About the author

K.P. Purnachandra Tejaswi was a prominent Kannada writer, novelist, photographer, ornithologist, publisher, painter and environmentalist. He made a great impression in the "Navya" period of Kannada literature and and inaugurated the bandaya sahitya.

Tejaswi was born on September 8, 1938. His father is the famous poet, Rashtrakavi Kuvempu. He completed his education in Mysore. Tejaswi has written in almost all forms of literature including poems, short stories, novels, travel literature, plays and science fiction. He has translated several English books to Kannada. His famous translations include the series on Kenneth Anderson's hunting expeditions and Henri Charrière's Papillon.

He has won several awards for his contribution to literature such as the Rajyotsava and Kannada Sahitya Academy awards.

Poornachandra Tejaswi died of cardiac arrest at the age of 69

One of the most terrifying books I have ever read. I couldn't sleep properly for days after reading this. The story it self is very gripping and in the hands of Tejaswi the book comes out as superb. The fact that everything written in the book is a real life event makes it even more terrifying.

ಕೆಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನ ಮೊಟ್ಟಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಓದಿದ ಅನುಭವ ಅಭೂತಪೂರ್ವವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ರುದ್ರ ಪ್ರಯಾಗದ ನರಭಕ್ಷಕ ಅಂತಹ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಒಂದು. ನಾನು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಆರನೇ ತರಗತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊಟ್ಟ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ. ಮಲೆನಾಡಿನ ಮಾಗಿ ಚಳಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಓದುವಾಗ ಬೆವರಿದ್ದೆ. ಆಮೇಲೆ ಸಹ ಸುಮಾರು ಐದಾರು ಬಾರಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಓದಿರಬಹುದು. ಪ್ರತಿ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲೂ ಮುಂದೇನಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಕುತೂಹಲ, ಚಿರತೆಯ ಕುಟಿಲ ಜಟಿಲ ತಂತ್ರಗಳು, ಜಿಮ್ ಕಾರ್ಬಿಟ್ರಾ ಅನುಭವದ ಚಿತ್ರಣ, ಅದನ್ನು ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಹತ್ತಿರಗೊಳಿಸುವ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿಯವರ ಅನುವಾದ ಓದುಗರನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಈ ಸಲ ರುದ್ರಪ್ರಯಾಗದಲ್ಲೇ, ಅಲಕಾ ನದಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಮರು ಓದು ನನಗೆ ಲಭಿಸಿತು. ಸುಮಾರು 120ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಂದು ಜಗತ್ತಿನಾದ್ಯಂತ ಕುಖ್ಯಾತವಾದ ನರಭಕ್ಷಕ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ವಿಲ್ಲನ್. ಆದರೆ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಜಿಮ್ ಕಾರ್ಬೆಟ್ ರ ಈ ಎರಡು ಸಾಲುಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿ ಸಲ ಓದಿದಾಗಲೂ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಅಂದಿನ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ ಇಂದಿನ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ ಎಷ್ಟು ಅಜಗಜಾಂತರ, ಅಲ್ಲವೇ? ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದು ಶತಮಾನದ ಹಿಂದೆಯಷ್ಟೇ ಕಾಡು ಎಷ್ಟು ದಟ್ಟೈಸಿತ್ತು, ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬಹುವಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಅನ್ನೋ ಚಿಂತನೆ ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಾಡುತ್ತೆ. ಕೇವಲ ಒಂದೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಸಂಪತ್ತಿನ ಮಾರಣಹೋಮ ಈ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಿರುವುದು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಆಘಾತಕರ! Decline of biodiversity, nature, culture ಒಂದೆಡೆಯಾದರೆ rise of population, pollution, adulteration ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ! ನಮ್ಮದೇ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥದಿಂದ ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂಬರುವ ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಎಷ್ಟು ಭೀಕರವಾಗಿರುವವೊ?!

Can't at all believe its a true story. It's hard to decide where to place it. Either Adventure or Thriller or Horror. In the end, for me its horror. Well paced. The writer makes you feel every single moment, every ounce of air you breath, every second you spend, with horror. The book is really scary in the first place. And you don't come across a book of this kind daily. Goosebumps and fright will be the related words. Actually I was really frightened to sleep alone at night after starting to read this. All together it stands apart from the crowd.

if you are a person who always read love and relations story then this is not for you. this was a pure hunting story of a demon cheetah. the story is real. it was sooo interesting that once u start reading u find it difficult to close the book. it was so thrilling on every page. a complete adventures pack. even for today this can be made a movie. the main story is one man eating cheetah killed by a British officer. ha haa but believe me in the course of reading it triggers your imagination level one step higher. and also it provides lot of information about animal lifestyle and forests. and people at that time.

WHAT A BOOOOKKK!!!!!!!
This book is the most thriller book I ever read, even though Tejaswi sir didn't wrote the book the translation is so smooth that there is no interruption. This book is perfect in all aspects. The storyline, narration, use of language and giving even the minute details everything is perfect. I'm in love with this book. The narration is so good that it feels we are the one who is hunting that man eater, there are some scenes which while reading we feel immersed in that situation, we feel that chill in spine, Fear creeps up in our body thinking that man eater will pounce on us.
Overall this is a MUST read book.

This book is about the constant battle between the hunter , Jim carbet who comes to Rudraprayag to kill the cheetah that had eaten many humans around and created terror in the whole nation with its smartness that is unusual in other cheetahs. The involvement of people in the villages around in killing cheetah, the hunting skills of jim carbet and the effort it takes to get to know the cheetah's unbelievable attacks is put very well.More importantly in the end the death of cheetah brings equal sadness as much as it was a great relief to the villagers.
