to understand mortality more and how his two Dad's would have dealt with that - I also would have loved to see poor Andrew deal with Jacob going off to college, getting married, having kids... The story ends with Jacob age 17, so hopefully we will get to see more!

This isn’t a story about two guys falling in love, apparently that all happened a 100 years beforehand. It isn’t even a story about their getting back together, because that takes all of 5 pages. Really this is just a slice of life story, granted a vampire life, that takes place over 17 years. 4.5 Stars in the end I think.

Andrew has spent almost 20 years with Cara and he couldn’t deny her her one wish, to have a child with him. It shouldn’t have been possible, he was a vampire after all, but Cara was incredible, a genius, and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Years of work, most likely a little magic, and a little more than 8 months of pregnancy later Andrew has a son of his own flesh and blood, but at the expensive of Cara. She never even got to see the boy she’d fought so hard to bring into this world. Andrew’s whole life has one purpose now, his son, Jacob.

Nicholas was made a vampire almost 100 years previously when he finally convinced his lover that it was what he wanted. When he couldn’t stop himself from killing his donors though his Sire threw him out. Andrew told him he would always welcome him back though if he could stop killing. That was almost 80 years ago. Now Nicholas hasn’t taken a life in almost 3 years and he wants to come home. Nothing matters more to him than getting back in Andrew’s good graces. Granted he never expected Andrew to have remained celibate all this time, Nick sure didn’t expect him to have a son.

First things first, I loved these three characters. I really enjoyed seeing Jacob grow up and become a handsome, intelligent young man. He was such an adorable kid and Nick and Andrew were the perfect balance of over-protective and yet doting parents. Every time Andrew got too uptight and stingy Nick was there to get him to loosen the reins a bit, and every time Nick was all set to let Jacob do something totally crazy Andrew was there to reel him back in. These two were they type of parents every kid wishes they could have, understanding, fair, and yet not too lenient (even if every kid doesn’t know that’s what they should want in a parent). Kids need boundaries and Jacob had that with all the love in the world to let him grow up and experience everything they way he should.

Now I wish certain things were explored more. The Special Enforcers job that Andrew and Nick (on occasion) do, well I would have liked to see a little bit more of how this affected them personally. We’re told that they’ve gone out and we see the results, but everything that goes on in this book is focused on what happens within the four walls of that mansion. I would have liked to see more time spent on the relationship between Andrew and Nick and not just on how it relates to Jacob. Also I would have liked to have seen more explanation and exploration of what exactly it means for Jacob to be so different. Clearly he has some vampire powers to some extent, but he’s human. What is all of this going to mean for him going forward? As a little kid it would have been fun to see him accidently doing a few more crazy things because of them. He was a little too well behaved at times. Kids make mistakes and for the sake of the novel he could have made them at home and not ended up outing them all to the world.

Now, I ABSOLUTELY ADORED the section where Nick and “Andy” got turned into 5 year olds. Oh my god they were the sweetest, most adorable, little pests ever. There is actually a really good balance in this book of seeing things from all the characters perspectives, Jacob’s included. You never questioned whose head you were in, but also you never questioned what age they were either. Both with Jacob when he was younger, and here with Nick and Andy, you really got the sense for their actual age. I really enjoyed that aspect of this writing.

I think my biggest complaint with this book is that it just ends. Really abruptly. Nothing really happens anywhere. It’s a coming of age story for Jacob, but nothing changes, there’s no real major event anywhere. There’s a hint of one with Andrew and Nicholas’ final discussion, but I think if the words had actually been spoken that specifically and not just hinted around I would have felt a little more closure to this book. We’ve gone the whole novel without things being said, just hinted around, to close the book with the actual words would have felt like somehow there was growth and thus it was ok that we were leaving this family.

All in all though I enjoyed my read because these characters were such fun. I liked this family and I want to know where they end up. I want to know more about how this all makes Jacob so different and if he does go into Enforcer training. I want to see Andrew and Nicholas tear down a few more walls between them and what will happen with Jacob is out of the house. My issues here were minor really. I just wanted that little extra dollop of whip cream on my cake. ☺

4.5 stars for this new (at least to me) take on the "one child, two dads" theme. The premise of two male vampires raising a non-vampire boy really appealed to me. I also liked how the author broke the story down to time periods within the child's life as he was growing up.

Overall this was a really good book and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Interesting twist...vampire with a somewhat human child wrought through extreme sacrifice PLUS a Childe (vampire "offspring"). Almost a series of short stories tied together by watching the child grow up. Great combination of humor, realistic jealousy and resentment, and romance--although that is vigorously opposed for much of the story. Most vivid is the role reversal that results in the guys being able to enjoy the sun...funny yet poignant episode.

I admit I feel a little disappointed with this one.

The parts with Jacob were sweet. I loved seeing him at all ages.

My disappointment is the way this one was told. I thought I was just going to get the Jacob ages, but there's another story with demons that left me feeling disjointed. I wish the author had stuck to one theme or the other. The demon story with more detail could of been an interesting read and it would of worked with a few Jacob moments included. But instead it was all thrown together and nothing felt detailed enough. There was also the sex scenes that occurred to often for me and again they never felt smooth.

While I liked Andrew and Nicolas as fathers I can't say I liked them much as lovers. In fact I started to dislike Andrew at the end for continuing a punishment that he had already decided was un needed. I felt no chemistry either.

Overall this was a nice idea but ended up feeling more like the outline of a good story, and by age 14 I'd started to just want to get it finished so I could move on to something else.

This was an unique vampire story. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style. At first I thought just getting a snippet of each year would leave me feeling unsatisfied, but that wasn't the case. The story moved along at a fast pace, but with enough detail for it to give the reader plenty of information.

All three of these males that made up a very different family grabbed my heart equally. Andrew and Nicholas had a wonderful relationship with each other, although a long way from perfect, and how they parented Jacob as a real team was lovely to read. Jacob turned out to be one of the best children I had ever read, and my only problem was those special little words that didn't get said.

Once again Kallysten sets herself apart from the masses with her own special style of storytelling. This novel was written in such a unique way that I've never read anything like it before. Each chapter is dedicated to a year in the life of one of the three main characters, Jacob. These years span from birth through his 17th year.

Another thing that's truly unique to this book is that there's really only protagonists in it. There is no real villain or conflict that needs to be overcome. Yes there are bad guys, demons actually, but this story is more than that. This story is about a reunited vampire Sire (maker) named Andrew and his Childe, Nicholas (progeny). It's about these men as they reunite and become part of each others lives again. The romantic element is their relationship morphing from your basic Sire/Childe thing into something much more stronger, a true partnership. And some hot and frequent sex 0f course . I mean, it is by Kallysten. It's also about these two vampire males learning how to become fathers to the most amazing little boy (Jacob). It's about FAMILY - complete with the good, the bad and the amazing moments that are the realities of life. And perhaps the most important thing that Fangs and Lullabies is about is that it makes it perfectly clear that family dynamics are family dynamics. It doesn't matter if the parents are straight or gay or yes, even vampires (at least for the vamps in her world that is LOL!)

Kallysten has a fabulous gift when it comes to creating a connection between her characters and her readers. I always seen to be falling for at least one of the males in her stories. Here's me reaction to the one in this one:

Andrew: I'm not sure if I'd be too fond of him if he was real and in my life. However, he definitely has my respect. He's one of those men that has a commanding and powerful presence but he's too uptight and buttoned up for me. He's also really strict. I could easily see him as a career military man with the way he acts sometimes. He does love his son something fierce though.

Nicholas: What a delightful guy! I love how he needles Andrew. It's always so fun watching him rile up his stern Sire. I admire his strength. Andrew's one unbreakable rule - no feeding off or killing humans - must be hard from him to adhere to. After 100 years of feasting on humanity he managed to overcome an addiction that is worse than crack IMHO. You know, because vamps live off blood. I'm proud that he pulled himself from that dangerous precipice so he could be by his Sire's side. It amazes me that he just jumped right in when he learned of Jacob. He's an excellent father.

Jacob: OMG. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE HIM!! Call me a cougar if you want to 'cause he's only 17 by the end of this book - I don't care. He is simply the perfect male. He has such a pure soul. Of this I can be no more certain. Why? Because I watched him grow up. He will be quite an astonishing man when he's fully matured. He's such a brave young man and there's not an arrogant bone in his body.

While reading I couldn't help but wish for something more. I think that this is both a good and a bad thing. Seeing as this is a series, I should want more, but because of the way it was written it seemed that there was something missing. Maybe it was the timing. Andrew's reluctance to come to terms with some things seemed to take forever and it frustrated me.

If you want to experience something completely new, read Kallysten's Fangs and Lullabies. I promise you, you won't be disappointed. The vividness of Kallysten's words make the characters come to life right off the pages. They easily show that true love and devotion are truly the keys to it all.

One could say that this is the Seinfeld of love stories: on the surface, it is about nothing, but it is really about one of the most important things in life - family. Fangs and Lullabies is not your traditional male-male love story where two men meet cute and fall in love. Rather, our main characters have already met cute-ish (if turning a human into a vampire can fit this paradigm), broken up, and a century later, reconciled. Theirs is definitely a love story, though. It is simply one that focuses on the love that three people are sharing over the course of a life -- 18 years to be precise -- as these two men come together and agree to raise a child.

Each chapter relates a vignette in a year of the child's life, and we see how the men and the child grow both individually and as a unit. We see devotion; we see mistakes; we see forgiveness; we see maturity. We are drawn into this family's story and sometimes feel a little bit like voyeurs because the author pulls back the curtain and shows us the intimate details of an imperfect, yet highly functional family unit. The story is cautious and slow, and yet, the pacing is just right, and for me at least, I didn't want the story to end. This novel was wonderful, and when I was finished, I wanted to go back to the beginning and start it all over again.

Highly recommended.

So much could have gone wrong with this book and honestly, I loved it. I can see how some may find it boring and long (it is a long one), but it was written very well and the characters in this book are well done. Each chapter is a year in Jacob's life as the family navigates a business killing demons and having 2 vampires raise a quasi human baby. In the end the same things transpire as you would think in a 'normal' household, bullies, dangers, girlfriends, drinking, learning to fight, super human strength..hee. There are some things that are not covered in this book and leave the author full license to create another book. Why the demons? Why then? What are Jacob's true abilities? What is his roll in the world after his 17 year? Will those two knuckle heads declare their love? I hope we get to find out.

I love vampires, but...

I don't usually like kids in my books, however without Jacob there would be no story. This is a totally different story than most books I've read as it's told in snippets and not a lot of time is spent on the details. The entire book covers the first 18 years of Jacob's life, from his tragic birth to how he is being raised by his two vampires dads, Andrew and Nicholas.

I will definitely be moving on to the next book. I need for Andrew to tell Nicholas he loves him or I will be very upset at the end of this series.

Cute story about two guys who raise their son over 18 years. The only frustrating thing was the denial/blinding of their feelings for each other.

I liked this story apart from when Andrew and Nicholas became children. This story is more a condensed type of diary and follows Jacob from birth till his late teens.

This book starts with Andrew and Cara. One vamp and one human. Both made a child by mixing both dna. Now 9 months on and Cara has passed away in childbirth and Andrew is left to bring up the baby by himself.

A bit further on in the book when Andrew is learning to bring up the baby (Jacob). He gets a visit from a Vampire named Nicholas turned up wanting to stay. Andrew was the one to change Nick into a vampire but made him leave because he couldn't stop killing humans but now he's back and given up his old life.

Nicholas got a shock when he found out about baby Jacob and he not only had to deal with having to keep himself from killing but learn how to bring up a child as well.

As the book goes on Andrew and Nicholas find there feeling for each other had come back with force and the three of them became a family. Along side all the new beginnings both men had to deal with fighting demons and keeping each other safe. The love that came from both men was totally amazing.

Over all view:

Well iv been waiting to read this book for such a long time and I'm so glad I finally got my hands on a copy. Well it started out making me cry when we were in the hospital room and Andrew was coming to terms with the death of Cara, omg what a way to start, it was so emotional and all most had me crying like a baby. Then we meet Nicholas and omg this guy made my heart swoon. he was my favourite out of the guys because he was hot guy with a dark and funny side. Wat i loved about this book was that we got to see Jacobs point of view and i had such a chuckle. he was so cute. This book was moving and funny and heartwarming and yes we do see a steamy side to Andrew and Nicholas relationship. If i had to start my life again and i could do it any way I wanted I would grow up in there household because I could feel the love jumping from the page and I think Kellysten has done an amazing work with this original story line

How this story came to be...

I toyed with the idea of writing a sequel to Baby Steps for a while, to explore the idea of the 'vampire dad', and I had even started throwing down ideas for an outline But the more I thought about it, the more I wished the child would have some special abilities, too. I scraped the idea of a sequel and decided to start from scratch.

Something else I had been thinking about was the return of the demons. They were sealed away in Her Last Words, so what brought them back in the Demons Age series? At the back of my mind, I knew it was through some kind of magic, and I also know how vampires came to be (I need to write that story, one day!). Combine all that with the thought of a vampire fathering a child, and I had my beginning: a magic spell that allows the birth of a half-vampire baby... but that also reopens the 'rips' between our dimension and the demons'.

As I started jotting down ideas, it became clear that the story would not have a traditional plot, with a mission or goal for the heroes to reach. Their 'goal' is to raise a child, and the story developed as snapshots of their lives, some short, some mini-stories within the story, and all with the goal of showing that, as weird as this family is, the love that unites these two vampire dads and their son is the same love shared by countless other parents and children.

The list of anecdotes I wanted to tell was just too long, and I had to pick and choose what would end up in this book to get some sense of unity. The parts that didn't make it in ended up revolving more closely around the spell, the fight against the demons, and the child discovering bit by bit who and what he is. These parts will end up forming a second volume to come in 2012, Demons and Lullabies.

Friends and Readers! Read. This. Book! You won't regret!!

You would think this by the title, it might be shallow, cliché, boring someone else's baby book. I don't know about you, but I did. And Wrong. I was so Wrong. There is a reason why this books's rating is so high though the number of how many people have rated is relatively small.

I feel like I really know them, understand them, three of them as individual and family. This book is not about vampire's lusciousness, not only about raising a baby, not only two-daddy family. This is about life, love, and family. There are vampire moments, the baby moments, prejudice toward their yet uncommon family. But the point, at the end of the day, is how they deal with the issues, how normal their issues are, how they love each other just like any other family.

This book doesn't tell you anything directly to you. Just draw lots of pictures of three of them together. And you just know, how unique yet normal they are.

I love how Nicolas play good cop and Andrew bad cop. They are really a perfect pair, complementing each other's traits so well. And there are some hawwwwd love makings between Andrew and Nicolas. ;)

POV changes quite often, but the main is Jacob's. It doesn't bother getting into the story or anything, if not more interesting. It's well written.

I already bought Demons and Lullabies. Looking forward to see more of their family after Jacob turned 17.

I definitely recommend it.

I truly see the appeal of the book: vampires hunting demons for the good of society and at the same time being devoted to the child they raise together.

There might be tiny stabs of disappointment if you were expecting ANYTHING to do with vampires or demons actually happening in this book, though! The plot solely focuses on family life and some thrilling questions, such as whether whether the kid will call his father's partner 'dad' and how his father has to then deal with this (because, big drama, he's now jealous of his lover!). Apart from the week plot (with no climax whatsoever), what irked me even more was the fact that I expected a sweet/ warm/ fluffy story. You would, with a baby on the cover, wouldn't you? But for me at least, the book did not even deliver on that account. I found Prince Among Wolves in this regard much more rewarding.

So, if you're interested in a drawn out, very detailed account of every year in the life of a kid with two vampire dads, go for it. But only then.

I honestly didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. It was fabulous!

This was a story in which the “child” (Jacob) was a very prominent character and added so much to my reading enjoyment overall. Then, of course, there was the “Childe” (Nicholas) who was mischievous and sexy and surprisingly often the most logical of the father figures when it came to raising Jacob. I loved how the story was told in chronological chapters covering a year of Jacob’s life.

From the very first unexpectedly heart-wrenching chapter to the last one in which Jacob learns life’s lessons the hard way and Andrew has to let him grow up, I found myself glued to the pages. Some of it was funny and many times I found myself surprised at how accurately perceptive the author was to capture something that represented a particular age group or role just perfectly.

I definitely plan to check out more of this series and more by this author in general. Loved this one!!!

Now this was a good book. Good, interesting characters that were developed and you invested in; very unique storyline and twist on vampire theme and some humor; I enjoyed it very much. That said I would have liked a little more delving into the storyline of Andrew's demon hunting and something resolved there and maybe something on the fact that he had a human child and what was going to happen or how they planned on handling his mortality and all but I understand there are more books so maybe it is addressed there? I will have to find out because this author is definitely worth another look.

This was a nice and sweet story about 2 vampires and how they raised a child. It was quite nice to read yet another view on vampires. I did find the structure of the book a bit hard to get used to, because each chapter portrayed one year of Jacob's life, however in that year the time the events happened sometimes got a little bit confusing. I sometimes needed to go back to read over a segment because I didn't know if it was still the same day, a day later or even a week or month later. Other than that it was very nice story xD

This book surprised me. It was very sweet without being sappy or boring. I really enjoyed the pieces in Jacob's (the son) POV. I also really liked how each chapter was a portion of each year of Jacob's life from 1 - 17. I think that helped it from dragging.

It didn't have much drama, but I didn't feel like it wasted any of the pages, either. Definitely recommended.
