Long a best-seller in the field, A History of Western Society examines the lives of historic figures and ordinary people from an extraordinary perspective--and sustains that vision with an engaging, lively writing style. While social and economic history are areas of special emphasis, the authors pay careful attention to traditional political and cultural developments, providing a balanced, well-rounded view of Western history as a whole. The Sixth Edition offers a wider geographic/ethnic scope, with added coverage of Eastern Europe, the Celtic region, and Islam and Muslims.
Good survey of the development of history and world societies. Loved reading about the Roman Empire and Hellenic/Hellenistic civilization especially, especially since I can cross-pollinate that with my readings on philosophy and how the development of these societies influenced Ancient Greek philosophers and later Christian theology. Lost a bit of steam around the period from Charlemagne - the Middle Ages. May need to re-review those sections later.
This book uses concise and interesting text that explores the cultural nuances and large scale events of major historical societies in a fascinating light.
This was my textbook for World Civilization at BYU, and I absolutely loved it - I wished my professor for the first half of the course had followed it more! I still have it and occasionally use it for reference.
